Brad Pitt on the loss of Bernie Mac

by Sherry on August 10th, 2008

Brad Pitt and Bernie Mac Oceans 13

I was shocked on Saturday morning to read that Bernie Mac had passed away. At only 50 years old, it didn’t seem possible, and the last thing I had read about him sometime last week was that he appeared to be responding well to treatment for the pneumonia that had hospitalized him at the beginning of the month. It’s a terrible loss and I feel so sad for his family.

Aside from being a comedian and having acted in a great deal of movies, Bernie Mac was in Ocean’s 13 with Brad Pitt.

Brad issued a statement, saying, “I lament the loss of a ferociously funny and hardcore family man. My thoughts are with [his wife], Rhonda, and their family. Bernie Mac, you are already missed.”

George Clooney issued a similar statement: “The world just got a little less funny. He will be dearly missed.”

Such an incredibly sad story.

I was very shocked to hear of Bernie Mac’s death. In reading about him, the one thing that was consistent was how much of a devoted family man he was. My thoughts and prayers are with his whole family.
A big smile and laugh silenced far too soon.

When an celeb like Brad issues a statement, who does he issue it to? Does he send it by someone that works for him? Since he does not have a publicist or does he contact the media. Just wondering who Brad contacted. Just wondering?

His funeral is Friday, August 15th, wonder if Brad and the other Ocean guys will be there. They were married for 31 years at age 20 and 19. His wife said that he told her “Girl you better get on this train, I’m going to be rich”. Found this on the People site.
    So sad.

I was shocked a few days ago when I saw a headline “Bernie Mac is not dead.” It went on to say he was getting care for pneumonia. I had no idea he was so sick, or that he was sick at all. Fifty is a young age to die. I first saw him in the hilarious Original Kings of Comedy, and I loved his show. He had an imposing physique with a voice to match, often playing gruff characters with a mushy center. No matter how big or small his part, he made it memorable. Bernie Mac will live on in Ocean’s 11, 12 & 13, Pride, Bad Santa, Get On the Bus, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, and in the 4 movies that will be released posthumously.

I’m glad Brad and George noted Bernie’s passing.

Hi Gena - I’m a publicist so I can say that statements are generally issued through them since media will generally look to get reactions from people whom a deceased person has worked with in the past.

I’m shocked and sad to hear the news — he was one of the original Kings of Comedy — and I am glad Brad and George have issued a statement. I expect there will be a lot more commentary from other stars he worked with such as Drew Barrymore and the ladies of Charlies Angels.

    God Bless his family.

I was shocked when he died, and I was never aware that he has been sick for years with sarcoidosis. I have no idea what this is so my next step is to look it up. My he rest in peace and I hope that his family realizes how special he was to many.

Bernie Mac, you will be missed. Brad has a publicist Cindy G. On the other hand, Angie does not have a publicist.

Lucy, I read recently in one of the trade papers or their blogs that Brad no longer employs Cindy G. I notice that Angelina and Brad have Trevor Neilson, their political advisor (and, I think, also involved with the JP Foundation), make statements for them. He recently made a statement on Angelina’s behalf that she hasn’t decided for whom she’ll vote for president of the U.S.

I was shocked hearing this news, too. I do not know much about Bernie Mac, but when I saw him on HBO during some interviews behind the scenes of “Ocean’s Thirteen”, he looked very healthy and full of energy then. He was so humorous in his interview. Rest in peace, Bernie.

off topic: did you see the pics of katie holmes and suri on justjared this past few days?????????, i’m outraged: this poor baby girl looks terrified in every pics (from different days!). i can’t understand this: papz don’t have respect for this poor girl!

it’s a “chance” for brad and angie that their kids aren’t scary about papz. and i think brad and angie try to protect them a lot (don’t often go to LA, New York and other very mediatic places).

  • angela
    Aug 11, 2008 at 4:26 am

hi melodie (waving)… yeah, i saw that. it’s terrible. i don’t know exactly who to blame for that, it’s obvious that the papz who’s probably screaming her name and the flash of the camera are the reasons why she’s covering her face and ears on most of her photos or if katie knew they were exiting thru heliport, she should’ve brought earplugs for suri. i hope she could let suri play instead rather than bringing her to her broadway rehearsals or watching broadway shows at night. (in my opinion only)… sorry for the long post.

  • mélodie
    Aug 11, 2008 at 4:37 am

angela: it’s my opinion too. i think katie is responsible in this case, she should understand that her baby girl needs to live in a more peaceful place than new york or LA, but i’m not katie and i can’t decide what is good for suri!

sherry; a new about brad and angie:

According to the Rocky Mountain News, Angelina and Brad may host a charity event during the Democratic National Convention which will be held in Denver August 25-28. The couple is supposedly in talks with “a local promoter” about the event.

Why shouldn’t Katie Holmes take her child with her everywhere? Isn’t that what we admire about Brad and Angie. Their children go to the set, and ride on planes and helicopters. This pic doesn’t look any different then the hundreds of pics we have seen of AJ and Brad carrying the kids and trying to navigate around the media. The problem is with the paparazzi not with Katie Holmes. I think we have a little bit of a double standard here.

  • Ligaya
    Aug 11, 2008 at 8:50 am

I have to agree with Susan: it’s the paparazzi’s and tabloids’ fault.

The same with those who say Angelina should just stay put in one place, and take care of the kids - don’t take them anywhere because they won’t see anything except the inside of hotels.

And whose fault is that? The predatory paps who are hounding them relentlessly. Should celebs not have any kind of life at all because the paps are pursuing and persecuting them? Should women cover themselves from head to toe because otherwise they’re inviting r*pe?

I maintain that the JP kids do get valuable experience in their travels, but that’s another post.

  • Sherry
    Aug 11, 2008 at 8:57 am

Susan - I agree completely. It’s certainly not Katie’s fault. I don’t think it’s fair for us to admire Brad and Angelina but then criticize someone else for the same thing.

Jennifer Garner is rarely seen without Violet but she’s considered a good mother for it. Angelina or Brad take the kids out (or they both do together), and we think that’s wonderful. Gwen and Kingston, same thing. Katie’s just trying to be a good mother the best way that she can. She may as well leave Suri at home if she can’t take her out at all, but that would be unfair to both of them.

Katie Holmes leads a highly criticized life because of the person she married, and I admire her for ignoring it as much as possible and just trying to enjoy her daughter as well as trying to help Suri enjoy life too.

yeah girls, i agree with you, i can’t express myself very well sometimes: sorry. i think katie is really a great mom and it’s not her fault of course! papz are really bad people!

Thanks, Melodie. ;-) It’s so much to fun to chat about the Jolie-Pitts and why we love them, and share it with other JP fans! Also, it’s nice to commiserate with each other when Angelina, Brad and their family are being abused by the tabs/paparazzi.

    Long live Pittwatch!

    new angie movie

Jolie replaces Cruise in Col’s ‘Salt’
Actress to star in Philip Noyce’s spy thriller
    By MICHAEL FLEMING
“Edwin A. Salt” is about to undergo a gender change.

Once expected to star Tom Cruise, the Columbia Pictures espionage thriller will be redrafted by screenwriter Kurt Wimmer as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie. Philip Noyce remains attached as director and Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash are producing.

Jolie is close to a deal to play the title character, a CIA officer who’s accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy and must elude capture long enough to establish her innocence.

Cruise had long flirted with the project, but that ended recently. The well-regarded script had several male movie stars circling.

Jolie took a liking to it, prompting the studio’s decision to rewrite it. Sources said the project won’t require that much of an overhaul to suit her.

After Universal beefed up Jolie’s role in “Wanted” and then marketed the action film squarely on Jolie’s shoulders and watched it gross $132 million domestically, Jolie reestablished in the wake of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” that she is the rare female who is viable in an action genre that has been almost the exclusive domain of men.

“Edwin A. Salt” will undergo a title change, and if everything falls into place, the film shapes up as a return vehicle for Jolie, who recently gave birth to twins. Another candidate for her return is the Lionsgate drama “Atlas Shrugged,” which has been adapted by Randall Wallace from the Ayn Rand novel.

Jolie, who also provided a lead voice in the DreamWorks Animation hit “Kung Fu Panda,” drew strong notices at the Cannes Film Festival for her starring role in the Clint Eastwood-directed drama “The Changeling” for Imagine and Universal. That film opens in late October.

ligaya, great news! The People copy arrived at our house yesterday (Tuesday)! It’s pretty quick - less than a week! Having seen the photos online, I think the large printed ones in the mag are much better. I like the interview, too. I love it when Brad said at the end “Always said if I were to do it, I’d do it big” in response to the question “Did you both always hope to have a lot of children?”.

ligaya, have you seen my email asking about your preferred payment method?

well i agree that it’s the papz fault and i agree also that maybe katie just wants to bond with her daughter but i honestly don’t think it’s appropriate for a 2 year-old child to watch broadway shows at night (in my own opinion again) . Suri is always photographed with her parents so i don’t think one or two nights without her would mean that she’s being locked-up. Tom could’ve been her date but since i’m not Katie and i don’t know what’s going on with their life i think it’s better for me not to say or comment about it - so, my bad…. anyway, i still adore Suri and i don’t accuse Katie being a bad mother. peace out.
