Angelina Jolie and Marcheline Bertrand – video

September 12, 2009 by Sherry

In a previous post, PittWatch reader Kati posted a link to this absolutely beautiful, stunning video tribute to the relationship between Angelina Jolie and Marcheline Bertrand.

I’m a fairly emotional person and this video brought tears to my eyes, it was so touching. Check it out:

It’s unbelievable to see how much Angelina and her mother look alike. Right at the beginning there’s a picture of Jon Voight and Marcheline holding Angelina as a baby and for a split second I thought it was Angelina holding a baby because they looked so similar. It’s very striking.

Enjoy the video!

(Isn’t Maddox unbelievably tiny in that picture of Angelina and Marcheline up top? He was only about four months old!)

Marcheline Bertrand sure was a womderful person and a great mother!
    Thanks Sherry!!!

P.S.I soooo agree with you Sherry,Angie and Marcheline look soooooo much alike!

  2. angela says:

Angie looked a lot like her father when she was little but totally became a spitting image of her mom now that she’s all grown up. i could see John V. in Shiloh now and have the feeling that she’ll look exactly like her mom as she grows up too.

thanks for the touching vid Sherry, Angie sure did love her mother so much. it’s really sad that Marcheline wasn’t able to see all of her grandkids but i’m sure she’s watching over them wherever she may be right now.

Sherry – thank you very, very much for posting this video I sent the link to. I´ve watched it myself many times after I found this and every time it makes me cry! Like you said it´s amazing how tiny Mad looks in that pic with Angie and Marcheline. But he was after all just a baby by the time this pic was taken. Now he´s a big boy – already 8 years old. I´m sure that he misses his grand-mere (like Angie and Mad called her) a lot. But luckily he and his siblings still have their other grandmother – Grammy Jane – whom they all sure love very much. Marcheline was without a doubt a very good and loving mother and Angie sure is following in her mum´s footsteps by trying to be as good and loving mum as her own dear mum was. And so far she has done a marvellous job. She loves ALL her and Brad´s kids equally (no matter what the damn rags say) and wants them to grow up to be good and decent people just like she and her brother James are. Both are kind and generous people who love to help those people who don´t often have much. Angie and Brad both sure want their children to continue their charity work when they´re older. Wherever Marcheline is right now she certainly is watching over the whole Jolie-Pitt family and protecting them. God bless the JPs 4ever!

  4. dhc says:

Just FYI. Maddox was 7 months old when Angelina adopted him.

  5. laila says:

Thank you again Sherry, it certainly bought tears to my eyes.Marcheline would be so, so proud of Angelina. She is such a wonderful lady and mother to her children. Not forgetting the happiness she has brought to Brad and all her hard work to help the less fortunate in life. That’s what I love about her and Brad their genorosity to others, and how they are teaching their children to care for the less fortunate in life, what beautiful qualities they have. God Bless the Jolie-Pitt family and God Bless you to Sherry, as without you I wouldn’t get to see half as much of them.

Just watched the video again, and the only thing I can say is: Angelina and her Mother Marchelina have two kinds of beauty: Inner and Outer. Now I know how Angelina has become the woman she is. Her Mom taught her and her brother good loving values. And then you put Brad Pitt into the equation and now you have a powerful couple that not only look good together, but truly care about others. And they in turn will give their children strong loving values.

  7. irma says:

Mary Ann, I totaly agree with you. Angie’s mom is her inspiration & a role model. God bless the JP family.

  8. Sharis says:

    Damn, I’m crying ;(

    The song is heartbreaking…
The picture at 2:03 is so cute! Marcheline had beautiful smile, eyes, hair… Angelina takes so much after her.

The woman was only 56 years old:( It’s a tragedy she had so little time to know her grandchildren.

You folks said it all, it’s so amazing and it brings tears to my eyes. First time I saw this video. I searched and started to have interest (2 yrs ago) in this family esp. her kindness and dedication to others. I know her mother’s looking after those kids/family. Angelina probably have moments and wished her mom got to see all the children. But, each one of us have purpose and God only knows our destination. To all of you that give us fans an extra happiness…thank you for all your hardwork.

  10. Pat says:

Shiloh looks just like her mum when she was young.Love this family!

Beautiful video. I know Angie’s mom is so proud of her and when she went to sleep she knew that Angie was with a good man and would have a beautiful family! The video brought tears to my eyes also. Wish her mom was here to see the wonderful family Angie has. Two beautiful people, Angie and her mom. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you Sherry and Kati!!!!!
its amazing how much alike mother and daughter are. they both have a huge heart and they DO look very much alike.
gena: i am sure Marcheline has an eye on Angie and her family from up there;)

thanks for the heads up amcs :)

  17. Anne Taylor says:

Omgosh, that was truly beautiful! Its remarkable how much Angelina looks like her mother.

I had tears near the end but that photo of the family got the tears falling from pure joy.

    Thanks for that

    Anne

  18. Terrie says:

this is a great video, and it had some great pictures of Angelina that I hadn’t seen before. thanks!

  19. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

What a touching video! Shiloh DOES look a lot like Angie did when she was a child. Similarly, I think some of the photos of young Angie in that video show what Vivienne may look like when she’s older (since she already appears to be the spitting image of her mother!). I love how the last pictures in the video were Angie pregnant with the twins and then the entire J-P family.

It seemed very fitting to me that the movie began with Marcheline and Angie, and then ended with Angie and Marcheline’s little namesake, Vivienne Marcheline, showing how life came full circle for them. :)

  20. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

Oh, and Maddox DOES look tiny in that photo (and dhc is correct, Mad was 7 months old when Angie adopted him, so he couldn’t have been only 4 months old in that photo, Sherry. :) ). It’s also interesting to see Angie’s “Billy Bob” tattoo where the kids’ birth coordinate tattoos are now in that picture. :)

Marcheline was an amazing woman and AJ is carrying out her legacy in the way her actions (in everything that she does, as a mom and humanitarian and actor) emanate the empathy and compassion her mother showed through her example.

Shiloh, to me, looks so much like Angie did as a child, down to the hair. She has hints of Brad, definitely, but it will be interesting to see how she and the other kids will turn out. Maddox, I have a feeling, will continue Angie’s humanitarian work. I don’t know if Vivienne LOOKS like AJ. Couldn’t really tell from the People, W, mags (which I have) and other photos (from the airport in Japan). Viv and Nox, were said to resemble Brad and Angie in disposition, not in looks necessarily. I think we have to wait a bit and see some more pics to know for sure since the ones shown so far, were from when they were still very young. All I saw were chubby cheeks and lips, and brilliant eyes, and traces of their parents of course. We’ll see in time.

    Looking Up to Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is an American actress and Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency. She promoted humanitarian causes throughout the world and is noted for her word with refugee through the United Nations Commissioner for Refugees. The aim is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.
Angelina Jolie is a living example of whom Ray Vanderlaan said as people who raced for God. Although it was not clearly stated that Angelina Jolie is a religious Christian, she had set an example for Christians. Her life has reminded the Christians that we are all here to do a mission of God. Her actions had reminded us of what Rob Bell had told us about Christians being the priests of God. Angelina Jolie is not a saint. In fact she had been through so many difficult times in her childhood. She grew up in a broken family.

Angelina lived with her mother who had given up acting to raise children. Driven with depression when her classmates teased her for being so thin and for wearing glasses and braces, and then later for not being successful in her initial modelling attempt, Angelina Jolie had collected knives to hurt herself. She said that for some reason, the ritual of having cut herself and feeling pain, maybe feeling alive and feeling some kind of release was somehow therapeutic.

Although Angelina Jolie, together with her present partner, Brad Pitt has inspired everyone for their dedication to raise three biological children along with three adopted children, Angelina Jolie also did not have smooth relationships before that. She was married twice and was divorced twice. Angelina was able to cope and learned a lot about living. This is probably the reason why her ideals and advocacy on giving humanitarian support to refugees has flourished. Learning from her life and seeing her success as well as her fame, Christians were reminded of the many faith lessons taught to us in order to survive our world today.

  26. Julie says:

Hmmm, I dislike the perpsective of that article. Yes, AJ did divorce and have relationships with turbulence (who doesn’t?), but not one of her exes have ever talked badly of her. In fact, I get the impression that she’s maintained friendships and a great respect with them (especially Johnny Lee Miller and remember the congratulations ad she put out when Billy Bob welcomed his daughter after they split?).

As for the broken home, I think her mom gave her a safe and loving homebase throughout her trials in self image and depression. James and Marcheline provided her the support and love that kept her going. Her relationship with her father has been a great source of pain and resentment. The article also implies that BECAUSE she got through her tough times with divorce, that it was the reason she was able to be so good at humanitarian work and “learn about life”. From her interviews, however, she says her life changed when she saw what these refugees survived and that she could never be self destructive and think that she knew pain (Inside the Actor’s Studio show and post-Shiloh interview with Anderson Cooper) ever again or that she understood hardship in comparison. She’s also stated that though she’s been destructive and wild, that she’s never hurt or intended to inflict pain on anyone but that she needed something to ground her to life and the future before Maddox came into her life.

She also did NOT “collect knives to hurt herself”! She went to Renaissance and Gothic fairs with her mom and collected them as a child. It wasn’t until she was in her teens did she discover and begin cutting.

What I look up to in AJ is that she empathizes with with the human beings she meets and pursues her goals with the kind of openness and understanding that is rare. She listens to their stories and is unhindered by the pettiness that she’s often confronted with as a celebrity. Her mission in life is to help those who need it so badly, not for herself or any entity outside of the pain she sees firsthand. She’s a great example of human compassion, from one person to another, because she genuinely cares about the people she encounters and what she’s learned from them rather than any saintly image or Christian example as her goal. She’s following a duty to her conscience, she just cares as another human being.

The redemptive qualities of Angie’s story has always been obvious to me but in these times of incivility redemption has become the poor cousin of the accusing finger.

  28. zce says:

I am very happy to see Ange give tribute to her mom,it is very touching and to really acknowledge her is that she and Brad should get married on her mom’s birthday, that will be a great celebration for her love of her mom. I have to say I truly am happy for them despite how anyone feel they keep living their life. You get to have only one mom and that is the greatest treasure that you can ever have. There is only one great love that come in our life and it may not make everyone happy but as long as you are happy nothing else matters, GOD BLESS THE BOTH OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, Oh! let’s make some movies.

  29. zce says:

This ia absolutely amazing how to people can look Identical Ange and her mom, I had to look at the video again because I actually thought it was Ange. It is a beautiful thing to put your children ahead of you and teach them value as well as principal’s. When I see the video’s of her and her mom it brings tears to my eyes, it was just yesterday that my mom said her ship came in to pick up, so, I can identify with her pain it never leaves even though time goes by, you will always remember it was just yesterday.

  30. Helen says:

Kati, kudos to you!!!!!!. What a beautiful tribute to the most beautiful woman in the world. The resemblance between Angie and her mum are amazing. Seeing them together like that, it reminded me of my own mum. You did an excellent job on that piece. Hope you will have more in the not too distant future.

  31. Oh so cute pic. of Angelina I think she is a great mother too :) she is so beautiful brad pitt and Angelina look good together :)

  32. Faye88 says:

Thanks Sherry & Kati. Very beautiful video. The song fits perfectly with the photos.
Thanks amcs for the latest photos & video of Angie’s recent trip to Kenya. Wonderful video of her trip. It gives the public a good look at the horrible living conditions these refugees have to endure. It truly breaks you heart when you see the children in these places.

  33. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

Julie- Actually, in the PEOPLE interview, Brad said that Viv resembled Angie “in physicality” as well as in personality. :) Similarly, Angie said in one of her interviews while promoting Changeling that (this was right after she mentioned what their personalities were like): “It’s funny, Knox looks more like Brad and Viv more like me,” (I’m paraphrasing a bit, as I don’t remember the exact beginning of the quote, just the last part about which twin looked like which parent at the time).

Oh, and check out this comparassion I made of baby Angie and Viv in the airport photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30691897@N04/3249145925/in/photostream/

  34. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

zce- But both Brad and Angie have basically said that they don’t plan to get married anytime soon! Why should they have to get married if they don’t want to?

  35. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

zce- I’m sorry I was so harsh. I realize that I probably mis-understood your comment, and I apologize.

That said, Angie’s trip to Kenya has got me thinking…do you guys think the J-Ps will adopt from Kenya next? Kenya IS, after all, in Africa, and from how they’ve talked about wanting to balance the races, it appears that their next adoption will most likely be from a country in Africa. :) Of course, I have no idea if Kenya even allows International adoptions.

Helen – you can find another really touching ttribute video to Marcheline Bertrand via this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMBfoQbBYpw&feature=related. There are many other tribute videos too but I´vr posted links to those ones that I´ve found so far and find really worth watching. Hope you and the other Pittwatchers love this video too!

  38. Kati (subscribed) says:

After watching all these touching tribute videos of Marcheline Bertrand I just can´t stop wondering about the resemblance of mother and daughter. They looked so much alike. Angie sure was kind of relieved that her mum finally got peace when she died on Jan 27 2007. She saw how much she suffered during the last years of her life. But Marcheline certainly didn´t want her illness to disturb her daughter´s work. She wanted that Angie continues her work both as an actress and UNHCR goodwill ambassador. She also witnessed Angie finally finding true love with Brad and having this beautiful family with him. She, too, certainly loved Brad a lot because he brought love and happines into her daughter´s life. And because Brad is so down-to-earth and loving man. Not a typical Hollywood star. And that has a lot to do with the way he was brought up. March sure loved Mad, Zee and Shi a lot. But unfortunately she didn´t live long enough to see Pax, Knox and Vivienne. One day Vivienne will be proud of having her grandmother´s name as her middle name. She looks a lot like Angie and will most definitely be a beautiful young woman just like her big sisters.

  39. angela says:

joliepittfanatic, i will answer your question with my honest opinion so please don’t get offended. maybe it’s just me who doesn’t want Brad and Angie to adopt anytime soon. 6 kids is very handful and if you have noticed on their Japan trip, they literally both got their hands full with their kids. i know Brad and Angie has stated that they both love kids and that they aren’t done yet but hopefully baby / child number 7 can wait. each of the kids sometimes needs special time with mom and dad and i know they can do that and give that but with the twins still very young and also needs more attention than the four older kids, adding a new member who will need more special attention and care and love is not yet a good idea, IMO. yes, Z and Shi were both still baby / early toddler when they added a new member and they were able to juggle all the kids but that was back then when they have a small family, they’re big family now so it’s gonna different. i love the fact that B&A loves kids and that they love to save one child at a time around the world but i hope it’s not gonna be soon. the adoption / next baby can wait.

i truly respect your opinion about wanting the JPs to adopt so i hope you are not offended. i am not attacking you, i am just sharing my thoughts and opinion about this just like you did. and if the JPs would announce that they are adopting tomorrow or next year, i would still respect them but my opinion about the situation won’t change, atleast not yet.

  40. Kati (subscribed) says:

I really wish that one of these days Brad and Angie WILL adopt a new baby into their family but maybe now isn´t a right time. Like you said, angela, the twins are still so young that they need their mum and dad´s undivided love and attention. Also the older children need that but they´re old enough to take care of themselves in a certain extent. And joliepittfanatic – I also agree with you, too. I really wish that they´ll adopt their next child from Africa – maybe even from Kenya. I don´t know either if Kenya allows international adoptions but if it does they could adopt a Kenyan boy or girl. And who knows. Maybe some day in the future they still will have another biological child. What would be cuter than another mini-Brad or mini-Angie? God bless the JPs!

  41. Kati (subscribed) says:

After watching these beautiful tribute videos I started to notice the resemblance between Angie and Shi. The older Shi gets the more she starts to resemble her mum. But at the moment she still looks more like her dad Brad. There are many cute videos of Shi in YouTube. After watching some of them I couldn´t avoid seeing one thing:Angie and Shi´s relationship seems to be just as close as Angie´s relationship with her own mum was. They love each other a lot and I´m certain that Shi loves to spend some alone time with her mummy. No matter what the rags wrote in the past Angie loves Shi a lot. She actually loves ALL her daughters very much. But she has this really special bond with Shiloh and Vivienne. After all she carried them (and Knox) for nine months and gave birth to them. Still she also loves Zahara a lot too. Those three (and the boys) are soooo lucky to have Angelina Jolie as their mum and Brad Pitt as their dad.

  42. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

angela- You didn’t offend me at all. One of the reasons I think they will adopt again soon is, admittedly because of how quickly they’ve grown their family in the past. However, another reason is that Angie (I’m pretty sure it was Angie, anyway. It could have been Brad), has said that they’d like to raise all their kids while they’re still young. Similarly, Brad has said that it’s very important to him to be around a good long time for all his kids.

Therefore, considering that Brad is already, if I’m remembering correctly, 45 (not that he’s old, by any means, but he’s not getting any younger, either, especially when it comes to being a parent!), I’m guessing they probably don’t want to wait too long before adding to the family.

Anyway, I trust that Angie and Brad know what’s best for their family and will make the best decision for them and their family. :)

  43. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

Oh, and I also want to point out that it’s likely that, when Angie and Brad DO adopt again, it will be an older child (just as Pax was already 3 when he was adopted). Obviously the child will still need a lot of care, especially at first (s/he will obviously need help adjusting to a new culture, overcoming the language barrier, etc.), but s/he also won’t need the etensive care that a baby requires.

Therefore, Angie and Brad would probably still be able to devote quite a bit of time to the twins and the other kids.

  44. Kati (subscribed) says:

joliepittfanatic – I also have a feeling that the next child Brad and Angie will adopt will be a little bit older child (maybe 3 or 4 years old like Pax was). She or he will be very much loved and will certainly get all the help and love she or he needs. Pax knew practically no English when he was adopted over 2 and a half years ago and had to adjust to a completely different culture. But now he sure speaks English fluently and is still learning. And he sure has adapted into a new culture well too. Maybe he learnt some Western manners already in that Vietnamese orphanage. He sure is very polite little boy and says “Thank you.” every time he gets something. And he sure loves to help his parents to take care of the twins just like his older brother and little sisters do. To Brad and Angie the color of their next child´s skin sure doesn´t matter. The main thing is that she or he is healthy. Still I hope that the next child they adopt will come from Africa. God bless the JPs 4ever!

  45. Ann says:

Does anyone know the title of the song and the artist?

  46. Mary Ann (subscribed) says:

Kati, I watched two video’s this week of Angie and her Mom and I think the song on this one is Mama by Celine Dion. I loved it when I heard it also.
