Angelina Jolie addresses the IVF question

by Sherry on August 4th, 2008

As many of you will remember, there was a lot of talk that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie did In Vitro Fertilization to conceive twins, and even rumors that they had purposely chosen to have one boy and one girl. IVF is a wonderful advance to help parents who are struggling with infertility, but it is not usually taken lightly. Also, while IVF has helped many families, and is thus a positive thing, the problem was that the tabloids and blogs were twisting it into something negative, saying they were controlling how many babies they had and whether they were boys or girls. That was why I refused to post about it at the time.

However, in the interview, Hello asked them directly and Angelina cleared the air.

There were reports that the twins were conceived through IVF. Would you like to comment on that?
Angelina: If they had been conceived through IVF we would have been happy to discuss it. But we have been fortunate never to have had fertility problems.

I know not everyone is going to believe that, which is fine. But I have to figure, Angelina is so outspoken and so blunt about everything else in her life. If she had indeed had fertility problems and they had gone the IVF route with a successful outcome (after all, there’s no guarantee!), then I feel pretty sure that she would have talked about it with pride and honesty.

So, I guess the tabloids will have to put their thinking hats on and come up with some new garbage instead!

I agree with you Sherry. I don’t think Angie would hide it if she did went through the IVF, as she’s always been outspoken about things, and this is something that has helped so many couples, I don’t think she’d shy away from advocating it if it did help them. And while as in any scientific procedure, IVF might be abused by some people, it is generally a good thing and it’s too bad the media people make it sound like something horrible by attaching it to Angie.

That said, thank you for all the posts you’ve had (haven’t been able to comment as much, but I still visit and read the comments). You and Randi over at Bradpittwatch are my two daily JP required reading. :) And to those who posted links to the photos of the beautiful family, thanks a million too.

I guess for some the Jolie-Pitts story is too good to be true so they had to make up something that was never negative to begin with…. Apparently just not true. The spread in people is so much fun. Did anyone notice how they didn’t pose for an acutal family photos with all 8 faces? I thought that was cute & leaves a little mystery to this especially fun family.

there’s nothing wrong on having an IVF. that IVF rumor was just an attack by a magazine who didn’t get the copyright of the twins first photo and i agree, now that they have cleared that rumor, the tabs will make up another negative rumor.

I agree with you too Sherry. Angelina has been willing to express herself about everything and been willing to do unconventional things in public (like kissing her brother, talking about her past drug experiences, etc.). I think that it is the overall character of a person that helps one decide whether they are speaking the truth in these instances and I think Angie’s answer to the IVF said what had to be said.

On a related personal note, I am also fearless about showing and expressing who I am and have on a occasion done some pretty unconventional things. For a while I was single, though of the “marrying” age. I went to my dad’s with my best girl friend, who I am very close to and have a very strong bond of trust with, and I called her “sweetie” once. My dad assumed I was a lesbian but did not say it to my face. My feeling was: If were, I would not be in the least ashamed of it. Just like everything else, I’d tell everyone ! I was shocked that anyone would think that someone as forthright as I was would try to hide something like that if it were true. Likewise, for Angelina to hide the fact that they used IVF would just purely and simply be out of character.

In People, Pitt seems to suggest that the twins came via his side of the family, although that is impossible as it’s the mother who carries the gene for multiples. Hope he isn’t that dumb! Jolie was really, really thin and my guess is she took fertility pills. Knox resembles Shiloh, but Viv has an odd nose–huge actually. Maybe it was the way they took the pics.

ITA, Sherry, including that IVF isn’t a decision people make easily or take lightly (I have a few family members and friends who took that route), and that Angelina and Brand would be frank if they had used that method. (Showbiz Tonight mentioned that not only did Brad’s sister have twins, there’s a history of twins on his grandparents’ side). Ugh Weakly cleverly found a way to boost their circulation, and temporarily upstage People and Hello by concocting that IVF scenario. I have a few more opinions, but I’m tired and going to bed – so I’ll post them tomorrow (+ my off-topic review of Jon and Kate and Eight, saw the program for the first time today).

SUCCESS PART I !!! Had to go to 3 stores, then got several copies of People. Tomorrow, I’m going to my Barnes & Noble to see if I can reserve some copies of Hello. I think they only carry 3-5 copies.

I absolutley Love , Love all of the gorgeous pictures I have seen on the the net.. I have to say my faves are of the kids holding thier siblings, especailly the pic of Pax and Knox.. It’s a classic… Ok so I have been to 3 Walgreens and 2 Longs, Barnes and Noble and Borders… Help, I am going crazy to get my hands on one or the other…. Who were the photographers? I am impressed!

On the subject of IVF, I had twin fraternal sons at the age of 21.. Alot of women may drop one or several eggs per cycle.. Why would a healthy couple with one biological daughter already, even think of having IVF? It doesn’t make any sense.. My Niece went with IVF after trying for 10 years to conceive.. with IVF she did indeed conceive and had a healthy baby girl.. then a year later got pregnant without IVF and had a beautiful boy…. Brad and Ang don’t have the time to go though all the months of treatments for that…. I believe Angelina, everyone should! JMO

No problem. :-) One to look through (which I wouldn’t mind getting fingerprints, spills, etc.on), one to keep pristine for my Angelina magazine collection (who knows, maybe I can sell it on eBay someday ;-) ), one to clip for my Jolie-Pitt scrapbook/collage, and one for my mom.

I have a copy of People now. First I went to WalMart and they don’t have the new copies yet, then Longs, same story. Finally, I went to Ralph’s and got me one. I believe Angie about the IVF. She will always be the target of tabloids and we know it. BTW, on another topic. I will not have access to a computer for a while. Aug. 13 through Aug. 28 I will be on vacation: 1 week in Sydney, and one week in the Gold Coast. Then Aug. 28th, I will fly to Manila for my college reunion from Miriam on Sept. 6th. Then back to my computer on Sept. 9th or 10th if I am not jetlagged.

    Hi Sherry,

I definitely didn’t believe the IV rumors. For starters you can’t determine the sex of the fetus/zygote so early on and people don’t realise that it is a very invasive procedure and takes a while depending on the sucess. I know because I’ve looked into it.

Angelina would have had to take injections every day to stimulate her ovaries. This is quite dangerous as someone go into hyperovulation syndrome which people have died from.

You then have to harvest the eggs and then fertilize them and then do the embryo transfer. The success rate is about 43%. If it doesn’t work the you have to do the whole process again. It also takes months for it to work and then you’ve no guarantee that the embryos will be healthy.

The tabloids make it out that they can just buy these babies off the shelf!!!! Absolutely ridiculous!

Sherry, thanks so much for keeping us so informed. Angela, was sorry to read about your accident. Were driving or a passenger? Hope you recover quickly. Lucy, have a safe trip and enjoy.
BradPittWantsMe, this is the casual Brad, when not working he does his own thing, which is the crazy hats and his goatee. I like that they all appeared casual, there was no running around and getting everyone dressed to kill. Well maybe Zee, she looked like she had a pretty blouse on, but that is Zee. Kids being silly as kids are, to me just a very very happy family. I am a big fan of Marc Anthony and Jennifer and I was very disappointed in the layout of their twins. Too staged and not at all like the Marc I have always read about. Oh well we all have different ways of seeing things, but I guess we all agree that this is beautiful and happy family.

Anyone who believes that a fertile couple with no known secondary fertility issues will just go in for a quick round of IVF is certifiable. It’s a long, painful process and I don’t know anyone who would do it if they didn’t absolutely have to.

As for conceiving twins, the inheritance factors come 100% from the maternal side. Twins on the father’s side of the family have no effect on whether twins are conceived or not. Identical twins is a completely random occurance, while fraternal twins are determined by the mother releasing two eggs during ovulation instead of just one. Just for interest’s sake. :-)

julia, i don’t think such an interview ever transpired. otherwise, it would have been all over the blogs and news, and i believe us weekly would have added a quote from just such an interview to support their recent headline about the jolie-pitts … i think. i’ve never really read that us issue about the so-called in vitro, but i imagine, the article was no different from us weekly’s other “oh so credible” stories about the jolie-pitts.

i’m sooo glad angie addressed the IVF issue but i think non of the loyal brangelina fans believed it! IVF is for women who has a problem conceiving and also w/ fertility issues. i know ‘coz my sis-in law[also my best friend for 40yrs] went thru this twice but unsuccessful so they just adopted. i could explained abt. this more but non sense. me and my sis were just laughing abt.it the other day and of course who broke the news right? US mag!, whom i’ve posted here before to never never buy! WOW! janice Mean’s credibility is really going down the……. never mind. i wanna say some more but i dont want my post to be on moderation! LOL! anywho, yesterday i spent half of my day looking for people and hello mags.but unsuccessful! i live in panorama city w/c is 12 miles north of hollywood! i paid my nephew to drive me around but none! went to walmart target ralphs albertson rite aid sav on and barnes and noble. got soo tired ‘cuz of my minor surgery 4days ago! people’s subscription here doesnt come ’til friday so i spent the rest of my day in the net browsing all over for the pics and was just awe and cried a little bit b/c my brangelina looks sooo happy w/ their brood! she looks healthy- thanks to all who prayed for her! this family is really blessed and i love them more! more power to all the JP fans here and especial thanks to you sherry! also HAPPY B-DAY TO MADDOX CHIVON JOLIE PITT! he’s 7 today!

In late 2006 Angie did an interview with Diane Sawyer for TGS. Sawyer asked Angie if she was pregnant - there were rumors she had gotten pregnant a few months after giving birth to Shiloh. Angie said she was not pregnant and that she was on the pill. Then she said they would adopt next.

And adopt next they did in the spring 2007. So she was probably still on the birth control pill when they adopted Pax in 2007. Then she went into filming Wanted. I doubt a woman whould want to get pregnant while filming an action movie. Then she went into filming the Changeling. So I think she stayed on the pill until close to the end of filming Changeling.

She probably stopped taking the birth control pill in October or November and got pregnant around that time. So common sense shows she and Brad have no problems with fertility.

I think some of the older actresses who have given birth for the first time at age 35+ probably used IVF, but not Angie. She is open and candid about her life. She told Diane Sawyer she was on birth control pills - how many other actresses would have courage to reveal a personal thing like that. That’s why Angie’s interviews are so refreshing. They are unique in their frankness. And she has such a good heart. She is courageous and yet vunerable. All of that comes out in her interviews. And reporters know that - so they ask her questions that they know others might shy away from. They know she gives good interviews because she is so open and vunerable.

^^^good point other brangie fan. she was so open about taking the pill (which was probably looked down on by some of her naysayers) that there would have been no reason for her to hide or lie about an in vitro if they had chosen that route.

First, thanks for this great site.

As for IVF, there is nothing at all wrong with it, but as most of you have said, why would they need it? I think the tabloids just need to write something that is controversial and seems to bring them down a peg, though again, nothing wrong with IVF.

If US magazine had just said they had IVF and left it there, it would not have bothered me. But they made it seem selfish and ego driven…Brad wants a son and coerced Angelina to have the procedure. (Any MD who would do it for that purpose is not ethical and should lose their license.) Angelina did not want the “stress” of sex with Brad, but did not mind surgery?!?!? That should have been the first clue to how dumb the story was. Again, it is not like having a tooth pulled. It is hard, painful and not guranteed.

But US knew there would be a great and true story when the pictures were printed and they wanted to spoil the “happy” party, so they got what they wanted. Hits on their site, mentions on blogs, sales, and doubts in many peoples minds. They have to have known People would ask the question and knew their story would be proven false, but they had already planted the seed of doubt and that is all they wanted. (Look for trashing in the next few weeks from tabloids though. They are jealous of People and will do what ever it takes to make them, Brad, Angelina, and their family look bad.)

But life is sublime for Brad, Angelina and their family, and that is the most important thing. Hope Maddox has a great birthday, but I have a feeling all of his days are pretty good.

The magazines “non-credible” ones that do not believe in ethical issues and decencies in their articles, will make something out of nothing. I don’t care if JPs have sextuplets? They are the most loving and thoughtful family I have ever seen. Their commitments to one another as partners, their children and UNHCR are outstanding. Others in Hollywood and the unreliable magazines need to wake up and do something decent for a change.

I don’t see why they would do it anyway as seen as they would’ve been just as happy with one baby. I never believed it and even if they did i know Ange would speak about it. There’s no reason for her to be ashamed she’s a wonderful, inspirational woman. It’s just a blessing i think :)

To everyone who says that twins have to be hereditary: that’s not true. Sometimes women have twins even when no one in their family has previously had twins. Having twins on the mother’s side increases the chances, but isn’t the only determining factor.
