Brad and Angelina in Atlas Shrugged

by Christina on April 29th, 2006

Atlas ShruggedAccording to Variety, Brad and Angelina are possibly going to star in the film adaptation of Ayn Rand’s classic, Atlas Shrugged. I have never read this book, but the background on it can be found in the Variety article, and it has had quite an interesting history.

Lionsgate has picked up worldwide distribution rights to “Atlas Shrugged” from Howard and Karen Baldwin (”Ray”), who will produce with John Aglialoro.

As for stars, book provides an ideal role for an actress in lead character Dagny Taggart, so it’s not a stretch to assume Rand enthusiast Angelina Jolie’s name has been brought up. Brad Pitt, also a fan, is rumored to be among the names suggested for lead male character John Galt.

Have any of you all read this (or all of you and I am the only dip who hasn’t)??

Spelling her name “Anne” was such a dead giveaway. After that, didn’t think you were a big fan.

LOL ok, yeah, I am a dip, like I said. Changing that now… ;)

Read it twice, very good book, but Rand is very philisophical in her books too. So if you decide to tackle it be warned of that. It isn’t out in your face philosophy, but it is weaved into the story.

I can see Angelina playing the main female character, Dominque. I’m not sure of Brad as the main male character if that is who they want him to play. That would be Rourke (might have spelled that wrong).

I did find myself pondering after reading it for a second time if a movie could do the book justice. It would have to be done very well and be a long movie.

Ok, duuhh, I was thinking the fountainhead, also by Rand. I’m in the process of reading Atlas Shurgged, but not done with it. My bad. Apparently I’m a dip too.

Please, please don’ make this movie. It’s just such a heavy story that I don’t think it would be successful (critics-wise or boxoffice-wise). I have visions of a flop that would rival that of Cleopatra. But knowing them, they would do it just for the challenge of it all. I hope they do Fountainhead instead.

I’ve read the book and was so excited to see that they might take the two lead roles. The love story and the intrigue in the novel will make a “to-die-for” movie if they get the right director and screenplay writer. I soooooo hope it’s true!

Awesome! Brangelina would be divine in Atlas Shrugged. The reading is pretty tough sledding - it seems to go on forever in some places; but a movie would shorten it up and be absofrickingly awesome!

another movie for brangelina? hhmm… i’m afraid it will flop… or people will think it’s gonna be another gigli. i never read the book tho’. i’m a dip too. =D

Hi again. I’m tired, but I just had to post about the possibility of Brad and Angelina appearing in ATLAS SHRUGGED. It is one of my favourite books. I even got the 30th Anniversary hardback copy many years ago.

Brad would make a great John Galt, and as for Angelina, she would bring Dagny Taggart to life in a most vivid way. I also see her in The Fountainhead, which was mentioned above. Let’s just say I loved Ayn Rand’s writing, and with the way I feel about Brad and Angelina, it would just be perfect.

Also, Angelina’s interview with Anne Curry was so good, I have watched it several times already. I was lucky enough to get it all on tape.

I’m so glad someone else thinks it drags at places. I’m on my second attempt to read the book and am having much trouble again. I got the chapter 10 last time, The John Galt Line, and couldn’t finish that chapter…it was dull. I so hope if I get past it this time that the book gets better or I won’t be able to finish it. Although I’m stubborn and probably will anyway.

    Anhriette,

You were lucky to get the interview taped. I watched the one on The Today show, which sucked cause it was maybe 10 mins. I tape Extreme Home Makeover so didn’t get to see the dateline one. I do wish I had though.

    Angela,

Yes, ATLAS SHRUGGED is very rough, tough, painstakingly slow reading, but it is a great book. Believe it or not, I have actually read it twice.

Ayn Rand has a habit of writing her opinions into her novels, and when John Galt, or Howard Roark, from THE FOUNTAINHEAD, give their opinions, it is actually hers.

I would love to see Brad Pitt as Roark also, especially when he falls in love with (oh, no, I can’t remember her name in the book. Shame on me.) She was played by Patricia Neal, and Angelina would outdo even the great Patricia. I have read all of the Robert Ludlum books, and I can think of several that Brad and Angelina would be perfect in, but ATLAS SHRUGGED is, by far, the very best.

I loved watching Angelina giggle in that interview. Her eyes lit up, and she seemed so very happy, yet very intense in her concerns for the children and making sure they get an education.

In my opinion, both Brad and Angelina are just as committed to their beliefs in helping others. I only hope that Brad can make his dream come true and help those whose homes were destroyed in Louisiana rebuild their futures.

Anhri and friends, I just had to say one more time after reading your comments that I agree with all who think Angelina and Brad would be great for the lead roles in Atlas Shrugged. It is also one of my favorite books and I read all of Ayn Rand’s books back in the sixties. Did you see the story of her life (can’t remember the name of the movie) in which Eric Stoltz starred? He was Nathaniel Branden who established her objectivist school in New York. Anyway, a hard book or a long book creates a challenge but with the right screenwriter and director, I think “Atlas” would make a great movie and Angelina a fabulous Dagny. I’ve always wanted someone to make it into a movie and to think. . .it might happen and it might star my two favorite movie actors!
I also hope Brad’s dream for New Orleans can come true. I admire them both for all the hard work they do and I can’t wait for that gorgeous baby to get here!
P.S. Is Dominique the name you were trying to think of?

  • Anhriette
    May 2, 2006 at 8:49 pm

    JLS,

Dominique it is! I can’t believe I didn’t remember it. I loved the book and the movie with Gary Cooper as Howard Roark and Patricia Neal as Dominique. Like you, I have read most of Ayn Rand’s movies, and I did read a book about all her ideology, and what she believed would make this world better.

Just to think that Brad Pitt might play John Galt is very exciting. And Angelina as Dagny, or perhaps even Dominique, and Brad as Roark is perfect. Maybe we should all pool our money and become producers. I’ve got at least $1.00 to contribute.

BTW, nice hearing from you again, and the wedding was beautiful.

Dip? Well, I guess Nip Anhri sounds okay! A little on the “dizzy dame” side, but I are glad I am not be a dip!

BTW, I don’t know if I should post here or not, but I just read something that bothered me a little.

Does anyone know if Brad has flown back to the US to talk to Zahara’s pediatrician because she seems to be suffering from rickets? I am not making this up, and I certainly don’t want to start any rumours, but it was on some site. I will try to find it again tomorrow and post again. The article also stated that if living in Africa was a danger to little Zahara, Angelina would immediately return to the states, although it might be difficult.

    Has anyone else read this?

    Anhriette,

I picked up the book last night, think it was a month or so since I’ve read it, and was on chapter 7 so I’m working through finishing it. I figured out when I picked it up I need to pace myself so I can enjoy it more. The next chapter is 8, The John Galt Line, and I’ve never gotten further that it. I can truely say that the first time attempting to read Atlas I never got to John Galt. I’m just annoyed at everyone asking “Who is John Galt?” I haven’t met him and don’t know anything about him, so hearing you all talk I’m anxious to meet him in the story. :)

I do see Angelina as Dagney cause she is good in strong roles, but I don’t think she has gotten a really good role like that in a while, she was great in Girl Interrupted (I think that was my favorite role of hers and when I became a big fan.)

As for The Fountainhead, I need to check out the version that is out there, but do believe Brangelina would be awesome in a remake of it.

Anhri, I also read that article about Zahara having rickets and that there is a possibility they might have to come back to the States to have the baby. In the article I read (can’t remember where either) it said rickets affects the immune system and makes the person more susceptible to disease. . .therefore, Africa might not be the best place for her to be. After the one article, I never saw another thing written about it. . .maybe someone else will have read more somewhere.

The article about Zahara’s health is: Should Angelina be keeping her baby in Namibia? from EntertainmentWise.com—since I’m a dip(?):)I don’t know how to paste the article here for everyone to read. I found it on Google, page 7 or 8.

    Angela,

Reading a 1,000 plus page book, and you really do have to remember a lot, but it is always worth it, especially a book such a ATLAS SHRUGGED.

BTW, I WROTE a book that was about 1,200 pages long several years ago. I have written four novels, and do a lot of short stories, so believe me, the writer will appreciate it.

Now, let’s hope that the deal with Brangelina and the producers of ATLAS SHRUGGED will be solidified quickly.

Hi, JLS. Did you ever get my last “novel” email right before I quit answering all my email?

I still have to read this book. Doug Limon said in the M/M/Smith documentary that Brad and Angie are like Gable and Lombard when he watched the first dance scene (Bogota dance)on the uncut version of the M/M Smith dvd that I watch all the time. It seems to me that this novel is only for a certain audience. If this becomes a film, the success depends upon how it is marketed. It sure is not meant to be a blockbuster for a younger audience.

By the way, I just saw on E-news last night (9/21/06) that Angie signed up officially for Atlas Shrugged. Brad did not confirm yet.

Hmmm…interesting….I read Atlas Shrugged and loved it. It was hard read and 1,000 pages to boot. I think I read three other books while reading this one. Now I am reading Fountainhead and a couple of others. I totally cannot see Angelina being an Ayn Rand enthusiast. I can see even less of Brad Pitt being John Galt. Their real life politics is completely opposite of Ayn Rand’s philisophy, so I cannot see them emersing themselves into the roles. Francisco Aconcia is my guy in my book. Wonder who would play him.

  • Robyn
    Dec 1, 2006 at 12:57 am

I’ve also read those two novels, and they are some of my favorites. I have to disagree though on the politics. Ayn Rand was quite progressive, and these two are certainly that.

  • Anhriette
    Dec 1, 2006 at 12:59 pm

    Teri,

I wondered when someone was going to mention the vast differences of political opinions between Rand and Jolie-Pitt. I see it, yet at the same time, I also can see Angelina really getting into a role like this one. Just trying to understand the philosophical differences in the humanaritian aspect is what will be a challenge for Angelina. However, I think that she will excel in the role and I also hope that Brad Pitt signs up.

I think I would much rather see them in The Fountainhead because I absolutely love that move. Perhaps it was because Gary Cooper was one of my all time favourites and just seeing his tall body standing there in court when he gives his very long speech is enough to make me want to see it again, this time with Brad Pitt. I would love to see what he can do with this character and how he, too, will excel in the role.

There is no way that these two could be any of the heros in Atlas Shrugged.I have read this book three times and it is one of my absolute favorites.I hope that liberal hollywood never tries to make this most awesome book into a crap movie. They will only do it an huge injustice.

    Hello,
This is old news. Brad will not be in Atlas Shrugged as John Galt. However, he will be a co-producer with Lions Gate. As far as Mr. & Mrs. Smith, it was number one in the box office for 3 weeks. What is the definition of success might be different for some people. It was also number one in Japan and who knows in the Philippines too and other countries.

Thanks Lucy and Cristine. Lovin’ it!

It’s amazing that when facts are brought forward the haters either disappear or become unreasonable in their argument!

Brad has received a lot critical acclaim for his work as an actor and producer. Most recent being Babel ($130m worldwide-Budget $19-25m); Departed (>100m US alone).

Angie has GG, SAG’s, Oscar. Critical acclaim for TGS, AMH recently.

So what is your argument *Bruisin Raincloud?* Acting ability, celebrity or you just don’t like them? Being liberal doesn’t make you incapable, my dear. ;)

I think that Atlas Shrugged would make a great movie. What I can’t figure out is this- I am halfway through the book, and John Galt is more of an abstract idea than an actual character. I am thinking Brad Pitt would be more likely to play Hank Rearden.

It would do much better than Mr. and Mrs. Smith-after all, this would be a movie based on a book. Not a movie made just to entertain/make $.

What suprises me is that Brad and Angelina actually like this book. (I’m shocked that when any celebs read anything other than what is written about them!) Maybe there are celebrities who are intelligent after all!
