Brad Pitt’s Prototype Housing

by Sherry on January 7th, 2008

9th ward house model 6 (by distorttheinfo)

I thought this was really interesting. While surfing around, I found someone who went to see the Make It Right area in New Orleans, checking out the pink houses. They also had an exhibit showing some possible prototypes for the houses that could be built in the Lower 9th Ward and she took pictures - see them all here.

Some of them are pretty neat. I wonder how much influence Brad Pitt had on the designs, if he played a part in some of them or all of them.

The pink houses came to an end on Sunday. Hopefully the money from donations will keep coming in though, so as to keep the project moving steadily forward. http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2008/01/pink_house_project_ends_on_hig.html, they’ve raised $10 million matchable dollars and the donations poured in from over 17,000 people and from over 80 countries! Some of the high profile names include:

Angela Bassett, Bill Cosby, Tom Cruise, Carrie Fisher, Morgan Freeman, Laurence Fishburne, Will Ferrell, Goldie Hawn, Salma Hayek, Ethan Hawke, Angelica Huston, Samuel L. Jackson, Quincy Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Jack Nicholson, Keanu Reeves, Ving Rhames, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, Meg Ryan, Kevin Spacey, David Spade, Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Denzel Washington, Barbra Streisand, Russell Simmons, brothers Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, and brothers Branford and Wynton Marsalis.

Still, as happy as I am to see some other celebrities getting in on it, I think all the non-stars, the people like you and me, deserve a big round of applause too, for contributing to such a worthy cause.

What I found great was that when they finish removing the 40,000 square yards of pink material, it will then be recycled into handbags to be sold to profit the campaign on the Make It Right official site - that’s cool!

About 70 families have thus far applied for financing from the project and they’re hoping to start breaking ground to build by March for the first 20 homes.

I love stories of hope.

Which is your favorite prototype house? My favorite is the one I posted above.

That’s really great the response they got, especially considering it was the Christmas period and people are stretched.

Am surprised at some of the celebrity names now attached, there are a lot of families and foundations who are also credited with adopting the majority of the houses at the site.

Very proud of Brad. So his and S Bing’s $10 were matched???

My fave is Prototype No.5, I love the detail on the veranda and stair banister. Although I do like your choice too Sherry.

no offense, but if New Orleans floods again, this house won´t be built high enough anyway. and the kids could fall off the balkony….but not bad for a hobby architect.

The Houses are amazingly nice! I wish my house was that nice but its basically a square with a triangle on top of it.

    Phoebe, you are offensive.

You should check your facts. The houses are to be built at an appropriate high; safety is a high priority.

There are 13 internationally acclaimed architects who have created these designs: Brad’s name is NOT accredited to any of the designs.

This is an Example of the safety issues taken into account. Not only are the home raised but they have areas designed to provide the families with a haven whilst they wait for a uncaring government to rescue them.

Thanks BlessBrangelina for clarifying the flood height issue for Phoebe… My favorites are Models 6 and 9. W/ well thought out plans and a visionary spirit, Ward 9 will prove to be a beautiful neighborhood. Katrina victims can return to New Orleans & rebuild their lives w/ pride and hope. These homes are a far cry from the shameful formaldehyde ridden mobile homes they were initially given… Thanks Sherry for the update on Make It Right. I’m so happy to hear how much they’ve been able to raise and how many people have chosen to get involved. A shout out to Brad (again) for mobilizing a true & selfless effort to help Katrina victims. The effort is no longer a dream, it’s a real start.

and again, for those who once shouted: ” they should take care more about the katrina victims instead of collecting kids from third world countries! they are americans!” to brad and angie….
well, i wonder how they will twisted their words now by seeing what brad has done in this project.
i’m so proud of brad. i will continue to support his movies, becuz i know how he will use his money. and to angie’s movies too of course.
