MTV’s interview with Angelina Jolie and Clint Eastwood

by Sherry on October 7th, 2008

MTV has a great interview with Angelina Jolie and Clint Eastwood about Changeling, working together, fame, and more.

For those of you who sometimes have trouble getting video to work, check out the full transcript at the MTV site, but here are a few highlights:

MTV: Angelina, you’re no stranger to difficult roles. Was it an easy sell to go down another difficult road on something like this?

Jolie: No. Reading the script made me want to stay away from it as far as possible, because I didn’t want to think about anything happening to my children. I didn’t want to have those scenes. But I couldn’t forget it. I found myself telling people the story of the script. And obviously the chance to work with [Eastwood] was something I always wanted. I guessed, and I guessed right that he would help me through this.

MTV: Both of you have experienced such a huge measure of fame, I wonder if you feel like it’s ever gotten in the way of your work.

Eastwood: I think when you’re younger and you’re starting out, you spend a lot more time thinking about how you’re going to get to a certain place emotionally. I think in this stage of life, I figure I’ll just let it happen. You’re not as conscious of outside distractions. And you get to my age and you think, “What the hell are they going to do to you? There it is, if you like it. If not, I’m sorry to disappoint you.” The mechanism is the same for everybody, whether you’re trying to find something similar in your life to relate to or if you’re just standing there telling the truth, [James] Cagney-style. Everybody has their technique. Whatever works.

MTV: What about you, Angelina? Have you figured out how fame cannot get in the way of your life and work?

Jolie: I’ve figured out how not to have it be a part of my life. I have a big busy family. I’m a mom and a lot of other things in my life. And I’m an actor, and I love telling stories and I like expressing emotion to try to connect with other people. With this story, I’m so curious to hear other mothers’ reactions. I think it’s a film that many people can relate to.

MTV: Is it harder for you to watch yourself in these extreme situations in this film, or is it harder for Brad [Pitt]?

Jolie: I never like to watch myself ever. I still haven’t seen “Wanted.” I heard it was fun. I feel like I did something right if I can watch something and feel removed enough. I can watch this movie. I’m proud of this. I think it’s a really beautiful film. You’d have to ask Brad, but I think he likes this one.

I love the way she mentioned that she’s too busy with her family and other important factors in her life to really think about the fame side. That’s a great way to ignore all the garbage in the tabloids.

Meanwhile she wants to know what mothers think of Changeling. I’ll have to go see it on opening night - you never know when she might decide to get over her technophobia and read PittWatch! (Kidding!)

    Thanks for this post, Sherry:-)

Can anyone tell me how I can make one of those snuggly pictures my desktop/wallpaper? I’m such a big mushy romantic at heart. I think it’s great the kids see their parents so affectionate with each other.

I LOVE that everyone’s so relaxed with each other, no one’s self-conscious - that says a lot about how Angelina and Brad treat others with respect. And that Brad and Angie feel comfortable with PDA says a lot about how they are treated as ordinary people.

HAH! How are the nattering nabobs of negativity going to spin THIS!?!

One photogrpher said they always want to take a bad photo and sell it to the tabs so they can fabricate easily. This time, they are having a hard time because there was no bad angle from Angie’s first appearance photos no matter how hard they try to catch a bad picture. Anyway, the tabs use old photos too. I will make sure I see this movie, in its first week.

    Ligaya,
Try downloading the picture. Then click the control panel (if you are using windows) then click “Appearance and Theme ,” then select wallpaper and backgrounds…. Search for your downloaded pix and voila !

Great interview. Thanks, Sherry. It is clear that Clint and Angie give each other a lot of love and respect as they have said really great things about each other. I didn’t know about Clint’s efficient and quick way of directing before, but it must be great working with someone like him. He seems like a real gentleman, too.

Ligaya, I will check out the pic where Angie and Brad snuggling each other in broad daylight. Your post made me smile. You really have young soul here! Btw, what is PDA?

Wow, the photos of Brad and Angie snuggling are so cute! They seem to be really happy, relaxed and “at home” whenever they are in NOLA. It’s like they are back to where they always belong.

Sherry, if I were Brad and Angie, I would read Pittwatch everyday to feel the endless love and support given to them by Pittwatch readers here :)

Those wonderful snuggling photos tell just onoe thing to the whole world:those two are truly, deeply, madly in love with each other. Just the fact that they show their mutual affection on broad daylight should quiet the tabloids down. But unfortunately it´ll be temporary. Soon they will find something nasty to write about this couple. It´s nice to see that the boys aren´t bothered by their parents´ very public PDA. And why should they be? They are old enough to realize how much mum and dad love each other. Especially Mad. After all it was him who brought mum and dad together three years ago.

the best photos I’ve seen of Angie and “her boys” from in the Ninth Ward are at popsugar. Take a look - 65 photos (LOTS of Angie smiling!):

Well, Rita, I have to agree that there were even more cute photos at popsugar. It’s always nice to see happy active kids and happy involved parents. Too often the parents look more tired and put off when with their kids (which I am sure is true of all of us at times).

    Sherry,

There are pictures of Jolie-Pitts heading back to France (?) with Brad and Angie lugging twins’ carseats and other 4 kids from plane to car.

    This is Popsugar.

Well it was so good to see all of them. I hope that we will see pictures of them while they are living in Germany. Now I guess we are waiting for W Magazine to come out.

Can not wait for W mag. I wish there were something that JP fans could do, other than not but the rags, to keep them from printing lies about Angie and Brad. They make up one story after another and no one ever calls them on it.

Thanks for the link, Missy. I love it that Maddox and Pax were playing in the light rain – no harm in that. I don’t know about New Orleans, but when I was little in the Philippines we played in the rain, too, because it was warm. The JP kids must love their home in NOLA because they can have freedom to be kids at last, instead of being assaulted by paps.

Fan from Vietnam, PDA stands for Public Displays of Affection – starting with holding hands, arms around each others’ waists, hugging/cuddling/snuggling, stroking beloved’s face (Angie), stroking beloved’s side and derriere (Brad), squeezing/pinching said derriere (Brad), kissing with various degrees of intensity, and on up from there (Drew Barrymore sitting on a guy’s lap and devouring him with a deep kiss). In a lot of cultures, this isn’t done, but it’s OK in the US – up to a certain point because onlookers sometimes feel uncomfortable. I think these pics of Brad and Angelina visiting the MIR project is the most PDA by them that we’ve seen so far – it seems more intimate because they’re out in the public instead of on the RC.

Hah! Star is up to its old tricks – it’s accusing Angelina of having a tummy-tuck. I guess they didn’t notice her slight tummy bulge – or is that another baby bump? Double-standard is alive and well too – have these new mommies been accused of tummy-tucks: Nicole Kidman with concave stomach, spotted in a white tight-fitting jeans 2 weeks after giving birth, Jessica Alba, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, and more?

A UK gossip rag is reporting Angelina’s “new” St. John campaign with the black/white photos – I guess St. John decided to launch the campaign later in the UK than in the US.

Video of Angie, Brad, Maddox and Pax talking business and playing at the park. It’s cute how Maddox and Pax are playing (or fighting?) at one point Angie had to take the umbrella away, and brad had to speak to Pax about something Maddox seemed to be complaining about.

I love how they’re so normal, but what else do jolie-pitt fans expect. :) hehe

Thanks, Marilynn. I love videos even more than photos because it’s ‘live action.’ Looks like Maddox takes after Gene Kelly in “Singing in the Rain,” and he uses the umbrella like a lightsaber or sword sometimes. That’s the best kind of play – using the imagination, no need for expensive toys. It’s funny how he’s a little disobedient and resists Angie when she wants the umbrella, and how he stumbles backwards because of mom’s superior strength. Some guy or someone pretending to be a guy said in a blog that the kids are just accessories to Angelina - obviously not paying attention. Angelina hops from Pax to Maddox and back to keep them spinning. I’m glad one of the security guys stepped in the line of the camera so that Pax and Angelina could be private when Pax seemed upset about something.

Another video, this time from NY1, at Changeling premiere with Angelina, Clint and Amy Ryan. Angelina’s excited about seeing for the first time one of her movies with a real audience – and not just a screening for industry people.
