Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Syria

October 2, 2009 by Sherry

Sometimes it seems like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie never fail to surprise people. While we all thought they were relaxing at their home in the South of France it turns out that the Jolie-Pitt couple were in Syria for a UNHCR mission.

Angelina has been to Damascus, Syria before to visit with Iraqi refugees and she was there again on Friday to plead that the world not forget about them. The UNHCR article explains that while there’s a certain improvement to the sense of security in Iraq there are still hundreds of thousands of refugees who feel that they can not return home.

As always, when the news stops focusing on a country so much, people tend to forget about the refugees who come from that country and Angelina wants to make sure that doesn’t happen. She spoke about the current refugee situation and said:

“Most Iraqi refugees cannot return to Iraq in view of the severe trauma they experienced there, the uncertainty linked to the coming Iraqi elections, the security issues and the lack of basic services. They will, therefore, be in need of continued support from the international community.”

Both Brad and Angelina visited the homes of two Iraqi families living in Syria to hear their stories. One family just fled their homeland this summer after their son was abducted twice and the wife once. The wife’s story is terrible and terrifying: “I was assaulted every day for 13 days by up to 10 men. I wanted to kill myself and the only reason I decided not to go ahead is because of my children.” The abductions totaled $65,000 in ransom payments and then they ran.

Although the Iraqi refugees have been luckier than others in that Syria has proven to be a welcoming country, it’s obviously difficult to be forced out of your own home and to be displaced for unknown periods of time. The other family with whom Brad and Angelina spent time include a mother, a father, and five children under the age of seven, with the entire family living in a tiny one-room basement apartment with just a tiny window; the only things they currently own have been provided by relief efforts.

Angelina spoke out saying that due to the trauma these refugees have faced, from abductions to torture, and more, most have still not recovered and she insisted that, “until other solutions are found, or these refugees are able to go home, it is essential that the international community help UNHCR to provide financial and food support so that they can survive. They don’t have the right to work, so they have no way of surviving without our help.”

It’s such a difficult thing to imagine, to be able to understand how refugees are forced to live, through no fault of their own. I’m so grateful that we have someone like Angelina Jolie as the UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador to help draw attention to the people who need it most.

Read the rest of the article over here. It includes a photo of Angelina talking with the woman who had been abducted as well as an absolutely beautiful photo of Brad spending time with some refugee children.

You can also see two photos of Brad and Angelina walking in Damascus – one is here and the other is here.

The tabloids can have their fun; the real truth is that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are too busy doing good things for people to care at all.

Nice to read this sort of thing instead :)
During hte last month, there have been so many catastrophies happening, both natural as well as man-made, that one hardly has time to keep up with everything going on. Griefs…

Yoco —> You learn to time your sleep. As well as sleeping on the plane. Practice makes perfect… ;)

(Just by the by; Love that flowing, white dress…!)

Angie and Brad are the best when it comes to international issues. Love this and love them!

This week at my college’s pre-health honors club meeting a guest lecturer came in to represent the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The IRC spends the least percentage of donations on advertisement of any major organization and I was really interested in what she had to say. But what made me really want to be involved was when she mentioned Brad and Angelina!

I was so surprised and had no idea that they donated and supported the IRC. It made me proud to be a fan when the representative started showing pictures and spoke volumes of praise about two people who cared about something that meant a lot to her.

Just wanted to share that to further show how compassionate Brad and Angelina are.

  11. sunny says:

Ashley, thank you for your sharing your experience.

Angie has been involved in IRC’s work since she became a goodwill ambassador for UNHCR . The IRC has for many years been UNHCR’s largest NGO partner.

Last year when IRC announced that Jolie-Pitt Foundation donated $1 million for Iraq and US children whose parents were killed by Iraq War that organization also mentioned Jolie-Pitt donated more than $ 300,000 in 2007.

They looked so sweet together in that one picture. He was leading the way and Angie was following like an angel. Thanks for the link.

  18. irma says:

That’s one reason why I am a fan of Brad & Angie, they care about people, they take risk for others, they are the best role models in HW today. What a better world it will be if all the people in HW will follow their leads.God bless them.
To all the fans, my family back home in the Philippines are all ok.I was able to talk to them last night & will call them again later. We are sending them some necessities since they lost most of their furnitures, clothes & until now they still don’t have electricity. They are cleaning & getting back to normal slowly but surely. Iam so relieved. Thank God.

Julia- I didn’t notice that…but I’m not a bit surprised. The media does that all the time. I think they maybe just don’t know quite how to refer to Angie and Brad now that they’ve been together for four plus years and have six kids (I mean, “boyfriend and girlfriend” just doesn’t seem “deep” enough, if you know what I mean, to refer to their relationship).

I’m guessing that some media outlets also just plain forget that they aren’t married…since they basically are married in all senses of the word except for the legal aspect. :)

Anyway, I wonder if they brought any of the kids with them on this trip?

I just love this couple! They are not giving a rat´s a** about what the rags say but continue their lives as usual. The pics of these two are just beautiful. It just proves that they love to help those people in need. Angie and Brad both are great humanitarians and in these pics it´s easy to see. Brad´s wole face is lit up when he plays with those children. He´s a perfect dad and is very fatherly with these children too. That pic in which Brad kind of leads the way and Angie follows him is just beautiful. These two are so meant to be together. For Angie this goodwill ambassador work isn´t a publicity stunt. She is doing it because she – just like Brad – truly wants to help those people who don´t have much. Those two have big hearts and I really salute them. They both should be awarded for their charity work. Hopefully one of their children – or all of them – will continue their parents´ charity work. God bless the JPs 4ever!

  22. Sarah says:

Thank God that Angelina is bringing attention to those women’s experiences of abuse. Rape and gang rape is a human rights violation.

  23. June says:

My 2 cents worth – Circumstances may not permitted them to work in another movie together, but by supporting each other in this way, to me is “working” together. I love to see them this way, either at the red carpet, shopping with kids, involve in other project (eg the previous W magazine). They really fit each other in many different levels. It is obvious that are compassionate people, love children very much & able to relate with people from all walks of life.
Thank you Sherry & all fans who share links/comments with the rest of us.Peace.

Brad and Angie you are truly geniune people who would do the best they can to remember and make the poor people feel they are also important and a human being. Nobody is perfect and whatever the TABLOIDS say, just stick together and you are wonderful people of try to make the best of it. You are our inspiration as we may wanted to do what you are doing but we are uncapable to do so you feel our heart joy and hope. Brad please dont leave angie you are really LUCKY to have her as a partner and your children wonderful and you are bringing them to be good people in the future. Angie you are truly one in a million. We will always keep you in our prayers to have a long miles to run and healthy years with so many blessings. You have truly given and showed us HOPE. Thank you for your contributions. Nobody is perfect but angie you are always truthful and honest for who you are and that is an inspiration. God Bless and thank you for that.

  40. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

The twins are so cute….I agree with emma that, from what we can see of her, it’s Viv that looks more like Shiloh. I can certainly see Shiloh in Knox, but, to me, he actually looks quite a bit different than Shi did at the same age. In fact, if this makes any sense at all, he actually kind of reminds of Britney Spears’ sons when they were his age!

Now here’s hoping that we’ll see a good photo of Viv’s face soon! :)

  41. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

It also appears that Viv does NOT have pierced ears, which convinces me even more that those rumored pictures on JJB awhile back really did not exist. I’m glad, because that means no one stole private photos of them (rumors were that someone on JJB had somehow obtained pictures of Knox and Viv in the J-Ps LA house around their first birthday)! :)

nice to meet that amazing couple walking in the oldest city of the world..
syrian really love Brad and Angelina

    welcome all to syria

  43. josephine says:

angelina looks so tired in this picture. my heart goes out to her. if she wasn’t a real beauty, this picture will look scary. but i think her inner goodness shines through. i cannot imagine doing half the things she does and at the same time raising six children under the age of 10. what a remarkable person.

  44. luna says:

This photo wasn’t taken in Syria it’s somewhere in Africa i don’t know the reason of publishing this photo instead of the real one, and yes they are the best.

  45. Sherry says:

Luna – Right under the photo I wrote very clearly that it was taken in Kenya. At the time that I posted this story I didn’t have access to the photos of Angelina in Syria. I do have access to several of them now and will have them up shortly in a new post, but I like to put a related photo when possible instead of just plain text.

  46. Fact & Fun says:

They both are my favorite I have watched all the movies of both great actors thanks for sharing this pic :)
