Angelina Jolie’s Washington Post Editorial
Today’s Washington Post features an editorial written by Angelina Jolie. It’s about her recent visit to Iraq and the refugee crisis there.
The request is familiar to American ears: “Bring them home.”
But in Iraq, where I’ve just met with American and Iraqi leaders, the phrase carries a different meaning. It does not refer to the departure of U.S. troops, but to the return of the millions of innocent Iraqis who have been driven out of their homes and, in many cases, out of the country.

I’ve read it, and I am simply amazed at the beauty and brains of our dear Angelina. If not for her, this article wouldn’t go maintream.

Like Pinky said, if this weren’t written by someone like Angelina, it probably wouldn’t have made it to print. So just another example of how Angelina is using her celebrity in a very good way. It is important for everyone to understand how these situations and conditions are occurring in many parts of the world, and Angie has done a pretty good job of bringing to light some of them. Detractors will keep saying she’s only doing for self-promotion, but they miss the point entirely. She is truly someone to admire. I just wish there were more celebrity like her.

I can’t say enough about Angelina. She is amazing. I don’t know where she finds the energy for her charity work, and her dedication to the refugee crisis is inspiring.

I don’t know where she finds the courage from, but credit should be given where credit is due. She knows her stuff.

i have great affection for this woman. Most americans are brain washed. But she remains to have her own view.
i spent some time in the middle east. when crossing the boarder from jordan to syria, met a iraqie woman all in tears. she managed to flee from iraq to syria on an 22 hours bus, but was refused by jordan for entrance hence had to go back to syria. it is true the refugee numbers in both countries are reaching their max and it is getting harder and harder for refugees from iraq to get in.
When I was traveling in central america, I shared a bus ride with a califonia software engineer. We had a great conversation until he asked me about my experience in cuba. I said the economy is not doing so great, and he said, cuba, they just need to apology, and now castro is dead we should start sending guns into their country!
hello? brain washed american. cant be bothered talking to him afterwards.

What a moving, intelligent piece. Angie really nailed it. I hope someone, somewhere, that can actually change American policy, read this and was moved by it.

Very down to earth, smart, loving, brilliant, gorgeous, mysterious in some ways, humanitarian, compassionate; you could run out of adjectives to describe Angelina but she and Brad Pitt are the embodiment of the kind of people that would make this world of ours a wonderful place to live. if more celebrities with money will only do even half as much as they do , then there will be less sufferings .
I love Angie and Brad forever and their children. More power and god bless the Jolie-pitt family.

I’m glad she wrote this piece. I think people in the DC area are really taking notice of this article, and unfortunately, I think both parties are using her piece to advance their respective political views. I don’t think she was being political, but she’s calling attention to the long-term consequences of the war and now, the need for humanitarian assistance.
It’s such a good piece that her detractors are boldly claiming that she didn’t write it. It’s so ridiculous because they are talking about a woman who has spoken to political delegates in numerous international arenas. And she did just come from Iraq and has had the chance to converse with the soldiers there and hear their views. It’s just laughable that people have a limited perspective of her, just a movie star and humanitarian, but she can’t be smart at the same time and be capable of writing an impactful and intelligent piece? Hmmm.

Did Jolie write this, or was it written by Marianne Pearl? Either way I like the context.

it´s a remarkable article, but i think it´s very naiv, too. she does point out the problematic of the whole war, but the solutions she gives can never ever be realised in the near future. she just looks at this war from the humanitarian point of view and does not see the political, economic and financial aspects. and i don´t think that serious politicians will ever look at this article. it´s a shame though, it was a smart article.

Yeah, of course, it has it shortcomings when it come to the political and financial aspect, but at the same time, I don’t think the article is meant to be political. It’s just imploring to see the humanitarian side, which is more of her expertise. (Another reason why it’s admirable that she’s not endorsing anyone publicly in the entire race for presidency.) If radio personality Rush Limbaugh (heaven help me, I can’t stand him, but admittedly, compared to me and many of us here, he probably knows more about politics) would take notice, claimed that the article’s been a big buzz, and assert that she makes more sense than the presidential candidates, then, it’s safe to say that she resonated with at least one or two serious politicians out there, especially the ones with a heart. However, like I said, her article can be misconstrued by either major party to advance their own views. I think with Angie’s piece, the idea is to just start making steps towards mending things, of helping each other out. I don’t think anyone, including Angie, sees it really as things have to be fixed now, but things have to start somewhere. It’s just a call to action to start being proactive. Naturally, the road to remedying the situation there is a long one, but at the same time, just because a realized solution is not near does not mean that little effort should be invested or that we shouldn’t start considering solutions. At least to me, that’s how the article came off, and she did visit Iraq and with the troops to obtain some insight, so, there is some credibility in the article. But of course, it’s different for everyone :) and the sad thing is, people are more caught up with her public image as a movie star and a partner to another famous celeb.

My post is awaiting moderation … but oops, I meant to say, and the sad thing is, there are people who are more caught up with her public image as a movie star and a partner to another famous celeb that perhaps some of them, serious politician or not, won’t consider her article as of any good consequence. But that’s just one of the disadvantages of being a celeb, I guess.

[…] things to say about Angelina Jolie’s op-ed piece for the Washington Post that she wrote the other day. Although she’s definitely focusing more on the human side of things, the displaced people […]

yes Neela i agree. being a celeb makes things more difficult. but having a tiny bit of experience in that area i have to say that her article was good indeed, but unlikely an option to take on the war, at least not in the next decade.
isn´t that Rush Limbaugh a talkshow master (sorry i don´t know that guy)?
Angie wrote a book about her humanitarian work BTW (i forgot the title), it´s great and worth reading.

Yeah, I’ve been meaning to read that book, too, but my schedule’s hectic. Thanks for the heads up on it :) Heh, I forgot the title, too, though.
Are you a journalist? :) I think it’s a very good and reputable job. That was my sister’s major, but she says it’s also competitive as graphic design (which is what I do).
