Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie set up health center

by Sherry on September 14th, 2008

Warner Bros. Premiere of

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have donated approximately $2 million to set up a medical center in Ethiopia. The center will help a great deal of people who need medical attention, including children who are dealing with HIV, AIDS, and tuberculosis, three major concerns in Ethiopia.

Previously, Brad and Angelina established the Maddox Chivan Children’s Center in Cambodia, and they’re naming the new center after another one of the Jolie-Pitt kids. The medical center in Ethiopia is to be named after Zahara Jolie-Pitt, who was born in the country.

Brad has already said he hopes Zahara will have an interest in the center later in life: “It is our hope when Zahara is older, she will take responsibility of the clinic and continue its mission.” Some people have voiced the opinion that it’s strange or unfair to expect that Zahara will want anything to do with the clinic just because her parents want her to. To that, I can only be confused. He didn’t say that they have opened it with the strict intention that she MUST take it over when she grows up - he said he HOPES she will want to be responsible for it. And why not? Brad and Angelina do so much to help other people, it’s certainly logical that they would hope that all of their children will grow up to also reach out to those in need. And both of them are perfect examples that their kids can be whatever they want to be, career-wise, and still have the time, energy, and desire to do charity work.

Thanks sherry, angie and brad have high expectations for their children, not unlike many parents who want their children to succeed in life, i commend brad and angie for starting the clinic and for expecting high standards from their children.

Kudos to Angelina and Brad (and others like them – rich, famous, and ordinary) who step in to fill an urgent need without needing to be prompted.

As the JPs made clear, they *HOPE* Zahara will take up their cause, they’re not going to force her to be a concerned global citizen if she doesn’t want to.

I just can’t get my head wrapped around the nattering naysayers’ objections. What are they objecting to: that millions of people’s lives can be saved? That these children and adults have skins of color? Would they feel better if only white Americans got helped? How do these people sitting in their easy chairs contributing absolutely nothing have the gall to object to how anyone donates their money? It’s very common, by wealthy and ordinary people alike, to contribute to building schools, playgrounds, medical/arts/sports centers, children’s and senior centers, in the name of a family member, a beloved friend, an esteemed mentor and leader, etc.

And excuse me, but since when did adult parents abdicate their responsibilities to raise, teach and guide their children and teenagers? Since when do human beings who don’t have the capacity to judge and make decisions call the shots? This seems totally backwards and upside down to me. What – parents are going to forecast the future before they do anything with their kids? Will adults sue their parents for not being perfect and not putting them in the best private schools, not dressing them in the trendiest designer clothes, giving them the coolest car, plastic surgery and birthday parties like the kids of the rich & famous?

    Thanks Sherry.

This is why many people are jealous of them and some of them hate them.because they walk the walk. Angie just told in People’s issue for twin that they are going to build a hospital in the name of Zahara, and here they are two months later with the money they had promised to build the hospital with. God give you more to do more.

Don’t worry Sherry! no matter what they do or what they say, some people are born to make drama out of nothing, sad but this life.they put some words in their mouth they they never told so,let alone changing their words for their own benefit.

I commend Angelina and Brad for all the charitable work that they are doing. Ethiopia is a country struggling with extreme poverty and where the number of people suffering from diseases like HIV, AIDS and TB are rising, especially children. What this medical center will do is give those children a chance to be cured live a fairly normal life.

Thank you Sherry for all the work you doing for this site!

From 2005 Angie has been supporting financially Dr.Jane Aronson’s pediatrics clinic in Ethiopia for HIV/Aids treatment. Jolie-Pitt Foundation now adds education and social services besides medical treatment. Like their projects in Cambodia this will be a long-range lifework for them. Many suffering children in Ethiopia will receive benefit from this project.

Think it is wonderful how they stay focused on helping others and hope that their children will be involved also. I am sure in the future they will do something for Vietnam for Pax. I think they will involve the children in their visiting their homelands and as they grow they will want to be involved. It is so nice how they are setting up the stage. It will be interesting to see what they set up for Shiloh, Viv and Knox. I find nothing wrong with Brad’s statement. It is so unordinary for people to make the negative comments about what a child will do later in life. Can’t understand all the negative comments. What has happen to people, instead of praising what they are doing, they come with the negative. I say “Bravo” to the Jolie-Pitts.

I along with all of the other commenters can not understand why this couple is put down all the time. Guess none of us will ever get it. This couple is leading their children by example. Children are like sponges and they will soak up all of their parents good intentions. More than likely they will all want to be involved. Look at the Kennedy children, most of them are involved with good works. For me it has gone past the movie star bit, now I just think of them as two wonderful people who care for others. The money they make starring in these movies is what enables them to do so much good.

Check out justjared. There is a new thread about Brad/Angie making the Guinness Book of World Records…

Also BAR is #1 at the Box Office!!! I was surprised it beat out the Tyler Perry movie. But it did. Great News. The movie made about 20 million. That is really good considering that the weekends after the summer releases are usually slow, and the movie was rated R. I am so glad for Brad and the other cast and the Coens. I think next week may be better once word of mouth get out. I will be going to see again.

Some people may think that what they are giving away to charity is nothing compared to how much money they make, but the fact that they do give, not just money but time and effort, I think is proof that these are really good people. I’m glad they’re teaching their children about the world and its problems and how they can help be part of the solution. Some things can never be fully resolved, but every little thing, every little step, can make a difference.

WOW !!!! The Guinness Book of World Record for the Jolie-Pitts.Congratulations to the both of them.I am hoping that one day,Angelina will decide it is finally time to carry their childrens last name. Jolie-Pitt. Sounds beautiful.” ANGELINA JOLIE-PITT-Mrs. Bradley Pitt

And won’t it be a great day when Brad finally decides to add Jolie to his name! Mr. Angelina Jolie!

My husband and I combined both of our last names, like JOLIE-PITT. Actually it’s a common tradition among people of Hispanic/Latino descent - can’t remember if the mom’s last name or the dad’s last name comes first, but it’s something like “dad’s last name y mom’s last name.”

Ligaya, I can answer the name thing: when I lived in Puerto Rico it amazed me that the women didn’t use their husbands names. As an example: Lily Guzman Acvedo Guzman is the fathers name, Acvedo is the mothers name and husbands name not used at all.
