Beowulf Reactions

Thus far, Beowulf has done quite well in theaters and has gotten some pretty good reviews. By request, here’s a place for all of you PittWatch readers to leave your own personal reactions to the film and share your opinions after seeing the film. I haven’t been able to see it yet, unfortunately, so until I get the chance I’ll enjoy reading your thoughts.
Be warned though, before you venture into the comments here. If you’ve read Beowulf (I loved it, one of the best English assignments ever), then you’ll know most of the story, but if you’re not familiar with it, there may be spoilers within the comments, so be careful if you don’t want someone spilling the beans!
Go forth, comment, tell us what you thought!
(The photo, which is from here, shows Angelina Jolie during the filming. So cool!)

Hi, I´m from Sweden and I´ve also read Beowulf, since it was included in the litterature for the litterature course I took at Lunds university last year. I love it, especially because it takes place in Sweden and Denmark (not in England, even though people seem to think so), it is written in England, but it is an old story from the nordic countries. Beowulf is fighting the “goths” (”goter” or “göter” in Swedish) and that is the old name (still used today, I am for example an east-goth) for people from middle Sweden.
The movie is really cool, I just wanted to point out that it does not take place in England.

I’ve seen the movie and she’s just amazing, wonderful and awesome as always. she has a pretty good voice also. although Grendel was a demon, angie played such a perfect, loving mom( as in her real life) that when he dies she sings to him, an incredibly touching song with an incredibly touching voice that I almost cried!! can u believe it!! have u ever cried for a demon dying in a movie??? she plays that good and she only does it with her voice!! you dont even see her at that scene!!! Our angie is such a strong talent and I curse the ones who try to show her the opposite on purpose, just to hurt her. But one thing they should know, she doesn’t even pay attention to them. Anyway, I just want her (deeply from my heart) to win another oscar this year. There’s no one else who deserves it more… with huge love to all brangelina supporters… IREM from Istanbul, TURKEY. :)

Angelina’s new movie Beowulf was great in 3D, but I wish there was more Angie. The music is very suspenseful, and there is also some humor in it. She did a great job of playing the protective mother of Grendel. I wouldn’t take kids below age 10 to see it because it is quite gorey and sensual. Great Job though Angie! I cant wait for the move WANTED and the other one called THE CHANGELING to come out…they both look good. I hope Angie wins an Oscar for A Mighty heart , because even people who are NOT fans are saying she deserves it for her performance!

Six of us saw the movie in IMAX 3D last evening. We were totally blown away! The whole movie was just stunning, we had a 50 min drive home, and nobody could stop talking about the movie. During the opening credits, water starts falling, slowly, before you, and soon a shimmering wall of water has covered the credits. Angie was dazzling, and yes, I wish there had been more of her, it’s amazing how beautiful she is. If you can possibly manage to see it in 3D, make the effort. One of our group had seen it in the normal format, and he said the 3D made an enormous difference.

I agree to all the fans who made comments about the movie. It is really an amazing movie, make it more amazing because our Angie is there though in a small part but it makes a lot of difference to the story. She is really so beautiful, I give her credit for her performance. My husband & I watched it last week in 3-D, we drove 45 minutes to see it, I plan to see it again, it is entertaining but not recommended for a very young ones. The movie is doing good here in the States & overseas.Congratulations to the casts & crews of Beowulf.

These are just my first impressions from the 9:30 pm show – full house (there was also a midnight show). OH YEAH, definitely worth seeing in 3D, and the IMAX 3D is superlative. Does the movie/story work? A resounding yes. You don’t have to know the classic story, and if you do know it – it’s interesting to see the changes the scriptwriters made. The first half is a little slow because it’s setting up the last half – which is a more than satisfying payoff. The movie asks: what is a hero?, what is a monster?, what is human? It’s very moving. My highlights: sheet of water in the opening credits, the running joke early on, Grendel’s mom, the DRAGON. The final action sequence must be seen to be believed.
Angelina has limited visual screen time, as does John Malkovich, but she is present throughout the movie either with her voice or characters talking about her. And her character is as key to the story as Beowulf. At the first sight of Angelina emerging from the pool (a la Marlon Brando in Apocalypse now and many movies since), the 75% male audience were moaning and cheering. It was really quite funny. With every reveal from her face to her breasts to her pelvic area to her heels and finally to the whole digital Angelina, dripping in chocolate gold, the fanboys reacted. Her face is Shiseido perfection. Angelina’s performance was spot on, literally pitch perfect. Totally seductive, not evil, it’s her words as much as her appearance that mortal men find impossible to ignore. It’s their souls they willingly hand over as she exploits their weaknesses and becomes the agent of their downfall. (I thought that this must be what anti-Angelina 8ers believe Angelina the person to be.)
Sir Anthony is magnificent as always, Ray Winstone heroic, and Crispin Glover as Grendel is as pitiful as he is monstrous. Brendan Gleeson, Beowulf’s second in command, gives a wonderful performance. Beowulf looks nothing like Ray Winstone, Grendel’s mom looks totally like Angelina, and we recognize Sir Anthony’s & Malkovich’s faces & voices but they have different bodies from their own, Robin Wright Penn & Alison Lohman look nothing like themselves.
Motion-capture and 3D: The 3D is incredible/magnificent. At first, it was like looking at those toy stereoscopes (can’t remember their names – senior moment). Then it became naturally 3D like our real world. The switch from 2D to 3D is going to be like the change from silent movies to talkies. The motion capture is about 80-90% there. Some of the characters are a little stiff and not realistic, others Like Angelina we could swear was real not digital, galloping horses need improvement.
I think are awards worthy: animation, stirring musical score.

Cheryl, if I remember right, the digital mapping of Angelina was done before she performed her part. She was 4 months pregnant when she did the performance of Grendel’s mother.

Klara thank you for the info.
I agree with everyone about this film. We saw it 3D at the local theatre because we couldn’t make it in time to an IMAX.
Angie just didn’t have enough screen time. There was an incredible tangible energy in the air when she was on screen. Don’t get me wrong the other actors were just as brilliant but Angie was electrifying. Lit up the screen, ;) NO PUN intended.

Yes I agree, we need more screen time for Angie. She is so mesmerizing and her voice is powerful. Great IMAX movie. My husband said, these oral stories were recorded by monks during old English folklore era although the setting was Denmark.

Variety, By Dave McNary:
TOP STORY
‘Beowulf’ wins overseas box office
The animated re-telling of the epic poem, handled by Warner Bros. internationally, has cumed $48.5 million overseas for a combined worldwide total of $105 million. With little competition on the action front until “I Am Legend” opens in mid-December, “Beowulf” should remain a decent draw for several more weeks with openings next frame in Australia, Brazil and Japan.
“Beowulf” easily conquered the foreign box office, dominating the weekend with $26 million at 5,400 playdates in 43 markets for its second straight international victory.
“Beowulf,” which more than doubled its foreign run, scored best in its Russian launch with a first-place $4.3 million, 20% better than “Van Helsing.”
In a French frame held down by a public transport strike, “Beowulf” put the bite on $2 million in its launch. It won in Mexico with a $1.9 million opening, stayed in first in South Korea with $1.4 million.

I saw the movie just yesterday, and I agree with you, Angie was great and I loved the 3D and special effects. But I think it was a little too bloody: wouldn’t bring a kid under 10 to see it. However, she was amazing and I wish she had a little more screen time.
Sherry, I’m new at Pittwatch, and I wanted to tell you that your blog is fantastic. Congratulation.

Just love it! The visual effect is stunning (I watched the HD 3-D), great action and the flow is smooth. You almost forgot this is an animated film towards the end, but the glassy eyes give it away, it is animated afterall. The scene with Angie emerging from the water is heart throbbing, and the music is great…Grendel’s mom is beautiful, a little more girlish than Angie, but I do think Angie is prettier in person. It’s a great 3-D movie, an enjoyable experience!

I definitely love it! i love the moral of the story, the music score, the visual effects, the naked sexy angie as the super seductive she devil, and i LUST the beowulf character very much! oh gawd! that beowulf is super hot! hotter that leonidas in 300. i know the real ray winstone does not look like that. but they create an imaginary hot character. and i lust it soooo much! especially the way he stares at the queen. sooo bloody hot!
i did not read the book, but i think that grendel’s father was sir anthony hopkins’ character. is that rite? my conclusion is angie’s character always teases the new king to give her a son so that she can give birth to another monster.
and i like the way grendel’s mom coming out from the water! super.duper.sexy!
