Discussion thread: Future movies
With the recent rumors of the possibility of Angelina Jolie playing Catwoman in a future movie, I’ve been wondering what movies you’d like to see our favorite couple star in at some point in time.
Let’s discuss it, shall we? What movie would you love to see star Angelina Jolie ? What about Brad Pitt?
I think it’s safe to say that many of us would enjoy seeing them in a movie together again, like we did back in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but that’s not too likely, at least while the kids are still young since they try very hard to avoid working at the same time unless they have no choice due to overlapping obligations.
I’ll go first. While I think Angelina Jolie is an excellent choice for Catwoman, I’m with many of you who said it would be more fun to see her do a Tomb Raider 3. I absolutely loved the first one and despite the fact that sequels often suck, the second one was great as well. I would love to see her take on Lara Croft again.
As for Brad Pitt, I just finished reading an excellent book called Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace One School at a Time. The book is a true story following an American mountain climber named Greg Mortenson who gets lost coming down from K2 and ends up in a tiny village in northern Pakistan. When he sees that the children sit outside in the cold and scratch out math equations in the dirt with sticks in an attempt to have an education, he promises to come back and build a school for the village. It takes him three years but he does it and over ten years builds 50 schools in the northern part of Pakistan, including refugees from Afghanistan trying to escape the Taliban regime. I think, even though he looks nothing like Greg physically, Brad could really play the part well and I loved the book so much that I would love to see it on the big screen.
Your turn! Tell me your dream roles for the Jolie-Pitt duo!

I JUST started reading Three Cups of Tea. From what I skimmed of it at my friend’s house, Brad would be perfect.

me first! nice topic sherry.:)
for angie’s next action movie, i really want another tomb raider movie. i’m not just looking for the action scenes. i really want to see different parts of the world these TR films often feature. and i guess brad & the kids wouldn’t mind exploring the world too.:)
i really want another MAMS movie but i don’t think it’s happening soon. what i’m hoping though is for both of them to be featured in a cool music video, let’s say, a U2 music video. it doesn’t take much time as compared to making a movie.:)
lastly, my dream project for them is to star in a movie adaptation of erich segal’s DOCTORS. maybe my idea is lame but i just love to see them in it. LOL:)

A sequel to Mr and Mrs Smith would be my first choice. The premise is perfect for both of them, action, romance, and of course a little goofiness. Doing a picture together would take both of them away from the kids, so I don’t see it happening anytime in the near future.

Three Cups of Tea sounds interesting - I want to go read that book, now. It does sounds like a good role for Brad.

Liza,
My former graphic design professor just gave me that book (for my sis)! My sis and I haven’t read it yet because of projects and other books we’re still trying to finish up, but I’ve heard it is very good and truly inspiring. What a way to give back to the people who saved his life.
I agree. I think Brad either starring in the film or producing it would be excellent. The book reflects he and Angie’s humanitarianism.

By the way, Sherry. Congratulations on being mentioned in that Japanese zine. I’ll be in San Francisco in 2 weeks, and usually I drop by Kinokuniya in Japan Town, so I’ll be sure to check out that publication. It’s just amazing that you were noticed by a magazine from another continent.

Great idea for Brad. Juicy topic, I’ll think about it. Just off the top of my head:
Besides Catwoman, I’d love for Angelina to play the lead Irena in Cat People (the original black and white 1942 version). It’s one of my all-time favorites - atmospheric, full of psychosexual tension, and a heartbreaking story. (Though I wouldn’t mind if the remake had a happier ending.)
94% rottentomatoes rating: Irena Dubrovna is a young, Serbian artist living in New York City. When she meets American Oliver Reed, she falls in love and gets married. But their union hits the rocks when she becomes consumed with the belief that she is the victim of a curse. According to Irena, the curse will make her turn into a deadly panther the minute she becomes emotionally aroused.
• A modern remake of Taming of the Shrew
• A lawyer who helps unrepresented refugee children in the U.S.
• Updated remake of Bride of Frankenstein
• Woman crime boss; or biopics of first woman firefighter/police chief
• Biopic of Elizabeth Blackwell, first woman doctor in U.S. (I think)
• Biopic of Madame Curie
Basically this is from brainstorming strong woman roles.

Off topic, a bit - James McAvoy has nice words about Angelina: “Angelina doesn’t live her life in a celebrity fashion. She gets treated like a celebrity, but she just lives her life. She doesn’t go to a lot of parties and do drugs and take free this and that. She doesn’t look for her picture to be taken.”
Big article about him, the question he’s asked a zillion times, life before and after fame, and training 14 hours a day to get a buff body: http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,24101351-7642,00.html

I think Angie would rock it as Catwoman. (Halle Berry was truly, truly awful, though. There are no words for how awful he was. I cringe now when I think about that movie.) I would also love to see her in something quirky, like her role in “Playing by Heart,” which was such a great little movie. Action is great, but something sweet, something funny, would be a nice change too.

I would love to see a Part 2 of M/M Smith, her and Brad had such good chemistry together, but know that will not happen. I know it is rumored about the movie with Thomas Crown Affair (3), wanting her to gain 38 lbs, but I would love to see her with Pierce! I think he is so good looking. I can’t wait to see her in the “Changeling”. I like her in action comedies like M/Ms Smith and TR was a great movie. I enjoyed “Taking Lives” never watched it until I started following her. Would like to see her in a movie like “Borne” or a female “James Bond”. I would kinda like to see her in a movie playing completely opposite of the characters that she normally plays to display her acting talents, someone fragile and sensitive to see if she could expand to a totally different character. Angie always said she likes strong women but I think it would be neat to see her play a totally different character.

“Playing by Heart” is one of my favorites also. Since I started following Angie, after M/Mrs. Smith came out, I have purchased all of her and Brad’s movies. I have looked at Brad’s talent as an actor differently, before I saw him as a pretty boy, but since being with Angie, I have noticed what a good actor he is and how he has taken on very interesting movies with interesting characters. I like how Angie and Brad look for something in parts that tell an interesting story or the character has something that they are interested in. They do not take on a movie role just to make money.

OK i’d love to see them both together in another film. Not necessarily a sequel to MMS. I think both of them in a comedy or a film like Fight Club would be ace. Even something really controversial like natural born killers (i know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it is a classic) would be great! I’m just thinking of a male and female lead and something that would really provoke emotion because they’re so good at that. Also, i’d love to see Brad in some kind of fantasy role or war role. And i’d love to see Angelina in a fantasy role like Lord of the Rings (she’d make a beautiful elf! hehe) or another film like Gia or Girl, Interrupted because i thought she was amazing in those! Angelina can make me feel so many different emotions when she acts..she’s amazing! Truth is i’d love to see them in any kind of movie and i hope they will make many more to come and not just child-friendly ones.

Passerby, me too, i kinda don’t like the idea of MAMS2. :P
I would like to see Angie do some comedy like her role Laine in Life or something like it. I thought she was really funny in that movie. And for Brad, i’d love to see him do some Troy kind of movie where he shows up his s.e.x.y body.

Ever read the outlander by Diana Gabaldon?
Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another…
In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon–when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach–an “outlander”–in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord…1743.
Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire’s destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life …and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire…and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
Brad is my Jamie from the moment he enters the story.

I actually would love to see Angelina as a James Bond villain. Didn’t she say she always wanted to be one to? Or something like Girl, Interrupted.
Brad I would love in a very kids orientated movie as a father or something would be amazing for him and his family. Like voicing for something like Kung Fu Panda.

Brad said, after Sinbad the Sailor, that he wouldn’t do more voice characters any time soon because the kids got confused hearing his voice but not seeing his image.
Since the kids loved KFP, meybe now they’re OK with Brad voice acting.

Great ideas: Sin City 2! LC3! A remake of Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Angelina and Brad are older than the original characters, but it would still work if the script is adjusted. Angelica Huston could play the older woman. A Japanese-American playing Mickey Rooney’s role – just not so stereotypically racist. And a little more frank about Angelina’s character being a call girl.
An update of something comedic like Barefoot in the Park (except characters are a little bit older): free spirit Angelina with her opposite. Or go the other direction, and something like the Way We Were – people are always saying Brad is like a younger Robert Redford.

Yes, I would also like to see Brad in a kids movie, a comedy similar to the one starring Eddie Murphy (I don’t remember the name of the movie but it was about two guys who set up a private nursery with a bunch of kids). It was a very funny movie and I think Brad’s kids would really love to see him in a movie like that.

Ooh! The mention of Natural Born Killers (which I liked, but didn’t love) made me think of another fun one. Like I said, I doubt they’ll do a movie together any time soon but if they did, I’d love to see them in a re-make of Bonnie & Clyde!

I also like Passerby’s idea of Angelina being a great Bond villain - greater than the others, Angelina knows guns and knives. (The gowns! The jewelry!) Comedic thriller reuniting Angelina with Daniel Craig (LC). Just as Halle Berry was an homage to Ursula Andress, Angelina could be an homage to Honor Blackman’s Pussy Galore. ;-)
Also, Diana Rigg’s The Avengers. The one with lovely Uma was a misfire.

I have read the whole series a really really good read that you can’t put down, one of my favorites. Brad would make a good Jamie, But I don’t think AJ would make a good Clair. I would love to see that book made into a movie though. If any of you have the chance you should pick up these books. As for AJ how about wonder woman, she definitely has the body and the eyes for it.

I just thought I would love to see a historical movie during the 1800’s or the napoleonic wars where AJ plays Russian aristocracy, or a gypsy and Brad plays the English major type, or better yet the southern rich plantation type in Europe. Maybe the whole thing takes place in Paris or Istanbul.
Or how about a historical movie where AJ plays Catherine the great of Russia.
Or how about a movie with Brad and AJ telling the story of Heracles and Deianria.

I’m very partial to Medea, deeply tragic on so many levels:
wikipedia - Although Jason seemed to be a great hero, his heroic deeds were realized only by Medea’s love for him. In the end Jason showed his true nature, when he became engaged to marry Creusa, the King of Corinth’s daughter, to strengthen his political ties. When Medea confronted Jason about the engagement and cited all the help she had given him, he retorted that it was not she that he should thank, but Aphrodite who made Medea fall in love with him. Infuriated with Jason for breaking his vow that he would be hers forever, Medea took her revenge by presenting to Creusa a cursed dress, as a wedding gift, that stuck to her body and burned her to death. Then Medea killed the two boys that she bore to Jason, fearing that they would be murdered or enslaved as a result of their mother’s actions. When Jason came to know of this, Medea was already gone; she fled to Athens in a chariot drawn by dragons. Jason cursed her, never himself, for what happened.
Because he broke his vow to love Medea forever, Jason lost his favor with Hera and died lonely and unhappy. He was asleep under the stern of the rotting Argo when it fell on him, killing him instantly. The manner of his death was due to the deities cursing him for breaking his promise to Medea.

(Not surprisingly, under mod: Medea’s tragic story.)
Here’s one from Brad ;-) – Hercules: Another episode of his female affairs that stands out was his stay at the palace of King Thespios, who encouraged Heracles to make love to his daughters, all fifty of them, in one night. They all got pregnant and all bore sons. Many of the kings of ancient Greece traced their lines to one or another of these, notably the kings of Sparta and Macedon. (wikipedia)

Marielle, I am with you on the Outlander series. My husband and I retired to Puerto Rico in 1996. I did not speak or read Spanish and we didn’t have cable when we first moved there. So I love to read and one day I begged my husband to take the long drive into San Juan because I felt I could maybe find a book store with American novels. So I went into this store, there was no system, books just piled up all over. I picked a couple and then I thought I better grab a real thick book to last me for a while. It was Outlander and when I was reading the back of the cover I was thinking, boy I don’t know if I am going like this, but I took it. Needless to say I was hooked and flew thru that book, begged hubby to make the trip again and thank goodness I found the next 3 books. Brad as Jamie and Angelina as Claire, quiet down my heart. I can hardly wait for the next book in this series, and I know when there is no more Claire and Jamie I will be very sad. Oh and by the way we returned to NJ 2 days before 911.

Yeah I would love Brad in a daddy daycare type movie or the pacifier type movie. That movie with vin diseal was funny. Hercules for Brad would be like another Achilles and I’m kind of not feeling it but it would still be nice to watch.
Oh Angelina playing Medea is very imaginable. Like Medea that character who did anything and everything for her love including killing her brother or was it father for him and then Jason was like “well thanks for all the help but I don’t want to marry you” Its like that character where Angelina’s character is being pushed around and not her pushing others around.
I want to see either Brad or Angelina in a war movie. Like Brad is almost in one. Angelina as a nurse and Brad as a soldier. Sort of like Pearl Harbor and Angelina. Except they probably wouldn’t be in the same movie.
The roles they could play are endless.

Yes, Endless. :-) Passerby’s idea reminds me of A Farewell to Arms. Other Hemingway characters: Maria in For Whom the Bell Tolls, Lady Brett Ashley in The Sun Also Rises, Cynthia Green in Snows of Kilimanjaro (btw, the snow’s almost gone because of global warming), and Kitty Collins in The Killers.
Classic remakes: Double Indemnity, Postman Always Rings Twice. Eloise Kelly in Mogambo/Red Dust (this could star Brad too).

I think the Sun Also Rises is a great idea, as Angie would look wonderful in 1950s Spain, breaking hearts. Angie could also play a great femme fatale in a noir-type film.
For both Angie and Brad, a remake of The Way We Were (Brad’s always compared with Robert Redford) would be beautiful–I like the idea of seeing them play complicated characters in a long love affair.

Three Cups of Tea was NOT my cup of tea - a little bit too much of this “I am the white man come to save the poor third world” mentality. Wouldn’t want to see that movie. How about The Last Town on Earth, takes place during the deadly flu epidemic in 1918, I could see Brad playing one of those characters…

Another grat thread, Sherry ;)
I would also like to see Angie as Catherine the Great!!! She said once that a role like this would be the kind of “once in a lifetime”. And directed well, could be an Oscar winner. I like epoque movies and I would love to see her in something like that. Maybe an adaptation after Jane Austen or the Brontee sisters would work too. Or Daniel Defoe’s Moll Flanders. I loved that book.
Girl, Interrupted kind of roles also suits very good to Angie. She was “too good to br true” in that one :p
I also liked Lara Croft, but I don’t think that it would ever be a third one, unfortunately.
Le’s ideea about Angelique, marquise des anges is magnificent and Marielle, I haven’t read that book, but it sounds very, very interesting. Smth very provocative for Angie.
But I think that one big issue is that all this movies to have a very deep and clever plot and a very good director. It seems that it takes smth supernatural to get an award these days. For example the Palme d’Or. You’ve all seen the great reviews that The Changeling got. There were even standing ovations at the end. But still no prize… Why? Beats me. I’m still hoping that after the premiere and everything will we see what we all want to see. An award for Angie! She has outstanding tallent and it is a shame to be outcomed by the negative publicity.

I’d love to see her in a “talking” movie just like Before Sunrise & its sequel Before Sunset. It’s a very intellectual film & i am sure it fits her. Love to hear her voice always.
I also want to see her play the role of a lawyer, defending someone who everybody sees as guilty. She’s the only one who believes her client as innocent. Better yet, or another version of 12 Angry Men, and she’ll play the only one among the 12 jury who thinks someone is innocent. The challenge here is how to convince other members of the jury to take her side in order to come up with a unanimous decision or verdict.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith part 2 would be great both for Brad & Angie. This time the concept is straight comedy which was the original idea in MAMS part 1, the action scenes in MAMS 1 were only added as the shooting of the film progressed. The plot must be the challenge of creating their famiy considering they are former spies.
