Angelina Jolie - EW’s 25 Top Stars of 2007

by Sherry on November 26th, 2007

Entertainment Weekly has released their 25 Top Stars of 2007 and Angelina Jolie is among them. In fact, EW refers to her as 2007’s Valedictorian.

Angelina Jolie - Valedictorian of 2007 - Entertainment Weekly Top 25 Stars of 2007

Here’s what the publication had to say about her:

Angelina Jolie is currently fulfilling fanboy fantasies in Beowulf with her role as Grendel’s mom. Grendel’s naked mom. In digital 3-D, no less. But energizing her base is hardly the 32-year-old actress’ only accomplishment this year. In A Mighty Heart, Jolie strapped on a prosthetic pregnancy belly, donned a curly wig, and delivered the sort of heart-wrenching turn that reminded audiences why she won that Academy Award (for 1999’s Girl, Interrupted ) in the first place. In other words, she acted.

”The belly just slid right on, and a wig is a lot easier than getting your hair done, but learning her French-Cuban accent was difficult,” Jolie says, describing her preparations for playing Mariane Pearl, widow of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter slain in Pakistan in 2002. During the five weeks she shot the picture with director Michael Winterbottom in India — mostly in one house, with a camera following her from room to room as she sometimes improvised dialogue — Jolie was hounded by paparazzi, and a terrorist group reportedly declared a fatwa against her during production. ”It wasn’t like a code red or anything,” she says, ”but we did have a few moments…”

Whatever happened in India — and whatever she’s wearing in Beowulf — her performances in 2007 were far more interesting than her private life. A nice change of pace.

I like what they said at the end. It’s not that they mean her life is boring, but rather that her movie roles were dramatic but in her real life she’s just mom to her kids and girlfriend to Brad Pitt, and life goes on, as normal as it can be for a celebrity family. And of course, her home life is certainly of interest to us, right?

*”— her performances in 2007 were far more interesting than her private life. A nice change of pace.”*

Totally agree. The tabloids have created this other world with their inventive writings and it’s getting boring. She has given some terrific performances recently and has looked great also.

Good for Angie. Too bad the tabs will continue with their negative spews. Still, this woman is just incredible and it’s nice to know she is above all the negative gossips and delusions by the haters.

“her performances in 2007 were far more interesting than her private life. A nice change of pace.”

I too love EW’s ending to their writeup about Angelina. Congratulations, Angelina - Valedictorian, Entertainer of the Year J.K. Rowling, and the other 23.

And congrats to EW on not sinking low and sensationalizing Angelina - for taking the high road.

People is polling readers for the 2007 Besties. We have 22 days in which to vote.

    http://www.people.com/people/package/bestof2007/0,,20160055_20160291,00.html#flashpolls

–“Who was the best dressed celebrity baby?” It had Zahara & Shiloh competing against Maddox & Pax! (I agonized and then chose Mad & Pax; I’ll keep voting for them too, because if I alternate voting between the brothers & the sisters, I’ll just dilute the vote and none of them will get high numbers.)

–“Who was most talked about?” Angelina & Brad are listed separately. (Wait a minute, is there a pattern here of splitting the vote?)

–“Which couple is most likely to make it to 2017?”

–“What was the best 10 bucks you spent at the movies?”

And 2 crimes: Angie wasn’t named in “Best Red Carpet Moment.” What about that chartreuse dress in Cannes!?! And she wasn’t included in “Who looked the best every day this year?”

We have 9 days, 6 hours, and 7 minutes to vote for the People’s Choice Awards. http://www.pcavote.com/pca/

A Mighty Heart is up for Best Independent Movie and Brad & George are up for Best Matchup.

I wish it was possible to vote for more than one at a time because frankly I have more than one choice on the who will make it to 2017 question. I voted for Brad & Angie but I can also see Demi & Ashton and Ben & Jennifer making it too.

Demi & Ashton were the weirdest couple EVER and I never expected it to last, but look at them go!

I know this a Brad and Angie fan site but I can’t help but congratulate J.K. Rowling too. She’s accomplished a huge feat and is also very charitable like Angie and Brad.

I had to vote for mad/max tooo and sorry brad but I voted for Angie.

I agree with ligaya that Angie should be in the best dress everyday and best dress red carpet. Cannes was awesome!

“her performances in 2007 were far more interesting than her private life. A nice change of pace.”

I think the comment is a sly reference to Angelina’s allegedly eccentric behaviors in the past… It’s a bit of a jab but the overall tone of the piece is overall very respectful and congratultory.

I have to say I find myself in the completely contradictory state of on one hand, cursing at the paparazzi for hounding Brad and Angie and on the other hand, complaining when I can’t see any pictures of them…. Speaking of which, I wish there were more pictures of them and the family around now…

People’s Sexiest Man Alive! issue (12/3/07) has a small article on “Angelina Jolie: Political Pundit.” It talks about Angelina writing for The Economist.

“The Economist’s executive editor, Daniel Franklin, tells [People's] Scoop, ‘Her piece was remarkably easy to edit! I thought she might have something interesting to say. It turns out, she did.’ “

    Variety, By Dave McNary:

    TOP STORY
    ‘Beowulf’ wins overseas box office

The animated re-telling of the epic poem, handled by Warner Bros. internationally, has cumed $48.5 million overseas for a combined worldwide total of $105 million. With little competition on the action front until “I Am Legend” opens in mid-December, “Beowulf” should remain a decent draw for several more weeks with openings next frame in Australia, Brazil and Japan.

“Beowulf” easily conquered the foreign box office, dominating the weekend with $26 million at 5,400 playdates in 43 markets for its second straight international victory.

“Beowulf,” which more than doubled its foreign run, scored best in its Russian launch with a first-place $4.3 million, 20% better than “Van Helsing.”

In a French frame held down by a public transport strike, “Beowulf” put the bite on $2 million in its launch. It won in Mexico with a $1.9 million opening, stayed in first in South Korea with $1.4 million.

I was also looking for her canary yellow dress in Cannes as her best red carpet ever & it is not on their list. I was surprised that they ignored how beautiful Angie in Cannes this year. I voted for Angie as much talked about, sorry Brad. I voted for them as the couple who will last till year 2017.

OK, I’m very excited because I just watched Lisa Kudrow & Zach Braff announce the Independent Spirit Awards nominees. I can’t 100% vouch for what I’m reporting because I don’t know shorthand, didn’t have a tape, and am relying only on my scribbles.

First, I learned last year (when I was following Half Nelson) that nominations are almost as good as wins, and that every kudos/awards - festival, critics, award shows from the smallest to the Golden Globes - are important. Yes, the talent in a movie counts. Also, the box office. And the Award Buzz among peers, insiders, criitcs, bloggers, and the general public. And the campaigning with “For Your Consideration” ads in the trades, screenings, schmoozings, etc.

  • ligaya
    Nov 27, 2007 at 10:38 am

Awards recognition is also good for the movie because they make people want to see it, and hopefully get the message.

The bad news: no love for Brad & AOJJ - maybe because of the over $20million budget cap? Likely.

ANGELINA JOLIE - woohoo! - for Best Female Performance. Other nominees: the female lead in “Lust, Caution,” Ellen(?) Page (Juno), Parker Posey, Sienna Miller.

BEST FEATURE (woohoo!): A Mighty Heart, Diving Bell & Butterfly, the many-Dylans movie, Juno, and Paranoid Park.

BEST FIRST SCREENPLAY (booyah!): A Mighty Heart and 4 others.

OT: I’m also cheering for JP friend Don Cheadle, Best Male Performance ISA-nominated for his star turn in based-on-true-story “Talk to Me.” He’s long overdue - he should have won the Best Actor Oscar for Hotel Rwanda - which is where he became aware of Darfur.

And Chiwetel Eijiofor, ISA-nominated for Best Supporting Male Performance (can’t remember movie’s name). People know him most for Denzel Washington’s 2nd-in-command in Inside Man & American Gangster.

And IRFAN KHAN (The Captain) is nominated in the same category as Eijiofor - not for AMH but for The Namesake, a really strong performance.

    I hope they tie.

OT: Last but no least, JP friends awarded special prize. (People Daily [people@people.chtah.com])

George Clooney and Don Cheadle will be sharing a prestigious honor for their efforts to bring peace to Africa’s war-torn Darfur region, awarded by a collection of Nobel laureates.

The 8th World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates – a group that includes former Soviet President Michael Gorbachev, former President Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu – will present the actors with the 2007 Peace Summit Award at its annual meeting in Rome next month.

Clooney and Cheadle are being honored for promoting peace in Darfur and “for their commitment to saving human lives and alleviating the suffering of civilian victims of the conflict,” the World Summit announced Monday. Gorbachev and Walter Veroni, the mayor of Rome, will present the award to the actors at the summit Dec. 13.

    [Archbishop Tutu quote]

Over the past two years Clooney and Cheadle have both traveled to the African nation to bring attention to the plight of war refugees there, spoken to government leaders about the ongoing ethnic and tribal conflict in the region and appeared in the 2007 documentary Darfur Now.

Angelina Jolie has previously been honored by her peers and awarded the prestigious Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her feisty role in the film Girl, Interrupted.

Now, the thespian and humanitarian seems likely to take home another Academy Award.

Jolie has just been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress, a good Oscar precursor.

Ange is being honored for her role in the Brad Pitt-produced A Mighty Heart. She played the wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl in the biopic.

The movie also scored a nod for Best Film.

Congrats to both Angie and Bradley!

I actually have 1 comment under moderation on this thread but I think its because I posted like seven links to great Brad and Angie pics.

And awards do make movies more noticeable. I hoping Angie and Brad win a OSCAR this year for A mighty Heart. Angie for best actress and Brad for producer aka best picture.

Kari, if you check out the different threads, you’ll see that there are negative, non-adulatory posts here in Pittwatch. Look for posts by sunshine & lori, for example.

This isn’t a neutral place. It’s a place Angelina/Brad/JP kids’ fans cherish & relish because for the most part the general caca that’s out there isn’t present here.

And my own opinion is that within the context of being fans, we’re not Stepford wives required to worship the JPs with blind adulation. I think clear-eyed fandom is best. We have a continuum of fandom here, with shades of difference and with the understanding of being able to agree to disagree.

Film Independent/ISA had 45 people on 3 nominating committees (American Feature, Foreign Feature, Documentary) which reviewed 250 films.

I was VERY surprised that Julie Christie (Away from Her) and Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) weren’t nominated. Some critics and professional award prognosticators called Cotillard a lock. Marion & Julie had stronger reviews from critics, and Angelina was judged to be #3 and even #5 behind others’ performances.

Please forgive me and bear with me for all my posts :-) - I’m bouncing off the walls I’m so excited.

Something else that counts a lot in the Oscar race is the publicity/promotional budget. Little Miss Sunshine had $10million - remember all those newspaper/tv/billboard ads in yellow? They got a lot of tushes into the theaters, raising its box office, and thereby raising its awards chances.

Half Nelson had a few thousand. If it had one-tenth of Little Miss Sunshine’s promo budget, so many more people would have watched Half Nelson, raising its box office, and making it more likely that Ryan Gosling’s co-star Shareeka Epss would have been nominated for Best Actress in the Golden Globes/Oscars.

Money shouldn’t be a problem for A Mighty Heart, I wouldn’t think. OTOH, people don’t like campaigns where it seems the producers are just buying an award.

    Fire Walk with Angelina

You’ll read a lot of reviews about Angelina’s prematurely released Oscar hopeful. But we bet this is the only write-up that connects it back to David Lynch.

Monday, October 15, 2007 at 11:15 AM, by Brent Simon

A Mighty Heart is powered, though, by Jolie’s performance, and her portrayal of Mariane is one of mesmerizingly tightened effect and distress - her very soul seems clenched. Two big emotional moments leapt out for me,..

Mariane is asked if there is anything she would say to her husband if he could now hear her. The answer in and of itself is brief and obvious (“I love you”), but the sing-song, knee-jerk reflexivity of Jolie’s line-reading is heartrending, and a reminder that sometimes the most obvious sentiment is still the most poignant..

Having danced along the razor’s edge of doubt, hope and steadfastness for its entire running time, the declaration feels emotionally devastating. But it’s also moving in a genuine way, one tinged with discernment, and the compassion of tact — qualities that, if more greatly understood and embraced, could surely fuel more thoughtful, sympathetic worldviews.
