Angelina Jolie Pleads With The West For Refugee Assistance

She expressed outrage at a photo which appeared recently in the quarterly magazine, taken on an unidentified Mediterranean beach in Spain in 2002, which showed a couple relaxing under an umbrella not far from the washed-up corpse of a black man.
“We’ll never know who he was or why he ended up there and the couple on the beach apparently couldn’t care less,” Jolie wrote. “Someone’s son, someone’s brother, or someone’s loved one. In fact, you or me, if we had been born at another time, or in another place.”
As an UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie has been to more than 20 countries as a representative in the last 5 years. Embracing other cultures seems to be a passion of the Oscar-winning actress. Her plea to the west is that we stop turning a blind eye to the plight of those who are fleeing their homeland. Closing borders is definitely a no-no for her. You really should read the entire article, “Angelina Jolie slams West for barring refugees.”

I was watching Today Show this morning here in australia when I saw a flash of news headlines at the bottom of the show which runs something like thses”Actress Angelina Jolie criticise Australia for the their treatment of Refugees”. For the past years some welfare groups here in Australia had been lobbying the government to change their immigration policies in regards to refugees, specifically the “Mandatory Sentencing” of Children. It is against the Internaltion law (Geneva Convention) to detain children for a long period of time. Unfortunately there are gaps in our immigration policies that detain illegal entrants and this includes families with children. I worked a few years back at a refuge house and met a mother with two children who just came out from the detention centre with the helped of Women’s group because her son had a behavioural problem and needs counselling. His behavioural problem was believed to be mostly caused by witnessing violence that occurred at the detention centre. The family was at the detention centre for more than three years. Her son basically grew up at the detention centre because he’s almost four when I met them. I think our government is trying to amend this policies because we were criticised many times by the International Refugee org I don’t know the updates to this. I completely support angie’s comments and that’s why I admire her so much and I am pretty there’s a lot of welfare groups out there who is happy and will support her all the way.
