Help Brad Pitt to Make It Right
One of PittWatch’s loyal readers, Ligaya, came up with the best idea ever for this holiday season. Being fans not only of Brad Pitt’s movies but also fans of Brad Pitt’s humanitarian efforts, we have a way to help support his Pink Project, part of the Make It Right campaign.
As many of you already know, Brad is helping to launch a campaign of affordable and ecological homes for displaced families who fell victim to Katrina in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward. Rather than passively watching him make this happen and sitting quietly in our own comfortable homes, silently applauding his efforts, Ligaya has suggested that we take part. Unfortunately life is such that we can’t all pack up and head to New Orleans to pick up hammers and drills and pitch in directly.
However, if you go to the Make It Right website, there is an option right up top to donate to the project. The best part is that you can see exactly what your money will go to. You can sponsor certain rooms of a house, parts, a tree, or make a simple cash donation of your choice.
What do you say? All of you really came through when I did the Blogathon on my personal site and you helped me raise about $3000 for the UNHCR in honor of Angelina Jolie’s tireless work with them. Let’s pull together again and donate to the Pink Project. The donations you can make run the gamut of $5 for faucets to $250 dual flush toilets to the entire house. I don’t think any of us here are rich enough to buy a house outright, but the amounts we can afford will add up in the end and we’ll be helping families in need and supporting Brad Pitt in a project he believes in.
If you donate, please come back here and tell us what you donated in the comments. I’d love to see how much we can gather up by the end of December. There are a lot of us here on this site - we really can make a difference.
Go, go, go!
(And you can help even more by getting the word out - share the link to this entry with others and encourage them to help too.)

This is such an awesome thing Brad is helping to do, it’s a shame our president couldn’t start caring more about the people here in our country the way Brad and Angie do. I wish I could have donated more, but I did donate $20. Like you said, every little bit helps. I just think this is the greatest project, and I’m so excited to see Brad so passionate about it. I saw a special Anderson Cooper did a couple months back, it’s so sad to see that people here in our own country are having to live this way. With Brad’s help, and our donations, their lives will be changing for the better.

This is a great idea! I have given as well. Also, please help me get Brad & Angelina interested in running for public office. I wear my JOLIE PITT 2008 shirt with pride - everyone always asks about it. Even though 2008 is too soon for them to run, maybe if enough of us wear them, they’ll start thinking about it in the future!!

Step by step a journey is begun and completed. And many drops of water make an ocean. If 100 people gave $1 each, that would be $100. It all adds up and every little bit counts. Every donation, big/small, is important.
I’m impatient to make my husband’s & my donation but I forgot his chorus has a concert in San Francisco tonight. I’ll have to wait till tomorrow because he’s probably going straight to bed after coming home. sigh

Just have seen very cute pics from JP on justjared. Angie and Mad rub noses, looks sooooo cute *wow* it really lightens up my day. If you see the pics look at Mads shoes. They are the same like Brads just smaller - seems like Mads likes his Daddies style… what a great family. I wish them all the best.

Did it - donated 1% of the cost of the solar roof = $250. Hopefully, once we review our year’s finances, we can donate more. I’m thinking of earmarking 1/3 of our donation budget towards the Make It Right/Pink Project. New Orleans has been our passion since Katrina.

I found this when preparing for our New Orleans vacation.
Kalypso made a movie when whe was 10 years old at the 6-month anniversary of Katrina (12 min.), and followed with another one when she was 11 years old at the one year anniversary (30 min. you can watch in sections or all at once).
In a few minutes, Kalypso and her friends drive home the issues the news covers (or doesn’t). These are voices from New Orleans & the Katrina diaspora. These movies say more of the state of NOLA before, during and after Katrina than some page-long newspaper articles.
Kalypso’s movies are soooo good, from a young New Orleanian girl, from the grassroots heart, funny, spontaneous, eye-opening, intelligent and charming, and full of humor and hope. They are good companion pieces to Spike Lee’s “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts.’ Kalypso’s got quite a future as a filmmaker, rocker and maracas player. She’s a hit on YouTube.

Unfortunately, at this point, I can’t shell out anything just yet, but I’ll do my best to donate between now and five weeks from now. Biggest holiday wishes to the JPs and all their fans.

I watched the show last night and was so amazed at how down to earth this man is. Even my husband watched and believe me that was a miracle. He has a thing for rich people who do nothing to help others, but he likes Brad and Angie so much because they really do care. If Brad can get us to care I hope he can get more of the wealthy to care. Anyway I made a small donation of $30.00 this morning and hope to do another one at the end of the month when our SS goes in the bank. Also liked the way Brad was able to get around Larry’s personal questions without being rude to him. He told us enough to know how much Angie and the children mean to him. Also I teared up when he talked about the children and the yelling out of their names, the camera’s in their little faces. Wonder how much Larry will donate this morning.

Although all humanitarian projects are laudable, this MIR project resonates with me because the environmental and ecological features are being applied to low-cost housing. You usually see this application on more upscale homes. Most specifically, I’m so impressed with the use of low VOC products. VOC or offgasing from traditional building products are very toxic to humans especially when the homes are sealed tight. That Brad and his team went beyond and start putting a premium on poorer people’s health is very forward-thinking.
Just to drive home the point of how significant this is, I recall a house that was sold last year that set the record as the most expensive house sold in Canada. It is located just southwest of where I live. It was built to specs. for this very wealthy couple but the lady of the house got so sick soon after moving in and I don’t think they lasted for even a year in that gigantic and opulent house! The first thought I had was the VOC! Such a shame.
For that alone, I made my donation.

It was a fabulous interview and I also liked the way he answered and put an end to some of the more personal questions. Looking forward to the uncut portions of the interview next week.
I honestly though Larry would tell Brad off more than he did about NEVER coming on his show previous requests.
The issue of the children ridiculous, there really should be a law against that.
I thought we could buy the tee shirts??? I think that will also rally a lot of money, hope they consider it.

BTW, did you know that MIR in Russian means peace? Don’t know if Brad thought of that - Make It Right is such a brilliant name for the project, simple & clear
OK, we can give even if we don’t have money.
(2 birds in one still takes money but: are there people on our gift list who’d be happy if we donated in their name, or would be happy with a MIR t-shirt, tote or Caputo hat?)
–I’m going to talk with my teen & children nieces & newphews about giving & sharing. Even if the kids can only come up with $1 each or together, even if a teen can give only the price of a download/CD/DVD/movie/Starbucks - it’s the thought and action that matters, not the amount.
I think the soul & heart-lesson of affirming our connectrion with all of humanity, specifically with the people of the Lower 9th Ward, will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Kids may want to start penny jars & ask family, friends, schoolmates etc. to donate. Maybe penny drives can happen in their classrooms, churches, local neighborhood businesses. Maybe in summer, they can have a lemonade stand.
People just talking about Katrina is a contribution to the people of New Orleans being remembered.
–We may not have money, but we have email addresses. Just passing on the information about MIR/Pink Project will be tremendous.

Great idea,
the MIR project is really working well. i remember going to the site when Brad had just opened the foundation (near the begin of the week when he said his speech) and there were only 3 sponsered homes, and i just checked back and 10 homes have been sponsered. Brad’s doing a great job, and well done to those of you who have donated.

hey - where’s my post? It was a positive and thoughtful note. Why is it wrong to call things as they are- instead of pandering to goofy show biz?
Brad Pitt can and should pay for the 150 houses himself or with a couple of his buddies. Why? Because he cares about the project and BECAUSE HE CAN. Simple as that.

Did anyone see CNN’s great special last night honoring everyday heroes? Very inspiring. I taped it & haven’t finished watching it yet.
Anyway, Harry Connick Jr. was asked by Showbiz Tonight’s AJ: “What are you seeing from your perspective when you go down there [NOLA] now?”
Harry said: “I’m seeing a lot of Brad Pitt. I got to give it up. He really is doing an amazing job. Put his money where his mouth is. He has some great ideas. In fact, I wrote him today to thank him. I don’t know him. I maybe met him one time. But people like that, if we had 20, 30 more people like that around, New Orleans wouldn’t have any problems at all.
“I see things like that that are great demonstrations of leadership, passion, integrity that makes me very happy.
“New Orleans has a long long way to go. I think people who go down there and see the toursity areas may thing really it’s coming back.
“But you go to some of the residential areas like the 9th Ward, it looks like the hurricane happened a couple of weeks ago. It’s thanks to people like Brad Pitt that are bringing the city back.”

Donna - as I stated previously, I’ve been offline a great deal with a nasty gastro and I’m still trying to catch up so unfortunately, dealing with moderated comments was not at the top of my list.
But you know what, to be honest this is the kind of thing that really ticks me off. There’s always someone who says, “oh so and so gives this much and does that much but why can’t they do more?”
Brad donated a great deal of money to this project. He has also donated a great deal of money to developing nations.
Yes, technically speaking he could sponsor the entire project himself but it’s not his responsibility to shoulder the entire thing, it’s meant to be a nationwide (or actually now it’s a worldwide) effort of people coming together and helping the people of NOLA after their own GOVERNMENT did squat for them. And in this way every person who donates can see these houses when they’re done and think, “hey, I helped create that for a family in need who has been homeless for over two years”.
Why is it that so many people always want the people who are doing something to do more, more, more? I donated $20 because that’s what my budget allows. Technically speaking I could donate more if I chose to not get my children gifts for the holidays but I did what I felt I could so that I could still celebrate Christmas with my children. Does that make me a bad person? Does it make Brad a bad person because he doesn’t buy all 150 houses on his own dime?
I say no. It does not.
Mary Ann

Donna you are really out of the loop, Brad gave 5 million of his own dollars right at the start of this project. Also, he is spending alot of time in New Orleans when he could be doing a movie and making 15 to 20 million dollars. So how much more do you want from him. How much did you donate? I donated 30.00 because this is what my husband and I could afford. Put your money where your mouth is.

Amen, Sherry!!! Brad has already donated an overwhelming amount of money to this project and to many others throughout the world. I 100% agree, this is not his responsibility, he is helping to rebuild because of the kindness in his heart and because of his love for America and the World. There are many other millionaires and billionaires in the world, I hope some of them will step up and match Brad’s donation. Donna, I hope you decided to put your money where your mouth is and donate to this great cause! Our government let the people of NOLA down, and now the people are pulling together to help them. We don’t need anymore negativity in this world…

Readers weigh in on 9th Ward home designs
Sunday, December 09, 2007
We posted on nola.com the 13 architectural designs submitted for homes to be built as part of Brad Pitt’s Make It Right initiative in the Lower 9th Ward. The postings sparked a lively debate among readers about the merits of the various plans. Here is an edited sampling of comments posted to nola.com.
a sample:
– Many thanks to Brad and Angelina for choosing to reside here and for making an effort to improve the community. As to my preference, I like the Concordia and Graft models. Too bad elevated homes were not mandated 50 years ago. Thanks again Brad and Angelina!
– My favorite is the Concordia. The Graft style looks somewhat like the old Creole Cottage styles. Some of the other styles depict a Southern California-esque look (not quite what I think should be in the 9th Ward).
BUT . . . at least Brad Pitt and his power base did something extremely progressive to make a difference in this recovery (something the HEADS of all government levels are SORELY lacking the chutzpah to do)! THANK YOU, SIR!

Karen Dalton-Beninato, (the author co-founded the New Orleans Musicians’ Relief Fund with her husband). HuffingtonPost, Wed, 12 Dec 2007, 5:32 AM PST
Brad Pitt: NOLA’s Oprah
As Oprah Winfrey takes her Barack Obama support on the road, the celebrity currently courting 2008 candidates’ involvement in New Orleans recovery is Brad Pitt. When pressed on tonight’s Larry King Live for a presidential endorsement, Pit said:
“I’m still . . . I still . . . I lean . . . I’m still listening.”
Being from the Show Me State of Missiouri and a part-time New Orleans resident, Pitt seems to be waiting to see how important the city becomes for each candidate before issuing an official endorsement.
Democratic frontrunners including Obama and John Edwards have swung hammers at the Habitat for Humanity Musicians Village, the brainchild of Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis. On tonight’s show, King let his guest know that Hillary Clinton planned to back Make It Right’s 9th Ward program. With the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund a major sponsor of Make It Right, that’s no great surprise.
Pitt said he was thankful for any candidate’s involvement in New Orleans, and added that Make it Right has support from Barack Obama’s camp as well.
“I hope it is one of the major issues in this campaign. I hope it’s used not so much as a whipping stick for the past administration but really used as a proving ground.”
Sounding at times like Grandpa Larry asking why you give your kids such weird names, which was an actual question, King gamely peered into devastated 9th Ward homes with Pitt, bringing that image back into the lives of CNN viewers who may not have New Orleans at the top of their presidential priority list two years after Hurricane Katrina.
Last week, the New Orleans Times-Picayune quoted Pitt saying he wants all 2008 candidates to directly address the ongoing struggle of hurricane victims across the Gulf Coast.
“I would challenge all the candidates to focus on what’s going on down here, what’s not going on here,” Pitt told Krupa. “We’re going to build some houses here, but there are bigger issues that need to get answered here, such as education and health. These need to be major factors of the campaign. My point is: If you can’t get it right down here, you’re not getting it right anywhere. This is the place to do it, and there’s definitely a need for it right now.”
For any candidate who can bring comprehensive rebuilding plans to the table, hundreds of thousands of displaced New Orleaneans are still listening.

Shalom y paz, Pittwatchers! Time flies during the holidays, and it’s already the end of week 2 of the Make It Right/Pink Project. Today I read that $3.5 million of the $5 million to match Brad’s $5 million donation has been raised (http://www.thetowntalk.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071214/NEWS01/71214011). Awesome! That’s excellent news! That $3.5 million includes OUR donations – yay!
The 1st week, 14 of us gave $2425 (!!!) + 5 gave unspecified amounts + 3 made pledges. Doesn’t it feel good? This 2nd week, Akishdebaba & Heather added $65 to our total = $2490 ($10 more dollars and we will have donated the equivalent of a roof solar panel to help cut 75% off energy bills for a lifetime). Actually, I’m sure we’re over $2500 because Ranch donated an unspecified amount.
Thank you everyone – gracias, merci, salamat. Angelina & Brad & Maddox/Pax/Zahara/Shiloh would be so proud of us. The 10 houses paid for grew to 27! Celebrities who gave whole houses: Jimmy Buffett, Donna Karan, and the band Widespread Panic.
If you’re a procrastinator like me, this might have slipped off your busy holiday agenda. I found this:
Give Today
Do it now. It is not safe to leave a generous feeling to the cooling influences of the world. - Thomas Guthrie
Consider this advice on how you can help change the world. And just do it.
