Countdown to the Oscars: Angelina Jolie Oscar Fashion over the years

February 17, 2009 by Sherry

As we all wonder what Angelina Jolie will be wearing on the Oscar red carpet this year, I wanted to peek back at three of her past looks for the Academy Awards.

No one could ever possibly forget Angelina’s black Oscar dress with the long, darker hair and the dramatic make-up. While many referred to her look as “gothic” – and usually in a negative way – I actually really loved this. Maybe it’s because of my own goth days, but I found it to be a very striking look. Of course, she ended up with the best accessory an actress can hope for when she won the award for Supporting Actress for her role as the very crazy Lisa in Girl, Interrupted.

(I had always liked Angelina very much, ever since I saw her in Hackers which was an otherwise fairly bad movie, but Girl, Interrupted was what sealed it for me. Until that time, Winona Ryder had been my favorite actress and was the main reason I wanted to see the movie. Angelina ended up blowing everyone out of the water and from that time she took over the spot as my #1 favorite actress, and she hasn’t budged since.)

In 2001, Angelina surprised people when she arrived on the red carpet showing that she had decided to pass on the traditional gowns, going for a feminine white tuxedo look instead. I’m not a huge fan of pantsuits on the red carpet since I love seeing actresses in dresses that they would otherwise not be wearing, but this was so nicely fitted and it really made her stand out from the crowd. Not my favorite, but still a good one.

When Angelina hit the red carpet in 2004, she looked like a goddess in a shiny, white, low-cut gown and I thought that she looked amazing. Her hair was done just enough to let us see her gorgeous face and her make-up but it still looked natural. I think of all three Oscar looks, the white dress is my favorite overall.

Which was your favorite? What color do you think or hope she’ll wear this year? As I already mentioned, I’m hoping for a dark jewel tone, but it won’t be much longer to wait and see!

I agree with you Sherry…This is definitely an amazing dress. It was feminine and made her a stunning goddess

  2. It’s interesting to think that all three of those Oscar apperences were pre-Brad (well, they may have met by the last one, depending on when in 2004 MMS began filming), and the first two were pre-Maddox (actually, pre-kids period!) as well!

Anyway, she obviously looks younger in the first one (when she won for Girl, Interupted), but in the second one, she looks like a completely different person than she does now! By the way, I feel kind of silly for having to ask this, but…What year was it that she won for Girl, Interupted? I assume 2000 at the latest, as Sherry seems to have the pictures in chronological order.

All of that said, I can see a bit of her mom in her in the first picture. Also, the first and third pictures are proof that, as most of us have said repeteadly, Angie has always been on the thin side. :)

I like the white dress Angie was wearing. Feminine and sexy but I’m hoping for this coming Sunday, Angie will wear something bright like red would be gorgeous.

ah! it’s so nice to look back at the past..

i’ve watched Girl, Interrupted and it’s really
the best! Lisa (angie) made me laugh and made me cry at the same time.. love it! she won an oscar in 2000 for this..

the first pic really depict how much young she is and how still in a naughty way she is.. haha! it’s those time when she’s still not so serious about life, no kids and no brad..

second pic is really cute! i love how she carries it.. love the color too!

the last pic is my favorite one.. she looks like a greek goddess who come down from mount olympus!! wow! sexy and vey classic..

for this year Oscar.. i hope she would really wear a RED gown! i love the color red and it would really stand out for her.. i like it to fit her body and like a greek style.. hehehe.. i do hope she would wear a red gown.. i’m really praying for that!

    Information about moive “Salt”:
    Sabretooth To Join Jolie’s Salt
    By Josh Tyler: 2009-02-17 00:31:09
    .
Sabretooth To Join Jolie’s Salt If you’ve been watching Fox’s new X-Men Origin: Wolverine trailers, then you’ve seen plenty of Liev Schreiber. He’s facing off against Hugh Jackman in the movie as Sabretooth. Next year, you may see him facing off against Angelina Jolie. Schreiber… not Sabretooth.
    .
Moviehole reports that Liev is in talks to join the cast of Salt. In it, Angelina plays a CIA officer accused of being a Russian sleeper agent. She must elude capture long enough to prove her innocence.
    .
What part Liev will play in the movie remains unknown, but MH insists it’s a “major” role.

the white gown is so very ‘Oscar’; the ultimate in ‘gowns’. It shimmers, it drapes, it’s slinky and sexy- and, worn by a beauty like Angie, there is no competition. If her children get to see her just before she departs for the RC, they will surely ALWAYS recall that image as one of ultimate glamour.

  9. czechjoyce says:

I too agree it’s the white dress hands down…I did not like the black dress at all. I remember when she wore it the media compared her to Mortica (sp) Adams or Lilly Munster and I have to agree with them for once. I’m really rooting for them to win, especially CCBB. On one hand it’s a shame so many good movies came out at the same time as a movie like CCBB, its a once in a decade type of movie and it’s not getting near the accolades it’s due.

  10. Kati says:

I definitely like the last one – the white one – best. It´s kind of sexy and feminine. That black dress she wore in 2000 made her look like Morticia Adams. I really hope that she wears something colorful – either red or yellow – this year. The green dress she wore at Cannes last year showed that also green suits her very well. She should wear colorful dresses more often. She´s still young and should wear colorful clothes. Not because I have anything against black as a color. But I think she should give it up for a while.

  11. ducks says:

I would like AJ to wear a turqoise gown similar to the white satin or silk one in the 2004 awards. Or a dull copper /bronze gown like the one she wore to the Sag awards. I fear she has lost her edge!.Personally, I don’t think either of the stars will be given awards. I think Bollywood has turned its tricked up back on them. But it would have been lovely!

  12. Randi says:

I’m hoping it’s something more like the gray little mini she wore the other week – something that shows off her amazing body.

BTW, can you let your readers know about the giveaway over on my blog? I’d love for everyone to get a chance to win!

  13. CHRISTY says:

Sherry I agree the white dress is so stunning she light up the RC. The black was maybe a statement, I am in a phase, I don’t care about the talk next day. I can see her laughing the next day, just my imagination running away with me.There is also a silver shimmering one, I think when she won for Gia I love that too, I think she spoke about jumping in the pool. I hate the fact that they have not won a major one yet, I am still rooting for my fav guy Brad. I will watch just to see them. The talk among New Yorker’s are the OSCAR show is dead they don’t care, except for Angelina and Brad, they will just see what they are wearing and how loving and gorgeous they are and that will be the highlight of the show.

  14. Mary Ann says:

My goodness now I am trying to remember why I don’t remember that beautiful dress from 2004. What a beautiful look. I would love to see Angie wear a green gown. I remember the one last year when she was carrying the twins. That was such a wonderful color on her.

  15. TL uncool J says:

i am glad angie dosen’t bother with high fashion, and does not listen to fans and non-fans alike about what she should wear or not wear.
i say so what if angie has no edge, what is edge any-way?
the lilly munster (who rocks btw lol!) in 2000 was edgey, and no-one liked it!

  16. kim says:

I am glad the AJ wears what she wants to be comfortable, is who she wants to be etc… and it is nice that she has the money (now) to not care and do what she wants.
But lets face facts this is her and Brad’s job, to promote their movie’s by appearing at opening nights, festivals and award shows. And when they do show up to these things I (as a movie fan) expect to see them dressed up, and on the cutting edge of fashion. What they do in their private time is none of my business, what they wear to go get the groceries or pick up their kid from school, none of my business. But on the the Red carpet and in Magazines etc…. That’s what I pay for (with my hard earned money) so therefor I have some expectations as to what I want to see. And I want to see Hollywood Glamour and High Fashion!
Try and remember these Actors get there pay checks from us the movie going public, the toy buying public, the video game buying public, The Merchandising Buying Public. With out us they don’t exist.
That being said we do not own their lives outside of the movie’s, and should leave their families alone.

Dear Sherry,, With your permission I’d like to share this short video of Angelina wearing the white shiny gown in 2004 Oscar Awards. Of course they’ve seen it many times but maybe two ot more want to see it again. Hello JP fans.:-) here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNX_V1OwxJE thanks.

    OT:

Kim, sorry to answer late. Ryan doesn’t know the Canada date yet, I’ll let you know as soon as he tells me. BTW, he & his brother played Star Wars a lot when they were kids – probably stimulated their imaginations. :-)

You can see Ryan and his co-writer/director Anna Boden on the Independent Spirit Awards(called the Indies Oscar or the anti-Oscars) ceremony this Saturday, Feb. 21. They’re up for Best Screenplay along with a couple of lightweights – Woody Allen and Charlie Kaufman. IFC broadcasts the award live & uncut 5pm ET/2pm PT. AMC rebroadcasts an edited version 10pm ET & PT.

Neela, yes, I’m a proud mom but even more I’m such a fangirl and movie nut! Now I have access to Ryan’s sets, cast & crew, after-parties, behind the scenes, and learn Movies 101 indirectly! Autographs, artifacts, collectors items, swag! So uncool. I restrain myself. I missed my chance to meet Ryan Gosling in person at the Friday night party for Half Nelson in 2006 due to car trouble, but I was at the Independent Spirits Awards ceremony, and an arms length from John Waters and Richard Roeper at the after-party. Ryan was at the 2006 Oscars ceremony where Ryan Gosling was honored just to be nominated. Now he’ll be known forever as “Oscar-nominated Ryan Gosling.” Who knows, maybe down the road, attending the Oscar ceremony and Vanity Fair party and chatting with Angelina and Brad is in my future.

I love Morticia, then and now. The white goddess gown is stunning, I think she wore this to the Alexander premiere. I loved the yellow gown she wore a couple of Cannes ago, and the green she wore when pregnant at Cannes. The short feminine dress with lacy straps for AMH Cannes premiere. The stunning strapless black below the knee number she recently wore to ??? The white retro-style number with buttons detail at the New Orleans CCOBB premiere. The black leather & mesh Versace dress for the MMS premiered. I have so many favorites I’m sure I’ve forgotten some.

  21. Mary Ann says:

Chopin, thanks so much for that video. Five years ago she was beautiful and she is still beautiful. Little off topic: I find it so interesting when we read the thoughts and comments of Brad and Angie’s peers they have nothing but respect and admiration for them. Both are said to be very professional on the set. But there are so many every day people out there that have nothing good to say.

  22. Liz says:

Hi Sherry and friends: I vote for the dress too! I always watch all the award shows. It’s a little indulgence. I kick back at home with a glass of red wine and keep a running commentary with my husband on everyone’s clothes and speeches. Seems like there’s a teary moment every time, too. It’s fun.

The funnest year so far was when I was watching the Golden Globes a few years back–and from the kitchen, heard a familiar voice on the TV. Turns out, one of my college buddies, Ryan Murphy, won best TV drama that year as the creator of Nip/Tuck, and he gave the acceptance speech for the cast. A little brush with fame.

I think it would be great if Angie and Brad presented an award this time…it would certainly increase their exposure time on the air.

  23. deborah says:

Of the three outfits the white gown is more of the old hollywood style. I’d love to see her in something more form fitting to show off her amazing shape. Similar to the white gown but with small capped sleeves for her long elegant arms. The neckline draped higher in the front (to hug her asset there, then sweep down the back (she as a beautifull back) with a bit of flare and drap through the back of her waist. It should conitue to the form fit down through her waist and around her hips, but at the flare it should drop off before it curves fully around her hind end. She needs alittle fullness here, here it should gather and fan out longer in the back, shorter in the front with a open skirt to above the knee. The legs should play pee-a-boo, but never fully exposed. Think 20’s-40’s styled gowns with a more sleek, modern feel.No shoulder pads. They should be outlawed!! The fabrics we have now are so amazingly elegant and they move so well that they can give you the coverage thats needed but look and feels like air. The color should be somewhere in the light blue/silver tones with a shimmer, soft look.

  24. kim says:

    Ligaya,
Tell Ryan good luck, “Woody who?” lol. That Star Wars its done a number on generations of kids (myself included). Maybe I can look forward to my son rubbing elbows with the stars in the future. Although this year skiing, hockey and soccer seemed to have taken over. But we still have the light saber fights or clone nerf blaster fights at least once a week.

  25. Lyn says:

goddess is the word, angie looks so beautiful in this gown. i hope she is the number one knock-out at the oscars.

  26. mélodie says:

ligaya: good luck to your son!!!

thank you so much sherry for doing this article (you know, i really love fashion!)

yeah, angie looks like morticia, but i think morticia is a really beautiful woman!

    the tird is my fav!

and as some people here, i ‘m hoping for a red dress!!!

  27. Sarita says:

Great post Sherry! I would also love to see all of her looks this awards season lined up (what she wore at the Globes, SAG awards and BAFTAs…am I missing any?).

In any case, as I’ve often said, COLOR! Jewel tones, yes. Red, deep green (plays off her eyes), a royal purple, any tone of blue, canary yellow…all of these would be welcome. And I agree with most of Deborah’s thorough assessment: basically something long that shows off her back, though I think low-cut is always nice as she’s been wearing a lot of high-necked outfits. Please no black, white or gray (as much as I love the goddess gown above). One thing Angie always does well is makeup and accessories. I just hope she takes it up a notch at the Oscars and goes old-school glamor for us.
