Angelina Jolie tops the Reuters Celebrity Do-Gooder Poll
Reuters has released the results of their poll for the best celebrity humanitarians of 2007. No surprise to all of us here, Angelina Jolie topped the list for celebrity do-gooders this year thanks to her tireless work with the U.N. as their goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR.
According to the article, there’s a reason someone like Angelina gets the top, whereas someone like Madonna - who raised a lot of money for orphans in Malawi but raised eyebrows with her rule-bending Malawian adoption - doesn’t do so well in these polls:
“People aren’t stupid,” said Peter Walker, director of the Feinstein International Famine Center at Tufts University.
“They can really sense when it’s just an endorsement and when somebody really means it. Someone like Angelina Jolie comes across as having more integrity than some celebrities and a greater sense that she doesn’t just do this for the publicity.”
Not only was Angelina the top celebrity humanitarian, she pulled ahead of several other big-name philanthropists like Bono (someone I also greatly admire) and Bill Gates, both of whom have also helped to bring Africa into the spotlight.
The article also mentioned that Angelina really involves herself in her causes by traveling to hot spots and not treating humanitarianism like a new hobby.
Since becoming an ambassador in 2001 for the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR, she has visited more than 20 humanitarian hot spots, most recently Iraq.
“She does this in a very low-key way,” said UNHCR spokesman Peter Kessler. “She goes out to see for herself, to get up close and very personal. She doesn’t travel with film crews, and I think that is real testimony to her dedication to the cause.”
Brad Pitt came in at number ten on the list for his considerable efforts in New Orleans as well as routinely standing up as an advocate for Darfur.

Irma, you said it so well. These two are the real deal and I am so happy that they are being recognized as such. Angelina said not to long ago that she wants to be recognized for more than her acting. And I feel like Brad has reached that point also. These are two very good and sincere people. God Bless them both.

As a fan, I tried my best to be as good citizen & best role model to my kids & my g-kids. Someday, they will remember me & thank me for instilling to them the real value of honesty, compassion & my belief in God. I tried to help others in a very small way, I can’t be Ange & Brad, they are doing a lot of good to people, they are angels sent down to us, their selfless acts to others are beyond me.
