Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie both thrilled over Golden Globe nods (Discussion Thread)
December 12, 2008 by Sherry
According to Entertainment Tonight, Angelina Jolie is honored to be nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Changeling. She is quoted as saying:
“I am honored to be nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press in a category with so many extraordinary women. What an amazing experience, having the opportunity to work with Clint Eastwood on a film I care so deeply about.”

Meanwhile, Brad Pitt is equally pleased with his nomination and those of his movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, saying:
“I am pleased to be nominated for this award and would like to also congratulate David [Fincher], Eric [Roth] and Alexandre [Desplat] on their nominations. We’re all very proud of the film and thankful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing our work.”
Here’s a discussion topic to tide us over for the upcoming weekend: Who, in your opinion, is the biggest competition for each of them in the best actor/best actress categories?
Even though Meryl Streep is a world class icon in the acting world, I think that Angelina’s biggest competition is actually Anne Hathaway – to me, she is the one to beat.
Meanwhile, it’s hard for me to guess the biggest source of competition for Brad. Although I’m not personally too crazy about him, I think Leonardo DiCaprio could be the one to beat, but Sean Penn could be as well.
What are your thoughts?

I am a big fan of Leonardo, but I think it will be a Sean Penn win. Mickey Rourke has been getting critical raves, so this could be a comeback win for him. My female choice goes to Kristin Scott Thomas, she was mesmerizing in I Have Loved You For so Long. I loved AJ in Changeling, but the competition is pretty fierce.
Just another quick comment….Brad and Angelina certainly were deserving of the nominations, and lucky for all of us, because it will mean a red carpet appearance.
I’m not sure which category ect he’s nominated in but I really think Heath Ledger will win his category.
Also it’s hard for me to have an opinion on this subject because I HAVN’T GOTTEN TO SEE THE MOVIES!!!
I loved the quote in the one article someone posted where Brad said he had a friend that worked at a hospice and his friend said when people are dying they don’t mention their awards or accomplishments – they talk about their regrets and ones they love
What great insight
I agree with you Sherry, but Anne and Sean are my most concern to beat. Which the pop 8 is going Sean Penn have more e
Biggest competition? Hmmm…if Leo beats out Brad, I won’t be very happy. Sure, he’s hot, but I don’t think his acting is all that great – he acts the same in EVERY MOVIE that I’ve ever seen him in (except Titanic – THAT was classic).
By the way, in case I haven’t told you yet (ha) – giveaway going on over at my site!
i think kate winslet has a big chance of winning too but i haven’t seen anne’s movie yet so i can’t compare. and as for the best actor, it’s hard to choose, all of them are deserving.
let’s just keep our fingers crossed that both or one of them will bring home the bacon.
congrats brad and angie! even if they’ll maybe not win, we’ll have a great red carpet moment!
have a nice week end everybody!!!!!! i make my drive license on monday, i’m scared!
oh, goodluck melodie. you can do it.
Melodie, good luck with your driving test. That is such a big day in ones life. As for who will win I having been hearing and reading a lot about Anne and Sean being the winners. I saw Changeling and of course I thought it was great and I plan on seeing CCBB, so I would hope for one or both to win. And Brad’s remark about what is really important in our lives is very true. I will be 70 next year and the way I think now is so different than even 10 years ago.
good luck melodie, you can do it
Good luck Melodie……you’ll make history today!!
Mary Ann congrats to you on 70!!! I’m 35 so hard to imagine life twice as long. In that note can’t wait to see CCOBB the buzz about it is so very good. Lots calling it an EPIC, that sounds promising. I have never gone to see a movie for Christmas but that may be my Christmas present to myself.
Since they are nominated so much though – there will be lots of pics of Brad and Angie and video too.
I have seen Changeling and Angie did a superb job…but I am not sure if she is even going to be nominated, because the film received mixed reviews. …They nominated Cate Blanchett last year for a film that was worst received than Changeling, and Angie deserved the nomination….and this year, most reviews are praising Blanchett. I believe that the nominations should go to whoever deserves it better but I would go nuts if they nominate Blanchett over Angie, seriously. Angie did a great job and I think she should at least get a nomination. If you go to the users review at Yahoo Movies the facebook and IMDB almost everyone is raving about her performance. I hope that more people go to see Changeling now that Angie has been nominated to the Globes.
The Best Actress race is pretty crowded…this year you have Melissa Leo (who has won some critics and festival awards for her movie Frozen River) Anne Hatthaway (Rachel Getting Married) Sally Hawkins (Happy go Lucky, a film that has received critics awards already and was raved by many as performance of the year) Kristen Scott Thomas (I’ve loved you so long, won some awards and it is nominated for the Globe already) Meryl Streep (always gets nominated, so many critics are saying she is a lock for a Best actress nomination, even though the film received mixed reviews just as Changeling) and Kate Winslet (who has 2 films coming out, the Reader (supporting category) and Revolutionary Road (for best actress category)…Last year, the academy nominated lots of foreign actors and those actors that won, were all foreign…I doubt that happens again, especially since the OSCARS had the lowest ratings in history..
I am very suspicious of the negative reviews on Changeling, as most of them were bringing up Angie’s personal life and criticizing Angie’s lips and saying that her beauty got in the way of her performance. OSCAR or not it was an amazing film.
I hope Brad gets nominated too, but I am not too positive, because again, the competition is fierce this year. You have Sean Penn, Frank Langella, Clint Eastwood, Richard Jenkins, Leonardo Di Caprio…these are the front runners according to critics, and already Sean Penn has won critics awards. I would hate it if TCCBB gets all nominations except for lead actor..(this happened to Joseph Fiennes in Shakespeare in Love).
If the Brange gets nominated or at least one of them then they will go. But if they don’t, they won’t go just like last year. I am already getting angry at the thought of them not being nominated, but I have a feeling that they will….I have a feeling that maybe the OSCARS want to make it up for not nominating them last year…Most of the reviews for Benjamin Button have been great, and Changeling has done really well at the BO for a film of its kind, it is an Eastwood film, she was snubbed last year, she has accumulated over 1 billion in box office revenues this year (not that this matters, but still). Lets just wait and see…if they get nominated for SAGS, I think they have a higher chance for OSCARS then.
I’ll be under modification because I am using a new browser. Anyway, I think the foreign press love Brad and Angie too much not to vote them up for a Jolie-Pitt Best Actor Sweep. Plus they are the first award and want to set the tone. Can you imagine their ratings …
But if Angie, didn’t win, Anne Hathaway all the way. I don’t think she is so great but she did a blockbuster and a critically acclaimed and her boyfriend got busted trying to sell papal suits — sympathy vote.
I think this is Brad’s year. Personally I would have given it to him for Troy, but that’s just me!
Sherry,
I am biased on this note because I am not planning to see the competition. I will just write what I read. James McAvoy said in an interview, Anne H. should win. May be because he is in the movie with her? Lainey Gossip wants “Slumdog Millionaire” and I think Meryl. She is really hot and cold with our Brangie. I still wish Brad or Angie wins although I woudn’t be surprise if Sean or Rourke gets it. I don’t know about Leo, he has been nominated many times, so did Kate. So there goes my take on this. I am not even going to give the other movies any income from me, just Brad’s movie on Christmas Day.
I want to share a wonderful post by T&L (from JJ): “…..that story about the NYT investigating itself got me thinking – every time someone writes something negative, derogatory about Angelina they always end up w/ egg in their face – sooner or later – without Angelina having to do anything but sit and relax. I think she has a big guardian angel protecting her.”
And this is my comment:
That’s what I am also thinking.
Those people and publications who try to bring Angie down by writing negative and unfounded stories about her, more often than not get into trouble, either their circulation is getting less and less or they are receiving negative reactions from the public. It’s called BACKLASH. The power of strong public opinion should never be underestimated. Besides, the person these very mean people try to destroy is Angie who in the first place is a very respected figure around the world. Angie is very credible and has formed good associations with very important people and ordinary ones, so anything bad they say about her is easily put in the garbage can. Also, a lot of people come to her defense even though she doesn’t know them personally. People just deemed it necessary to defend her (in blogs, e-mails, sites, letters etc or stopping regular subscriptions) because they can clearly see the unfair treatment they are giving her. People who have no hidden agenda can really distinguish facts from rumors. People know this because they are not stupid that these publications think they are. It’s the initiative of strangers to do something about it. And that is very sweet. I think she has not only one but many guardian angels on her side. Good deeds results to good Karma. Negative ones is to BAD Karma. It’s simple as that. And we know who is getting the good blessings these days. Go figure
I truly wish that at least one of them (Brad or Angie) would win GG. I haven´t seen either of their movies (Changeling or TCCOBB) because they haven´t opened in my country yet. But judged by the trailers I´ve seen they both are very good movies and I´m looking forward to seeing them. Maybe Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet will win but like I said I´m keeping my fingers crossed so that Brangie will win. At least it´ll be great to see them on the red carpet. Hopefully this gorgeous couple will sit next to each other.
Well, I’d bet on Sean Penn. I think Hollywood believes Sean has been under-honored over the years for all his great work in film. He won a long overdue Oscar for “Mystic River,” and got a standing ovation for that very reason. He has had an amazing career and is, IMHO, the greatest actor of his generation.
But I think Angie could be the odds-on favorite for best actress, because the Hollywood Foreign Press adores her and also wants to acknowledge her humanitarian work. Meryl Streep has already won a lot of awards in this second phase of her career. Unfortunately, I failed to see Changeling on the big screen (just too busy lately, although I’m treating myself with Twilight tomorrow) so I can’t comment on Angie’s performance.
I do hope Brad snags an Oscar one day so the loving couple can have a his-and-hers set.
Good luck, Melodie, I’m sure you can do it! You remind me I need to renew my license.
Anyone interested in the HFPA, the organization behind the Golden Globes, can check out these couple of articles. People in the industry like to look down on the HFPA, but it’s risen in respect over the years and the GG is 2nd only to the Oscars. So take these articles with a grain of salt.

New Sunday Herald Sun (AUS) Cover Interview: The Angelina Jolie Effect. (Didn’t like their magazine title too much “Easy Virtue: Angelina’s Journey from Wild Child to Mother Superior”)

Excerpts –
“Neither of us is allowed all the kids at once, because the other one gets lonely.” Being a mum clearly suits her; she tells cute stories about her kids: “You hear them giggling and scrambling and making plans together in the middle of the night.” And the excuses they make about not going to bed: “Our seven-year-old, Mad, writes letters now. He’ll write these really long, extended letters that he’ll slip under our door. “‘Hi Mum and Dad, I don’t want you to be mad, I’m just walking around. I can’t sleep. I hope it’s OK. If you feel like visiting me’ It just goes on and on.” She rolls her eyes. “We’re so thrilled he’s using his language and writing letters, so we write in reply.”
“We used to have date nights – now we have date hours,” she laughs.
Truth, it seems, is Jolie’s shield. She once told a Vogue journalist, “You can ask me anything.” These days, I wonder if she still feels so free. “I answer every question honestly, or I don’t answer at all, because I have to remain open, for myself. But I’m more aware of a leading question looking for something trashy, or somebody who isn’t going to listen to what I say.”
“It was a great experience to work together [on the W photoshoot],” she says.”It’s important for couples to find projects outside of the children.” What else do two of the most impossibly glamorous and famous people on the planet do together? “We both fly planes, but we haven’t done that in a long time because we’ve been busy. We talk about the motorcycle trips we want to take in the future. We both want to get back to painting. We take French class together.”
In 2005, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Jolie met with Peter Gabriel, musician and co-founder of Witness, a human rights advocacy group. She was interested in his organisation’s work in Sierra Leone and joined the group in a meeting with former president Ahmad Kabbah to advocate for the implementation of Sierra Leone’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s findings. “She really does want to use her celebrity for good,” says Suvasini Patel, communications manager for Witness. “She recognises its power and potential, and is willing to use it where appropriate to shine a spotlight on terrible human rights atrocities.” Patel goes on to describe Jolie as “smart, thoughtful, generous and incredibly dedicated to our cause.”
love them …did you see

Bringing over my comment re Angie’s cheekbones, veins from another site’s thread:
The size of Angie’s forehead is good for her face. Her entire forehead is just enough to achieve her trademark features like arched eyebrows which is very intrinsic to “Angelina”.
It’s size is essential part of the overall look of her arresting & attractive face. It also supports her defined cheekbones which is her another trademark. The cheeks are vital to what is usually considered beautiful.
The essence of Angelina Jolie is the contours of her face and that includes her more than average size of forehead. It makes her even more beautiful as it emphasizes her bone structure. Besides, having this type of forehead is generally perceived (though no scientific evidence), a sign of intelligence…and she is undoubtedly a very intelligent woman.
As to her raised veins of her forearms and sometimes on her forehead, they are flaws (or not) but still beautiful. It makes her even “human”. She even calls this her best physical feature.
Ligaya, thanks for the excerpts. The parts about the kids giggling in the middle of the night and Madd writing letters to Mum and Dad are so cute. It is a beautiful family.
I hope that both of them get nominated for Oscar. Winning is good, but getting nominated is quite an honour, too.
Everyone, please go to parade.com/personality and vote for angie as a screen legend-in-the-making.
You’re welcome, Fan from Vietnam. Aren’t the kids cute? If I could meet any of the JPs, I’d want to meet the kids before Angie & Brad, lol. Thanks for wishing me health – not completely well yet, but getting better. Seeing the doctor on Tuesday.
I don’t know who’s favored because I think the critics groups have been split and I haven’t kept up with the oscarologists. Plus I’m not as familiar with GG voting patterns as with Oscar voting patterns, so I can only say who I *want* to win.
My total fantasy would be a tie between Meryl Streep ( “Doubt”) and Angelina Jolie (“Changeling”) for Best Actress (Drama) – or if not Angie, a tie with Kristin Scott Thomas, ( “I’ve Loved You So Long”). AND Meryl Streep (“Mamma Mia!”) tie with Frances McDormand ( “Burn After Reading”) for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical). LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE OLD BROADS!!!
There are professional Meryl h8ters like there are Angelina h8ters of their ‘lack’ of acting talent. And there are those who like to take excellence for granted – that’s the only explanation for comparing Meryl’s list of nominations with her wins.
If this isn’t Frances’ year, I’m OK with Rebecca Hall getting recognition. Sally Hawkins has already picked up lots of unexpected recognition for Happy-Go-Lucky, she should be happy with that for her first time. Kate is an excellent actress, some say she’s long overdue. But look at Sir Peter O’Toole – he still has yet to win his first Oscar; it took Pacino 20 years. Compare Meryl’s & Kate Hepburn’s noms/wins – Winslet has plenty of time. I’d rather Anne Hathaway win than Kate Winslet if one of the two has to win. I like the subject and director of Rachel Go Married Better. Anne Hathaway impresses me, especially since Becoming Jane with James McAvoy. I’m sure she gave a great performance, but she was given an extra oomph by the fact that she was stepping out of her princess box – people who get the unexpected think that’s because of better acting skill, as opposed to our different way of looking at them.

My total fantasy would be for Meryl to win BOTH Drama & Musical/Comedy tieing Angelina Jolie for Best Actress (Drama) and Frances McDormand for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical). LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BROADS!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHaHaHahahaha. . .

18 words UNDER MOD (4x)?
thank you girls! i have my driving license
Congratulations Melodie, stay safe when you drive
Congratulations Melodie! I hope it wasn’t too stressful and I’m happy you passed!
I’m looking at this fantastic picture of Brad and Angelina and all I can think of is that if ever they should do a movie remake of “Gone with the Wind” these two would be perfect in it. Brad with his mustache looks like a younger version (albeit blonde) of Clark Gable. Wouldn’t be great if they acted in a remake of Gone with the Wind? Your thoughts, please.
Congratulations to both Brad & Angelina for their
nominations. They both deserve, because they have really worked very hard on their movies and taking care of their 6 children. That gets a nomination from me…..GO BRANGELIA
A sante! Bon chance! What’s the right way to say CONGRATULATIONS!, MELODIE!
BTW, heads up, Pittwatchers. Ugh Weakly is running one of their polls pitting kids against each other. Right now the votes are running 79% for Kingston against Maddox.
Lygaya–”18 words UNDER MOD (4x)?” You are just TOO funny…I love your humor…I’m gonna have to start calling you “UNDER MOD”….LOL.
Randi—I don’t want Leo to beat Brad either. I never liked Leo’s (Titanic-so-so) acting UNTIL I seen The Departed. He was fantastic.
Santa Claus—All I want for Christmas is Brad & Angie to win..Is that too much?
OH, YES! A Gone With the Wind remake with Angie and Brad – perfect, and they’d put their own stamp on it, plus it could be in a different time period and/or location. Who’d play the Leslie Howard (Jude Law?) and Olivia de Haviland parts?
Thursday, December 18, 2008 – Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations Announced
In a way, the SAG awards are the important acting awards because they are awarded by their peers – they are supposed to be a measure of an actor’s work, artistry, craft, performance – awards not determined by popularity or money for campaigning.
WHAT DO SAG NOMS HAVE TO DO WITH OSCAR NOMS? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) awards the Oscars. Membership is by invitation, mostly old white males (like Hollywood) but getting younger, more female & diverse. Membership comes from the guilds (unions) of producers, directors, actors, writers, directors of photography, art direction, makeup/costume, music, effects, animators, etc.
Last time I looked, there were at least 6000-7000 AMPAS members – the majority are actors, makes sense when you think about it. The way the Oscar noms work, producers vote which 5 will be best pic nominees, directors vote which 5 will be best director nominees, and actors will vote which will be 5 best actor noms, 5 best actress noms, 5 best supp.actor noms, and 5 best supp.actress noms. And so on. THAT’S HOW THEY COME UP WITH THE NOMINATION SLATE. THEN EVERYBODY, THE ENTIRE MEMBERSHIP, VOTES ON THE ENTIRE SLATE. ET VOILA! OSCAR WINNERS!! SOME SURPRISES!!!
SO, IF ACTORS AREN’T NOMINATED BY SAG TOMORROW – not hopeless, but dim.
how classic they look! brad looks so debonair with his moose-stash(my nephew LOL)…on a serious note though, i want brad to win! he got totally robbed for babel…i think angie is going to have some competition from anne but i will be keeping my fingers crossed
Merry Christmas to all.
I want Brad pitt AND Angelina Jolie to WIN.
