Angelina Jolie tears up comparing her mother to her character

November 18, 2008 by Sherry

While giving a Changeling press conference for the British press, Angelina Jolie teared up while comparing her mother, Marcheline, to her character of Christine Collins.

She said that she was able to relate to her character because of some similarities between Christine and her mother as far as temperament is concerned. I liked how she shared a little personal bit of her mother with us by saying that although her name was Marcheline, everyone called her marshmallow because she was such a softie. She said she never really got angry “couldn’t swear to save her life” and that despite that she could still be strong and fierce to protect her kids.

Since Christine lived in an era where women were decorative and meant to do little more than care for their family and home, and were certainly never meant to speak up, Angelina was able to use her mom’s characteristics to portray a quiet woman in 1928 who had to stand up to an entire corrupt police system.

The video clip made me tear up. It’s very clear that Angelina misses her mother very much, and I can’t imagine that kind of loss, especially when Marcheline wasn’t very old.

If you read the accompanying article, at the end it says that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are planning a big family Christmas, though she didn’t mention where. I’m going to guess either New Orleans, since it’s their official home base, or in Missouri with Brad’s parents, unless obligations have them elsewhere. Their Chateau in France would probably be pretty spectacular for Christmas too – where do you think they’ll be?

  2. mélodie says:

you’re right sherry, i think that they’ll probably go to nola for christmas. hope they could rest a little bit (evrybody in the house is probably tired with all these jetlags! but what a funny life to travel so much!)

  3. niemiec idiota says:

    christmas 2005 – L.A (1st x-mas together)
chrtistmas 2006 – costa rica, panama, colombia
christmas 2007 – NOLA and missouri
    christmas 2008 – ?

maybe ethiopia to highlight kids in need at christmas and to confirm adoption interest?

  4. angela says:

i was pretty suprised too when i saw the video in ET last night, the part where she expressed the “F” word – she must’ve really miss her mom terribly.
i’m guessing it’ll be in the chateau where james and brad’s family will celebrate it with them in that big mansion.

  5. Sherry says:

    niemiec idiota – That’s such a nice thought. :)

  6. mélodie says:

new article on my blog : http://fashionangie.skyrock.com

angela: i’m sorry for your mum.

  7. mélodie says:

    about adoption:

    1) where do you think that brad and angie ‘ll adopt the next child? and why?

my opinion is that they’ll adopt in africa, maybe in darfur. i think they’ll do that for Z in the one hand, and to help a kid in a part of the world where he can’t survive without them.

    2) which kind of child do you think they’ll adopt (boy, girl? young baby or young kid?)

i think they’ll welcome a young kid, not a baby, because of the twins but maybe because a bigger kid ‘ll integrate more easily the family (with other kids of her age…). maybe a kid who has the same age as shiloh?

  8. mélodie says:

it’s a little bit C.reazy: the twins are only 4months old and we are already thinking to the next child!!! lol, i think it’s the funny side with brad and angie: they do a lot of things in a short time, they live at 200% and i think it’s the better way to live!

  9. Kati says:

I know exactly how Angie feels. I lost my mom 13 years ago and I still miss her. She sure thinks about her mum a lot. Especially when she is looking at her own children (Shiloh and the twins). Shi was very young when her garndma Marcheline died (8 months old) and the twins will never get to know her. But they have their paternal grandmother who loves them very much. I´m certain that Angie has brought of her mum´s charasteristicts into the role of Christine Collins. Angie said in this interview that her mum was a very gentle woman but when it came to her children she was very fierce. I guess Angie is like that herself. Loving but still very fierce in protecting their children from all that public writing. No wonder she and Brad won´t bring those six into the public eye too often. I respect them for that a lot. It´s enough that Tom Cruise and Katie Hollmes do that with Suri. I think that they´ll spend Christmas in New Orleans and Missouri so that the children will be able to see their grandparents and other relatives.

Watching that video gives me tears, it really does. My mum is still alive and well but just even the thought of loosing her is devastating enough, and so for poor Angie to have lost her mum already, and she is young to have lost her mum at this age, I just feel so sorry for her. I don’t think anyone can recover loosing their mother, especially a daughter, so I think it is something that will always stick with her.

But Angie is a wonderful tribute to her mother, she’s so like her in physicality and in spirit, her mum would be so proud of her, and the children.

  11. I cried too while watching this video. As her father was not there for her and her brother, their mother was so much more important in their lives and was both mum and dad to them. It must be very hard for Angie to have lost her mum. I feel so much for her.

Recently I looked at People Celebs and I read Angelina’s life and there was a picture of her with her mother.. Whoa Angelina really looks alot like her mom if u saw the pic of Angelina with Kung Fu Panda … Just look at the hairstyle WOW …. I hope the pic shows if I copy and paste that here http://www.people.com/people/angelina_jolie

Anyway I m so glad for Angelina .. She found happiness at last with Brad and their little darlings

  13. CHRISTY says:

I think that if Angie did not have Brad and the Kids to pour out her love on,she maybe would have gone off the deep end, because she misses her mom so much. I think god work in mysterious ways he never give you more than you can bear,
and that’s why she dose not spend time with small people, and small thing her life is much bigger than nasty comment, and gossip. It would be nice for them to spend the holidays in NO or
Missuori, with all of Brad’s family or have his family come to NO. Let’s see what happen.

  14. Neela says:

I imagine she would still tear up just at a mention of her mom, especially because they were best friends. One of my close friends lost her dad a year and a half ago, and it’s very easy for her to tear up to this day even when her dad is only mentioned in passing. Their bond was truly strong.

Despite of Angie’s challenges in her youth, Marcheline did a wonderful job raising her daughter. I believe her mom had a hand in instilling confidence and strength in her daughter because Angie was able to overcome a lot of missteps and gain strength from those.

  15. mélodie says:

kati: i remember you that pax didn’t know marcheline: he joined the family in march and marcheline died in january… so, only maddox and Z really known her

  16. Brittney says:

    That was beautiful.

  17. irma says:

I can imagine how still hard for Angie to talk about her mother’s death, she probably wished Marcheline is still alive today to see Pax, Knox & Viv. She is looking down from heaven with a big smile.
Brad’s birthday is next month.God bless the Jolie-Pitt.

  18. lili says:

i lost my sister last year and i still cry every day just thinking of her..how much more losing a mother..i feel for angie..she is truly and an amazing woman..bless her and her family!!

  19. Randi says:

I love this video, even though I teared up immediately while watching it. It’s got to be hard to have such wonderful children and to not be able to share it with your mother. I hope that she and Brad can enjoy the holidays with their family, including James and Brad’s family.

For a laugh, there’s a vintage Brad video over on my site – it’s from 2001 and is absolutely hilarious – a good way to recover from watching Angelina tearing up.

  20. Randi says:

SHERRY! There’s a new interview that Angelina did with GM TV – have you seen it yet? It’s absolutely great – she talks about everything! I’ve got it over on the site!

(BTW, totally NOT meaning to spam you LOL – it just popped up!)

  21. I felt so bad for Angie when I heard that her mom had died. I felt even worse when, by that Fall, everyone was complaining about her being to skinny. I wanted to say to those people, “The poor woman just lost her mother, for crying out loud!” What with the adoption of Pax and chasing around after 4 kids on top of that, no wonder she lost weight last year!

I even think that Angie may have gone through a period of depression after her mother’s death. Anyway, I wonder if Angie thinks of her mother when she looks at Vivienne, since Viv’s middle name is Marcheline?

  22. Melodie- I think Angie and Brad will adopt their next kid from Africa, but NOT neccesarily Ethiopia. As for why, I think because Angie has talked about wanting to “balance the races” in the house, and Maddox has Pax. As for possibe countries, Darfur is a possibility, although I have a feeling that adopting from there might not be very easy at this point.

I think it’s more likely that, if they want to adopt a child affected by the ongoing Darfur tragedy, they will adopt from Chad, which is right next to Darfur.

Another possibility is Namibia. Namibia is a very special place for the J-Ps, for at least three reasons:

    1. Shi was born there.

    2. It’s in Africa, which is Z’s home continent.

    and

    3. It was in Namibia that Angie first took custody of Maddox (I’m not sure, but I think she was either filming a movie there or doing humanitarian work there).

As for what gender and age of child they’ll adopt, I’m prediciting an older girl, since they choose to adopt an older same gender sibling for Maddox (Pax, obviously). Two other reasons I don’t think they’ll go for a baby? Knox and Viv! I doubt they’d want three babies or toddlers, or two toddlers and one baby!

Given the age range Angie asked for when she applied to adopt Pax (this was obviously before she knew of Pax specifically), I’m guessing the next child they adopt will be between the ages of 2 and 4 (Angie apparently requested a boy between the ages of 3 and 5 when she adopted Maddox, and Mad was nearly six at the time. Likewise, Z will more than likely be 4 by the time Angie begins the adoption process).

I also think Angie and Brad may adopt together this time, as I believe it’s relatively easy for unmarried couples to adopt in most African countries.

I’m even going to predicated an EDA (Estimated Date of Arrival) for Jolie-Pitt kid number 7: November 2009 (that’s assuming they begin the adoption process in January when the twins turn six months old and it takes a little less than a year to go through)!

  23. Oh, and getting back on topic…I don’t know if any of you fellow pittwatchers realize this, but the name Vivienne literally means “live” or “alive”. Because Marcheline has no specific meaning (Angie’s mother created the name by combinding her given first and middle names: Marcia and Lynne), Vivienne’s full name literally means “Live Marcheline”.

  24. mélodie says:

joliepittfanatic: thanks for sharing your opinion with me, it’s great! (i see you have the same opinion that i’ve about the adoption!) thanks.

  25. Mary Ann says:

I think they will spend Christmas and New Years in Missouri and NOLA. They seem to have peace in those places, people aren’t falling all over them. I think it would be pretty terrific if they are in NOLA when Ligaya is there.

  26. mélodie says:

    mary ann:looooooool

  27. I forgot to mention in my previous comments that I remember Angie saying in an interview shortly after Pax’s adoption that it was her mother who chose Pax’s name. She then went on to say something along the lines of “I adopted Pax, and I couldn’t even call my mom up to tell her.” My heart ached for Angie then. She obviously wanted nothing more than to be able to share the joy of adopting Pax with her mother.

I hope she was at least comforted somewhat knowing that Pax’s grandma was likely watching over him during the adoption process, and making sure he got to his new family safely! :)

  28. Ligaya says:

That’s so heartbreaking, JoliePittFan. Every time she looks at Pax or calls his name, Angie must think of Marcheline.

Mary Ann and Melodie, lol. Well, we know they won’t be in NOLA this holiday. So it’ll have to be either 2009 or 2011. I’m determined to have Reveillon Dinner in the French Creole tradition (see menu below) so hubby and I’ll be there one xmas.

    Brennan’s 2008 Reveillon Menu

Choice of: New Orleans Turtle Soup
    Mande’s Seafood and Okra Gumbo
    Oyster Soup Brennan

Choice of: Egg Hussarde – Poached Egg atop a Holland Rusk, Canadian Bacon, Marchand de Vin Sauce, Topped with Hollandaise Sauce
Egg Sardou – Poached Egg on an Artichoke Bottom in a Bed of Creamed Spinach and Covered with Hollandaise Sauce

Brennan Salad – Romaine Lettuce with Tangy Creole Dressing, Grated Parmesan Cheese and Croutons

Choice of: Baby Rack of Lamb Roussel – Grilled Whole and Sliced into Mini-Chops. Served with Bearnaise and Choron Sauce and a Bouquetierre of Fresh Vegetables
Trout Amandine – Filet Trout Sauteed and Topped with Lemon Butter Sauce and Slivered Almonds, Accompanied by Fresh Potatoes
Pepper Tournedos – Finely Ground Peppercorns are Pressed into Two Prime Tournedos. Served in a Sauce of Natural Juices, Brandy and Cream.

Bananas Foster – Bananas Sauteed in Butter, Brown Sugar, Cinnamon, and Banana Liqueur, then flambeed in Rum. Served over Vanilla Ice Cream.

    $85

(in San Francisco, this would easily run at least $200, and the hotels cost twice as much too)

  29. Mary Ann says:

Ligaya I get Cooking Light each month and when yesterdays copy arrived I thought of you right away. There is a whole section about a family in NOLA and their Reveillon Menu and recipes. Maybe there would be something on the website.
Gee I was getting excited for you and hubby thinking that maybe Brad, Angie and kids would be in NOLA and you might see them from a distance. Oh well, now I think they are going to Africa where two of their daughters were born. Maybe they will make arrangements to start up two more foundations in Zee and Shi’s names.

  30. Sarah says:

The dignity with which Angelina shows herself so vulnerable is just amazing. She is so gorgeous, it is simply incredible how beautiful she is, as a human being.
