Angelina’s Reader’s Digest interview
Reader’s Digest has a wonderful interview with Angelina Jolie where she talks about Brad, and of course the kids. Thanks to Celebrity Baby Blog for typing up the interview!
Angelina on getting together with Brad: I met this amazing person, and we realized we had very similar views on how we wanted to live our lives. It’s happened so quickly, with so many children. Yesterday, picking up the kids from school, Brad turned around in the car, and there were the three of them. He couldn’t stop laughing. We love them and are having a great time.
Having Shiloh was actually planned: Before I met Brad, I always said I was happy never to have a child biologically. He told me he hadn’t given up on that thought. Then, a few months after Z came home, I saw Brad with her and Mad, and I realized how much he loved them, and a biological child would not in any way be a threat. So I said, ‘I want to try.’
Pax loves his newfound freedom: Pax is almost three and a half and has never made a real decision for himself because everybody does everything in a group in the orphanage. There were all these things he’d never had. The first time I gave him a bath, he was suddenly laughing, out of his mind. He took five baths in one day. We’d be talking and he’d take his clothes off and run into the bathroom.
How is Pax adjusting to his new life?: The first two days, he cried a lot. I hired a translator, and he would explain what was going on. The first night, I slept alone with him. I was expecting him to wake up and scream, but he woke and just stared at me. I handed him a stuffed animal, and we walked around the room pointing at things. By day three, he didn’t want me to put him down. I think he got used to the reality that somebody loves you and that’s what a mommy is.
Don’t worry, each of the Jolie-Pitt kids have their own special time with mommy and daddy: We had a long talk with Mad about the fact that his brother is going to be scared and that Mommy is going to have to give him attention. Then we’ve tried to figure out a lot of private time for each of them. When everybody goes to bed, we give Mad time. When everybody is at school, we give Shiloh time. In between, Z and Pax each get special time. And on Sundays, we have a big family sleep, when the boys get in bed with us and we watch a movie. It started with Mad, then Pax, and now Z is desperate to move into the bed. We’re talking about having to build a bigger bed!
Brad makes everyone feel safe: I think Pax, after seeing how much Zahara and Mad and Shi love Brad, understands that he’s his daddy. Everybody seems to be safe in his arms. He makes everybody laugh. He helps everybody.
It is true that they adopted Pax so Maddox would have a brother who looked like him: Something changed for me with Shiloh. We had Mad and Z, and neither looked like Mommy or Daddy. Then suddenly somebody in the house looks like Mommy and Daddy. It became clear to us that it might be important to have somebody around who is similar to the other children so they have a connection. Mad’s been very excited that his brother is from Asia.
Why they chose to adopt a toddler: As kids get older, it’s harder for them to be adopted. I wasn’t prepared a few years ago, but I felt now our home was stable and I could balance that.
Who’s the disciplinarian in the family?: When it comes to the boys, it’s Brad, and with the girls, it’s me. It’s not intentional, but Z can pretty much get anything she wants from her dad. Brad’s like a strong father with the boys.
More kids?: Yeah, yeah. More biological. More adopted.
Some further snippets of the interview are below the cut, keep reading!
Angelina knows what kind of legacy she wants to leave as a mother: I don’t do drugs. I don’t intentionally ride a motorcycle without a helmet. I will always be careful. But I live a bold life, and I’m a happy mother because of that. I think the bigger question is, ‘Am I living the life that I want my kids to see?’ If something happened to me doing something I believed in, then I suppose that’s the legacy I would leave as a mother.
On filming the movie, A Mighty Heart, while pregnant: When we worked on the script, I was six months pregnant. Mariane [Pearl] sat with me and held my hand and told me what was happening to her when she was six months pregnant. I thought, ‘My God, I know what I’m feeling right now and I can’t imagine handling that. It was so important for me to have my family and Brad with me at the time, and to understand it’s that life — Adam, Mariane’s child — that clearly pulled her through.
Amongst the chaos, how does Angelina and Brad spend quiet, alone time with each other?: Right now, that’s our problem! We hang out. We try to talk over the swing set. We’ll have a date night once everybody is settled. Pax still gets scared if I’m gone for more than a few hours. But we’ll get them occupied with a movie and popcorn and try to run off and lock the door for a bit.
With all the gossip about them, does it ever get to them?: Our first question is what paper is it in. The New York Times? If not, do we really need to worry?
There’s no conspiracy to why the couple doesn’t feel the need to get married: We’ve both been married before. Our focus when we got together was family, and we are legally bound to our children. That really seems to be the most important thing.
Brad sees Angelina as many things, but nothing is better than seeing her be a mom: He encourages the right things. If I’ve had a full day and just really been a hands-on mom, he’ll make a point to let me know that’s something he’s proud of. If I’m writing an Op-Ed, he’s the first person to want to read the drafts. I could be dressed up in the sexiest outfit for a photo shoot, and by his behavior, he’ll let me know that’s nice, but it’s nothing as sexy as when I’m home surrounded by the kids or reading books, educating myself. He slows me down to get it right, to relax into the strength of my family and the love.
What a great interview! Thanks again to the source, Celebrity Baby Blog, and thanks to reader Phoebe who let me know in the first place.
Also, thank you very much for the compliments on the new layout of this blog but I can’t take any credit - I was just as surprised when I saw it this morning as you were! Kudos to the b5media designers, I love this new template!

Angelina seems is looking for love and purpose of life all her life. She finally find true love with Brad and UN worker as the purpose of life. She is so contented now. I am very happy for them. Two world most beautifull people fall in love and have beautiful kids and beautiful family. And also they are extremely caring for others and generous. This is a really fairy tale. Brangelina for ever for life.

I CANT HELP BUT LOVE THIS FAMILY. IM OBSESSED AND I CANT HELP IT. ITS A BREATHE OF FRESH AIR TO SEE SOME PEOPLE IN HOLLYWOOD THAT ARE STILL HUMBLE AND NORMAL. I WISH THEM THE BEST AND I HOPE THAT WILL CONTINUE TO ADOPT MORE CHILDREN AS WELL AS HAVE BIOLOGICAL ONES!

First of all Sherry, Wow, Wow, Wow I love this new design. And what a perfect interview, Angie is so happy and Brad so in love with her and the children. They are both really more beautiful inside, aside from their gifted genes. I know the tabs are pesky and Angie is on the cover again this week
(they gave Kate Holmes a rest) titled “The other man” meaning Martinez’s lap dance partner. Another creative writing fabrication that some people believe in. Anyway, did you see that, she said on this interview, yes more biological, more adopted… Yeah! Thanks Sherry, you can take the credit for this and for those designers who made this possible, a big thank you. I don’t think Angie will be with Brad on Ocean’s 13 premiers all over the 3 cities because she will be with the kids. I live in Orange County, California and I really want to go to the one in Los Angeles on June 5th (I think June 5th is also Angie’s birthday) and most likely Grumman’s theater will be packed.

I just wonder, while it’s a good interview…why is she backtracking on her pregnancy? She did an interview last year that she claimed the pregnancy was not planned. I mean, why lie? She has stated before and she did mention that, that she did not want biological children until she met Brad. But after Shiloh, she did an interview and said the pregnancy was NOT planned. How do you go from one to the other?

I read early on that Angelina commented that Shiloh wasn’t planned and that Angelina got “knocked up”. Come on Angelina, get your story straight.

BAMPZS is definitely very happy & contented with their life full of so much love. They don’t even give a care to the tabloids who are trying their damnest to make their life miserable. Poor tabloids spilling lies!!!
Anyway, I am so happy with the “more biological” statement of Angie. I’m so excited to see another little Brangelina. And I hope it would be a son.
I’ll be forever praying for this family’s happiness.

thanks Sherry!!!
Great interview! Angie is always been honest and not pretentious… I’m glad that she finally set the records straight.. I just wish that Brad would be more open, however I get this feeling that to him his love nor private life with Angie is not for sale, and he just let’s Angie speak..
Also, they are walking the walk!!! great examples to all us!! both have found their purpose and doing their part to help change the world we live in!! much love and power to BAMPZS family!!

REALLY glad to see this article, hope it slows down the tabloids. Her words make me smile a LOT. They’ve seem to have foudn such a balance in their work lives too. I’ve noticed that they are alternating filming and big projects. (Brad does a moive, small break, then Angie does a movie, small break, then some global work)
That’s way cool.

I love the interview and am so glad that all is well with the Bragelina household. This is truly a beautiful family inside and out with wonderful humanitarian intentions so it would be great if the tabloids would let them have some peace and relationship success instead of trying to create problems for them. Thanks for printing a story with a positive spin for us to read on this loving couple and family. I wish the Bragelinas much love, happiness, peace and continued satisfaction, joy with their humanitarian quests.

I swear I was melting and ohhing and awwing while I was reading it. I just think that was sooo sweet and romantic. You get this feeling that it is true love. Something I don’t think people don’t believe in anymore. What a beautiful family inside and outside.

Some more of the above artical is at Readers Digest:
RD: You lost your mother a few months ago. How are you coping?
Jolie: I’m one of those people who walk around as if it’s fine, and then suddenly I don’t know why I’m crying over my breakfast. My mother was my best friend. I’m so grateful I had her as a mom. She had cancer for seven years, but she lived long enough to see my brother and I grow up to be quite happy. You almost get the feeling she held on until it was okay.
RD: I just read A Mighty Heart, on which your new film is based. What drew you to make this film?
Jolie: We’re living in a time when there’s so much anger and a lack of faith in our ability to find solutions together. Mariane is a person who has every right to be full of hate, and yet she’s completely the opposite. She wants to have dialogue with people; that’s how Danny was, with his appreciation and interest in that side of the world. To shoot the film, people from Pakistan, India, Britain, America, Muslims, Christians came together. It’s an example of what is possible.
RD: The story is anguishing. Was it hard to re-create what happened?
Jolie: It was difficult thinking, What if Adam sees this one day? The pressure normally is wondering what the audience is going to take out of it. It’s very different when you feel the story represents a family you want to honor.
RD: You seem equally committed to philanthropy. Do you truly donate a third of your income to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees?
Jolie: Not to the UNHCR. I was making a lot of money for something that is a pleasure and realizing how a third of that would end up doing a lot of good. I just don’t need that much. It’s a simple decision. And now Brad and I have started the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. The first thing we focused on was AIDS orphans around the world.
RD: There’s a saying that it’s not your job to fix the whole world; it’s your job to do your part. What’s your part?
Jolie: As my mom did, raise the kids with a lot of love and make sure they grow into the individuals they were born to be. Separate from that, I want to continue to educate myself. I’m trying to learn more about international law to understand why we don’t have better solutions for conflict — for dictators or aggressors that are hurting or raping children or using them as child soldiers. Why can’t we have an international community handle these things in a swift, efficient manner?
RD: You’ve said that A Mighty Heart is also a love story. Did Danny and Mariane Pearl’s partnership have parallels to yours with Brad?
Jolie: They are what we strive to be. They met with a common goal that was so noble. They dedicated their lives to studying other cultures and trying to make a better world through honest journalism. They clearly set each other on fire to do really wonderful things in the world.
RD: Is that true with you and Brad? It didn’t seem he had the passion to do the humanitarian work before you.
Jolie: I discovered a man who’s extremely thoughtful, intelligent and invested in many issues. He’s just more quiet in his way. I think that’s the reason I love him. If I’m curious about something, I put my boots on and I’ll go tomorrow. I’ve been too outspoken. He’s the person who methodically figures out what he believes in and how he’s going to handle something, then does it seamlessly.
RD: Do you and Brad ever have a conflict or a fight?
Jolie: Not really. We’ll get into issues about global events or something that was just on the news.
RD: The gossip is unrelenting. You’re fighting, you’re jealous, he’s going back to Jennifer. Does it get to you?
Jolie: Our first question is what paper is it in. The New York Times? If not, do we really need to worry?
RD: But at the Golden Globes, you seemed in a bad mood, and that was in The New York Times.
Jolie: Yeah. And that was when my mother was about to die. Others have said we were getting married. We are people who want a good newspaper and television report, so when it’s lies about us, it makes us wonder what else are they not double-checking.

I really like Angelina because she always comes across as a “real” person. She’s not afraid to put herself out there. Heck, you have many stars who would never have the balls to admit there good points and faults like she has. She has such a “human” quality that not just all “gloss” and “smoke and mirrors.” YOU GO GIRLFRIEND!!!

this may sound crazy, but everyday i come home the very first thing i would do is to go on line and repeatedly look at brangelina’s family pictures especially of brad holding shiloh. What an adorable child she is. Brad, I think is a wonderful father to her. I just love to see them together. Angelina needs to give him another biological child he desperately need. It would make his life complete.

here’s the deal - went to Lainey for the very first time tonight, but I went there because I was at ANOTHER site that said Lainey had partial audio for the Reader’s Digest interview. Went there, as I said for the very first time, and there is a link to part of the interview. Not endorsing any other site, especially that one, but I did want to let others know.

love this family!!! Have never followed any celebrity before, but can’t help myself. I can’t believe people still bring up the Jen thing. Angie has soul and a mission in life. Jen seems shallow. Brad wanted a family and Jen had 7yrs to make it happen. I love BAMPZand especiallyS

I loved the interview. I just found this website and am so relieved to find a place that isn’t constantly trying to lead readers to the conclusion that Brad and Angelina’s days are numbered. Thanks for a great site. P.S. I know they are rarely photographed sharing a tender moment but I’d love to see it. (Loved the picture of them enjoying dinner together in Prague.) I’d also like to see more of Angelina with Shiloh (help dispell some of those nasty rumors as well.) And finally, I’d like to hear Brad talk about his love for Angelina. It seems we’ve really only heard her speak publically about why she loves him and what a great person he is.
I think this family is great and I wish them a lifetime of happiness TOGETHER.

I adored Brad when he was with Paltrow. Then he hooked up with Aniston, I didn’t care about him anymore. When he got together with Jolie, I became a diehard Brangelina.. Brad and Angie are two wonderful people with a kind heart. I have so much respect for them as they selflessly share their time, resources and life to people in need.
