A great read before the weekend
This is so worth reading - Newsweek magazine is still holding tight to the belief that there will be Oscars, despite the current writers’ strike. As a result, they gathered some of the actors they feel are likely contenders for Oscar nominations, got them in one room, and did a round-table discussion.
In attendance were Angelina Jolie, Daniel Day-Lewis, George Clooney, James McAvoy, Marion Cotillard, and Ellen Page.
Read the edited transcript over here.
An excerpt - they asked Angelina Jolie about the experience of playing Mariane Pearl:
I looked face to face at the person I had been playing. And I continue to see her. Our kids still play together. So it was very odd. But she’s just the most wonderful woman, and there was some kind of kinship that I felt with her. I really truly love her, and I can say that because I do know her. That actually made me terribly nervous. It was the first film where I didn’t sleep the night before we started shooting. That night, she and her son came by to say hello to everybody, to say good luck before they left. Adam talked about his dad, and I realized that when this little boy grows up, this whole film–whatever the critics say, whatever anybody says-is going to be his re-enactment of how much his parents loved each other and how upset his mother was when this happened. So as an actor it certainly filled me with as many tools and emotions as I needed, because it was so real. But as her friend I was very, very scared. I was very relieved when she felt we had done it right.
The article is just fantastic, they talked about some great stuff, George Clooney was his typical funny self, it turns out that James McAvoy is hilarious as well, and Angelina Jolie finished off with a great final line.
Enjoy!

Angelina has such great powers of empathy!
About James McAvoy, he is from Glasgow in Scotland, a city I lived in for 11 years and that I love. He is from a quite a poor area, I think - Drumchapel - but its an area with a good community spirit. He seems a really down to earth guy and he has married a really sweet young woman who he met on his first big tv series in the UK. Thought people might like some background on him, as he may end up friends with Angelina and Brad and family, especially as James and Anne Marie may have kids soon. BTW, am I first? If so, yipee!

I watched both the round table discussion and read the transcript and just for your information Angelina’s last lines on the transcript is not the actual last line.
The line about the George’s house was somewhere in the middle of the discussion.
It was an awesome discussion nevertheless.
The video is also worth watching cause there are a few things left out of the transcript. I know for certain Angelina talks more then what is in the transcript. Worth the watch. Click now.
I love James McAvoy answer to paparazzi.

Is it going to come out in the actual print issue? I wasn’t too sure.
Angie and George seem to have gotten into some sort of banter as well. Very cute.
But it was such a lovely read overall. Thanks Sherry.

Thanks Sherry. It’s definately an interesting read. I do hope this idea of Mr Clooney’s works, it will be a pity to miss the Oscars.

Cheryl, if you click on Sherry’s link, it’ll take you to the videos as well as the edited transcript. And I don’t know if this roundtable will be published in Newsweek since they note that it’s “Newsweek Web Exclusive.”

I absolutely enjoyed this roundtable. I’m totally fascinated with movie magic - what we see on screen, and the behind the scenes nuts & bolts. It’s so interesting how different actors have different techniques - e.g. Bening & Winslet starting with their costumes’ importance and James McAvoy starting from the character’s inner emotional life and downplaying the outer appearance of costumes.
These are the kinds of articles I love to read - something with substance, meaning, and accuracy - not the tabloid trash.
(quick check-in from Park City, UT - Sundance Film Festival, majestic beauty of Rocky Mountains piled up with snow, high 24 degrees; “Sugar’s” world premiere is Monday with dinner/party hosted by HBO.)

You’re welcome, Irma. Ligaya, I agree - the whole thing was so fascinating in so many ways…
I hadn’t really fully registered how it must have been for Ange - meeting someone who’s husband died so horrifically. I think it was a great compliment to her that Daniel Day-Lewis asked her about her feelings leaving the film.
I thought you could tell that James McAvoy was joining in really well, but that he’s younger and less experienced in life than the others (I would hate for him to read that, but I’m sure he won’t anyway).
I love the way she said they’d all go to George’s - what a lovely thought.

Thanks, Sherry. That was nice and fun read. And so it seems that those who think Angie hates George are wrong.

Ligaya, so happy to hear from you and know you are having a great time. Is Sugar your son’s film? If so, I wish him good luck. Have a good time and let us know about it when you get back home.

I haven’t had the chance to watch the roundtable, but I have read the transcript. It was interesting, and clearly, Daniel Day-Lewis seemed to be the most revered one; everyone at that table seemed to really look up to him. Really says a lot about him as an actor. I also liked it that he had questions for everyone; he seemed very much interested in engaging them in a very insightful conversation. James McAvoy sounded charming & funny. Of course, Angie’s comments were enlightening. :)
