Beowulf tops the box office

by Sherry on November 18th, 2007

Hooray! According to several box office results listings, including Movies.com, Beowulf topped the box office this weekend with a weekend gross of over $28 million! It blew two other first-week runs right out of the water (Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium and Love in the Time of Cholera - both movies I actually want to see too), and pretty well trampled everything else.

Awesome news!

I knew it, # 1. Hooray. Congratulations to the actors & crews of Beowulf. It will continue to make money to the box office this week, the following week & so on. It’s really a great movie. Angie is stunning & pulled her character real well. I like her voice & the accent. I may add, I like the music too of Beowulf.Love the movie.

I love it too. My husband and I and my son and a friend (another teenage boy) went with us at the IMAX and it was awesome. The theatre was full and the next showing had long lines coming in. Angie’s close-ups were very enchanting and her voice, wow. There was part in the scene when A. Hopkins said, and “she is no hag.” When you see it, you will understand why he said that. Hooray for “Beowulf” what a wonderful movie. Kung Fu Panda will be out this summer. I saw a poster inside the theater lobby.

    North America

A long-dreaded English class assignment morphed into America’s favorite movie this weekend as Paramount’s “Beowulf” conquered the domestic boxoffice with an estimated $28.1 million.

“Beowulf,” which opened roughly as expected, padded its boxoffice haul with strong grosses from about 850 3-D screens in 742 locations. Those included 84 Imax screens, which contributed almost $3.6 million, an amazing $42,619 per screen.

The pic’s 3-D theaters represented 20% of its overall engagements but contributed 40% to its weekend gross, execs said.

Action dominated foreign multiplexes as “Beowulf” fended off a spirited challenge from “American Gangster” to conquer the international weekend box office with $17 million at 2,500 playdates in 13 markets.

The eyes have it: Like the poet says, eyes are windows to the soul.
“Beowulf” visual effects supervisor Jerome Chen was acutely aware of that fact when he embarked on director Bob Zemeckis’ latest experiment in motion-capture animation. Chen and his Sony Imageworks team of 450 digital artists spent three years creating fire-breathing dragons, jaw-dropping Angelina Jolie moments, dread-filled vistas of fog, snow and rain and a period-perfect medieval Mead Hall. But none of the 3-D spectacle would carry much emotional weight unless the characters seemed real.
To make that happen, Chen says, the filmmakers had to get the eyes right.
“Actors do a lot of acting with their eyes, and a big criticism that came up for our previous mo-cap picture ‘The Polar Express’ was that the eyes didn’t feel like they had realistic movement,” says Chen.
To capture subtle shifts in expression, Chen decided to re-purpose a sports medicine technology known as EOG, short for Electrooculography.
“Doctors attach electrodes to the muscles of athletes to measure electrical discharge. Since it’s the muscles around the eye that actually move the eye, Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie and the other actors had electrodes attached around their eyes that go to this little box on top of their heads. The box is wired to this recording device at the small of their backs which basically converts the electrical discharge of the muscles around the eyes into animation curves. We then applied that to make the CG characters’ eyes move in the same way the actors’ eyes were doing.”
That’s a long way to go to capture nuances live-action filmmakers could accomplish with a simple close-up. Bottom line for Chen: It’s the little things that make digitized characters come alive. “When we started doing our tests two years ago we realized the characters just didn’t feel engaging enough. We knew ‘Beowulf’ couldn’t look cartoony, so to get that extra level of realism we needed to add detail, and that comes across as eye movement, wrinkles, freckles, which have a different level of brightness than the skin pores - it all gets very complex.”

Congrats to crew/cast! They must be proud. & with thanksgiving coming around the corner, this film is sure to make more dough.

I really don’t know if I should see this movie though. The only reason I even considered seeing this movie is because Angelina’s in it. So I really don’t know if I’m going to see it or not. But congratz again crew/cast!

Thanks Sherry for posting the pic’s of the Jolie-Pitt’s. I especially love the ones of each of them whispering in each others ears and the pure love between them. The heat between them is undeniable. I’m sick of the rags and some legit mags, say how they aren’t getting along. They don’t look like they are faking anything….

I am so happy!!! now lets get out there and suport Jesse James. Take everyone you know to see it. Lets prove those bloody tabloids wrong,(they have not lost box office appeal because of overexposed private life).

    lol@Cheryl.

The tabloids are the ONE’s who “over-exposed” them.

It’s amazing that they never take responsibility for their actions. Two years ago a producer was asked if MI 3 did not do as expected because TC was over exposed? His response: “Who over exposed him?” ‘It’s strange/weird
that you guys create a situation then exclaim that the situation exists.’

Or words along those lines anyway.

Jesse James is Warner Bros’ baby and they have decided to throw it out with the bath water, (for reasons best known to them), despite almost EVERYONE cooing over the baby.

It cost less than 35m to make, they could easliy have made back their money, especially international.

It’s in ?100 screens now, nowhere near me. :(

Thank you Sherry and Ligaya for the update on Beowulf. I was all set to see it Sunday but then I got sick after working 18 hours straight Saturday! I still plan to see it this weekend.

**Bijou - I am happy for Angie, people were saying she is box office poison.

The reason it tops the box office, is that the movie was great..beautiful..not because of Angelina.. so whether Angelina is not in the movie..still it will tops the box office….

I respectfully beg to differ & how can you possibly KNOW that? Would you say the same if Anthony Hopkins or John Malkowich weren’t in it? I doubt it. I love all three of these actors and it DOES matter who’s in the movie.

There’s lots of things which make Beowulf successful. IMO, it’s the combination - not any one thing - that made it #1 on opening weekend. Some people love Zemeckis, some love the different actors (like Angelina), some love the story, some love gore/sword/sorcery/dragon/demons/witches action epics, some love the animation & technology, etc. I think if anyone of these were missing, including Angelina Jolie, it wouldn’t have been as successful. It’s like a delicious, complex gourmet recipe which would be totally thrown off without all its ingredients.

ANGELINA RULES!!!CONGRATS FOR A JOB WELL DONE!!

  • ligaya
    Nov 20, 2007 at 12:44 pm

Having said that (my post is under moderation ;-) ), Angelina Jolie contributed a LOT to Beowulf’s success. First of all, Grendel’s mom is Beowulf’s counterpart. Without them, there wouldn’t be a movie. 2nd, Robert Zemeckis said Angelina is the only actor he envisioned who could have played Grendel’s mom the way he wanted - absolutely no one else.

Third the entertainment media’s interest was first & foremost on Angelina. She was the one people wanted to interview, and she worked hard doing all the press work & premieres. I can guarantee a lot of the 75% male audience’s #1 or #2 reason for going was Angelina.

even i would like to see a little naked animated angelina! *lol* i also love her voice, there.
she’s not a box office poison. c’mon! she made so many box office movies. an actor or actress doesn’t always have to make a box office movie.
anybody can tell me, is this movie save enough for 5 year old girl? cuz i’d like to bring my daughter to see it.

  • ligaya
    Nov 21, 2007 at 12:10 pm

Vivabrangelina, IMO, Beowulf (a hard PG-13)wouldn’t be appropriate for a 5 y.o. Even though it’s animated, it’s still very bloody and gory, people are dismembered and thrown at the audience, the sea monsters/Grendel/dragon are very scary & fierce. It’s very adult, harsh and dark, albeit with comic moments. It’s definitely not a fairy tale or comedy. Your daughter might end up having nightmares if she sees it.

Vivabrangelina, my complete answer is under moderation :-) . Beowulf is PG-13, IMO it’s not appropriate for a 5 y.o.

    Nov 21, 2007 at 8:55 pm

No it’s not appropriate for a 5 year old, although when we went there were children under 10 there. There’s a lot of violence, then the nudity, I think that’s why Angie was surprised it only got PG-13 here and 12 at home.

    thanks ligaya!
actually i finally took my daughter to see it! and as you can guess, at the first 10 minute i and my husband were busy covering up her eyes with our hands, and the next 5 or 7 minutes she cried to get out! *lol* my husband finally took her out of the theatre meanwhile i stayed. what a mother, rite? *lol* i wanted to see my angelina and ray winstone looked kind a hot! hahaha. my mistake. now i can totally understand why angie doesn’t want her kids to see this movie. and also why she was shy being animated THAT way. but i really love her accent! good movie anyway.

    Variety, By Dave McNary:

    TOP STORY
    ‘Beowulf’ wins overseas box office

The animated re-telling of the epic poem, handled by Warner Bros. internationally, has cumed $48.5 million overseas for a combined worldwide total of $105 million. With little competition on the action front until “I Am Legend” opens in mid-December, “Beowulf” should remain a decent draw for several more weeks with openings next frame in Australia, Brazil and Japan.

“Beowulf” easily conquered the foreign box office, dominating the weekend with $26 million at 5,400 playdates in 43 markets for its second straight international victory.

“Beowulf,” which more than doubled its foreign run, scored best in its Russian launch with a first-place $4.3 million, 20% better than “Van Helsing.”

In a French frame held down by a public transport strike, “Beowulf” put the bite on $2 million in its launch. It won in Mexico with a $1.9 million opening, stayed in first in South Korea with $1.4 million.
