Angelina Jolie asked to join the Council on Foreign Relations

by Sherry on June 8th, 2007

Angelina JolieThanks to all the hard work and activism that Angelina Jolie does in third world countries through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, she has been asked to join the Council On Foreign Relations, according to People.

The Council for Foreign Relations is essentially a large think tank which has given memberships to people such as Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Diane Sawyer, Condoleezza Rice, and Tom Brokaw.

Angelina was nominated earlier this year. The Vice President of the Council had this to say:

“Angelina Jolie is accomplished in her field and has demonstrated serious interest in issues such as Darfur, international education and refugees. As such, her profile fits very well with other young professionals we’ve selected as the next generation of foreign policy leaders.”

People also quoted part of Angelina Jolie’s interview in Esquire where she stated that when she dies she wants to be remembered as a humanitarian, not an actress:

“I recently had a column published in a newspaper and at the end it didn’t say I was an actress. It said that I was a UN Goodwill Ambassador – that’s all. And I was really proud.”

Angelina’s role in the Council On Foreign Relations is the perfect follow up to the path she struck in 2001 when she joined the UN after filming part of Tomb Raider in Cambodia.

As much as I love seeing her in movies, it is so wonderful to see her continuing to fulfill her own dreams of reaching out and helping third world and developing countries through her activism.

Jolie must continue to be an actress as well. we love to watch her movies. She is a great actress.
Of course, being an actress actually helps her to be a humantrian as well. A normal person seldom makes as much money as what Jolie does. Jolie would give more money to help the poor when she has more money.

she is definitely fulfilling her calling… acting is her way of generating monies, and donating a third of that… very remarkable and honorable..

Angelina has accomplished that which many can even dream of. She WILL be remembered for her calling as an international voice for those who have no voice. Such an accomplishment should not be dimiinshed by her stardom. Many “stars” only contribute sound bites. Angelina puts it all out there for her cause. She is not a diva, she travels with minimal supplies when she is on a visit for her cause ( I have heard only one backpack) and she is definitely in this for the long haul. I so admire her, especially when I see so many living for clubbing.
She may have had a few rough starts in her life, but she is now a true activist for the unempowered. God Bless Her and her beautiful family.

I don’t admit to anyone that I visit this site everyday. I have an addiction to it. But I really want to follow up the activities of Angelina and Brad. They are such good role models to other celebrities. I agree with the others — they should continue to act and choose good movies and use their influence and money to help others. They should also devote time to their family. That way they will also be remembered as being good parents and responsible global citizens.

You know, I visit here everyday, and as a Jolie-Pitt fan… I sure hope both A & B have found this website and get to read the wonderful thoughts and prayers their true fans send them everyday. Whether it’s time spent with their family, acting, or humanitarian work, my high-five and admiration for both is due to their honesty, loyalty and dedication to ALL they do. They are truly unique and special as individuals, and together make one heck of a team!

I totally agree with you all. Angie is a role model for us even with a wild childhood, she grew up to be a generous and beautiful humanitarian. Hope she will still be in movies for a while because she is such a terrifc actress. I’m sure Brad is so proud of his partner.

Mr & Mrs Smith posted this on JJ site. I appreciated so much that I want to share it with you all.

This video fits very well right in here. It’s been posted before but needs to be posted again. This was an interview done in Cannes that shows exactly why Angie was elected into the CFR. You could tell that the guy doing the interview was impressed by her knowledge.

Yeah, we need more Angelina. I saw on the news that some high school students are campaigning for help for Darfur.

Angie has managed to make movies and continue her humanitarian works at the same time. So she should keep her acting career, for good reasons too.

    It’s High COMMISSIONER, not Council.

Elena - Of course! You’re right, I wrote it incorrectly. I guess I just typed “council” so many times that I did it on auto-pilot! :)

I fixed it, thanks for pointing that out.

I know I am probably the last one to have watched Brad’s interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC Primetime, must be at least 2 years old. It not only brought tears to my eyes when I see the scenes in Ethiopia…it also give me a glimpse of how much Brad admired Angie for her humanitarian works. When Diane brought up the question that Angie is being viewed as a home wreaker, for a moment, you can see a flash of anger over Brad’s face. Even though at that time they were just beginning to explore their relationship, you can sense how he hates the way gossipmongers are calling Angie names.

Hi Everyone, I just got my new issue of Marie Claire in the mail yesterday. Angie’s interview is so beautiful and I’m not just saying that because I love her! From the way she talked about the kids, her relationship with Brad and the way he was there for her when her mother died, it made me cry and smile at the same time, very touching. Did anyone else read it yet?

THANKS, MADD — UPDATE: ANGELINA’S APPEARING ON BOTH THE LARRY KING sHOW, AND DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART, THURSDAY, JUNE 12.

    The Marie Claire is great.

Today’s Parade article is fantastic, too. Whoever’s arranging the interviews is doing a great job of showing Angelina’s different facets.

Reader’s Digest: Conversation with Angelina & Mariane
    Esquire: her humanitarian/philanthropic/political work, celebrity
Marie Claire: family, Brad & home, Marcheline dying
Parade: A Life That Matters - How I Found My Way

    EXCERPTS FROM PARADE:
(entire article on PARADE.com on June 12):

Bertrand managed time for others. “From a very young age, I saw her doing aid work,” jolie recalls. “She took me to an Amnesty Internaational dinner when I was aoout 9. She was very involved in Native Amerian issues.”

“I think that when I was in my early 20s, I knew, innately, that I wasn’t living an important life…I hadn’t found my way. i wasn’t giving very much…I like film. But at the end of the day, you wonder about your worth as a person.

“…the first place I went ended up being the worst place I’ve ever been Maybe it was meant to be, because it changed me. I remembe being at the airport, on te phone with my mom, just in hysterics. I was shaken by Sierra Leone. I met little kids with their arms and legs cut off. That kind of brutality just shocked me.”

To her credit, she stoutly resists any temptations to get on a soapbox or a high horse.

Angelina Jolie’s beauty and character puts in my mind a woman like Arundhati Roy, the beautiful Indian Actress/Activist for the India’s poor, not a CFR council member. I think, she should not deign to join such a nefarious organization as the CFR (David Rockefeller, CIA, Right-Wing Military Generals, and transnational corporate predators - the very people whose ruthless policies drive the wars and create the poverty Angie seeks to alleviate). Angelina, you are doing what is most important to do in this time and age. Truly helping others! You don’t have to join anything to do what you are already accomplishing…keep that in mind.
