No more raiding tombs for Angelina Jolie

Back when we were discussing movies we’d love to see with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, many people expressed an interest in seeing Angelina return as Lara Croft in another Tomb Raider installment. Looks like it’s not going to happen.
Apparently the role of Lara Croft will be resumed by someone new, 23-year-old Alison Carroll. You can check it out over here.
(I was amused by the story about how she got locked in her apartment the day of her big meeting with producers and had to throw her bags over the first-floor balcony, leaped over, and jumped the fence to get there.)
It will be interesting to see how she holds up. To me, Angelina Jolie will always be Lara Croft so I’m not sure how well I can accept a new version. It would be, to me, as if they replaced Harrison Ford as Han Solo in Return of the Jedi.
On the other hand, if Angelina does indeed take on the new CIA role sometime next year, she’ll still have plenty of time for high action stunt work!
Edited to add: I read this late last night, after a very long and tiring day. As a result I misunderstood and didn’t realize that this new girl is not starring in an upcoming movie, she is simply the new promotional girl for the game. Sorry for the confusion.
However, now I’d like to open it up for discussion and ask you all who else in Hollywood could play Lara Croft if Angelina Jolie did not take the role for a hypothetical new Tomb Raider film? If it can’t be her, who’s your next choice? The only person I can think of off the top of my head is maybe Jennifer Garner because of her great work on Alias. The biggest problem there, though is that she doesn’t quite look the part. She’s very pretty but she’s more of the “girl next door” look whereas Angelina really did look like Lara Croft is supposed to.
Ideas?

IF WON’T BE THEY SAME. ANGELINA IS ALWAYS BE LARA CROFT. NO ONE CAN REPLACE HER. I THINK SHE JUST DON’T WANT TO TAKE THIS MOVIE RIGHT NOW,BECUZ OF LOCATION PROBLEMS AND THE BABIES ARE STILL TOO LITTLE TO TRAVEL ANYWHERE. THIS YEAR SHE DID NOT MAKE ANY MOVIE AT ALL, STILL SHE WAS IN THE FORBES LIST OF MONEY MAKING. ALL THOSE MOVIES THAT WAS SHOWN WAS MADE THREE TO 2 YEARS AGO. SO SHE WAS MAKING MONEY SOMEHOW THRU ANY ADVERTISING. BRAD WAS THE ONE WHO WAS MAKING MOVIES THIS YEAR.CHANGELLING WAS MADE LAST YEAR AND WAS JUST FINISHING UP THIS YEAR, STILL ANGELINA IS MY LARA CROFT NO ONE ELSE.

Actually, this article refers to a role not for the movie but instead as the face of the video game franchise…traveling to promote etc. So there is still hope for a Jolie reprisal.

NOT REPLACING JOLIE — A new Lara Croft is picked every few years to replace previous models for CONVENTIONS. This girl has nothing to do with a new movie or an Angelina replacement. The Lara models have been around and used for promotion longer than the actual movies have been around so feel better and don’t worry.

I get the impression from reading the article that this girl is taking on the promotional responsibilities of the gaming version of Lara Croft.
I don’t think this is a casting decision related to the movie franchise.

Remember - those children will need their daddy too.
How is it that women can’t work and be a parent too? What special quality do men have that they can work and be good parents at the same time? Raising a family and working isn’t an either/or proposition – it’s both/and.
The point is that staying at home with the kids is not a choice for most women – not for billions of women around the world. And for those who have a choice, like Angelina, it doesn’t mean that they are barred from fulfilling themselves by being an artist, scientist, politician, goodwill ambassador, entrepreneur, etc.
We’ve come a long way from the days when the ‘little woman’ stayed home with the kids and was solely responsible for childcare. That’s a luxury very few people can afford nowadays. Because of the state of the economy since the 1960s, both parents have had to work to make ends meet. Many have to work 2, sometimes 3, jobs to support their family. That doesn’t make them bad parents - it makes good parents because they’re providing for their family.

‘Changeling’ highlights N.Y. festival
By DADE HAYES
Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling” will make its North American preem as the centerpiece of the 46th New York Film Festival, the Film Society of Lincoln Center said Tuesday.
Fest runs Sept. 26-Oct. 12.
Universal’s “Changeling,” which drew plaudits in Cannes, stars Angelina Jolie as Christine Collins, a single mother in 1928 Los Angeles who embarks on a quest for justice when her 9-year-old son goes missing.
Unlike downtown’s comparative upstart Tribeca, the New York Film Festival remains a small-scaled, tastemaking affair featuring the cream of the international crop.

After reading the article my understanding is that this model is going to be the face for the video games, replacing the last model. I didn’t think it meant she was doing the movie as well. Not sure if Angelina would reprise her role but I’m also not sure that a model rather than another actress would carry on the movie roll.
Oh, just found link confirming that Alison Carroll is Lara Croft’s new face for the video game only, replacing former model Nell McAndrew.

Oh, got distracted. :-)
All the reports I read, except the link above, said the new actress was for the game. I took this to mean she’d be the model for a new Lara Croft game. Action movies cost LOTS of money ($115M for Lara Croft: TR, $110M for MMS) and studios don’t usually risk that kind of money on an unknown. And none of the trades have said anything about a new Lara Croft movie. If there is a new movie, then best of luck to her. Angelina will always be the real Lara Croft.

Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft, and there is no two ways about it. The Jolie is Lady Croft!!
It’ll be like changing Indiana Jones with a diff actor after the first two movies, never be the same…….
Sure Batman has gone thru many reincarnation and Bale being the best yet, but how do you top when the first is already the best…… Though I could see Spiderman with someone diferent, Tobey McGuire is not whom I could relate as Peter Parker…sigh!!
Anyways I also heard that this new girl is for the new TR game, not the movie….. Am still hoping Angie will take up Lara’s leather outfit in the future.

When I read it, it seemed to be for the Video game. If she is new Lara Croft for the big screen I think something will be lost. Angelina brings that sexy mischief/bad girl that is hard to duplicate. The new girl seems like a nice girl is fit and healthy body but she did not translate the sassiness.

Every few games, the franchise gets a new model to portray Lara *for the games*. They use her as a live model to create the game character, and she does public appearances. She’s the third one.

Angie played as the first Lara Croft so she will always be Lara Croft.
For Angie not working much this year, it’s her choice because of the growing family, I salute her for that, she sacrifice a lot by just being a mom & partner to Brad & vice versa when Angie start working Brad will stand behind her to take the role as stay home dad for a while. This couple shows a lot of respect for each other, that some people assumed impossible to accomplish because they are both the biggest stars in the world & look how everything is working out perfectly to both of them. That’s called team work, combined with unselfish love, lots of understanding from your partner & support. I am really glad they found each other they belong to each other. God bless the Jolie-Pitt’s.

This new girl Allison is the face of the video game, that’s it. Many less famous actresses have played Lara Croft for the game promotions (including the gorgeous Rhona Mitra). If they intend to do another movie sequel, they’re never going to put it on the shoulders of one of the promo girls. I’m sure they’ll still want Angelina for the part.

Lara Croft is so much identified with Angelina Jolie that anybody who will take that role, unfortunately, will pale in comparison to Angie because she was very very good in that role, like second skin. She owned that role even when she’s sleeping. The role becomes her trademark. The children even came to know her because of Lara Croft which Angie was very grateful & glad. The expression, the physical movement, the sex appeal, the aura, everything, are rolled into one, in one persona only, and that is Angie. Besides, Tomb Raider 1 made Angie the most successful female action star of all time, though Tomb Raider 2 was also a success. Sometimes the name Lara Croft & Angelina Jolie are interchangeable, but possessing one body, one soul.
Just recently in Wanted, Angie’s role as Fox is so effective that I can’t imagine any other actress to play that role either.
When Mr. & Mrs. Smith were also played by another actor & actress for TV, it failed. MAMS will forever be Brad & Angie, and no one else. That film, aside from very memorable to their personal lives, really fits them to their roles to a T. No one can have the kind of chemistry Brad & Angie exudes in the film. It’s very natural. Their chemistry was the main reason why MAMS was very successful, too.
So, I may be sad that Angie is not the image in the Lara Croft video game but the memory of Lara Croft in both Tomb Raider films will forever remain in my memory & has a very big place in my heart.

That’s what I get for reading stuff late at night after a long and tiring day - I didn’t catch that it was only for the game promos and not for future movies. Duh! :)
Let’s talk about this then. IF, and this is just IF, they do another movie and Angelina doesn’t play the role - whether it’s a conflict, she doesn’t want to, or they choose someone else - who do you think could possibly be the next best choice?
I can’t really think of anyone. Maybe Jennifer Garner, she was really good in Alias, pretty physical and all. the only problem is that while Angelina just LOOKS so much like the original Lara Croft, Jennifer Garner has more of the girl next door look.

I think martial artists/actresses Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung or Zhang Ziyi (maybe too slight and delicate) would be great choices. Also Sophie Okonedo. Great at acting and great at action. Think about it, non-traditional casting I know, but look at James Bond from Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Pierce Brosnan to Daniel Craig.

AJ was and is Lady Croft but if they had to replace her with someone younger I would have to say Megan Fox. It has something to do with the eyes and that slightly exotic look. I know some people don’t like her because of comments she has made, but we all say dumb things when we are young and trying to define ourselves, even AJ from what I remember. I really liked Megan Fox in Transformers and I think she would do well as Lady Croft, she is beautiful, sexual and yet has that tomboy appearance in her actions.

hahaha, i read something really funny (but a little St*pid) in a french site: apparently, angie asked some advices to a “friend” Tera Patrick (who is an X actress…) for her future role as catwoman! the article said “the girls have some emails contacts” (it’s funny cause angie always say that she can’t use a computer).
angie “asked” some advices about the fact she’ll have to be se*y and feline in the role of catwoman!!!!!
it’s a little bit absurd:
1. the role is not yet confirmed
2. if one people on earth is se*y and feline, it’s sure: it’s angie!!!!!!!

I don’t think Angelina will do any more Lara Croft movies because I think that franchise has run its course of the kind of quality she would want. I’m not sure she is interested in making that kind of movie anymore, either… fantasy character. Too many other movies like that are out, and if she’s going to do something in the genre, do a Batman movie (if Nolan and Bale will do it again) and be Catwoman.
RE: working mothers. I agree that many women work and have children, and she certainly can have the best of help. She also will continue working, of that I’m sure. But she isn’t just a “mother.” She’s got six children under the age of seven. She talks about wanting more. At some point she’s making a choice, I think. If she’s going to have a “soccer team” of kids, they have to come first… unless she’s going to do it in name only. This big family is a choice on a lot of different levels. This isn’t a tradiditional family, so it can’t be handled traditionally. She’s moving into Josephine Baker and Mia Farrow territory. Quite frankly, I’m not sure that I “100%” respect that decision because I have children, and I know the kind of needs they have, especially as they get older. So, I hope she follows what she says she will do… work little and be there for them. I’m sure, over the years, a HANDFUL of important roles will emerge. I think, from what she said, she wants a Daniel Day Lewis style career… Not Lara Croft VI.

I agree with Carrie that Angelina is unlikely to reprise Lara Croft (sigh) - but maybe she’ll come back when she’s 60, like Harrison Ford (she joked about it)’
Well, there are probably billions of us mothers in the world. I know from living in 3 different countries, and observing various cultures within each country, having read on the subject and drawn from my husband’s experience as a trained childcare worker..I would guess that there are almost as many theories on parenting as there are parents. So I find it a bit presumptuous that since Carrie has kids, she knows what’s best for the Jolie-Pitt kids. Of course, Carrie knows best what’s best for her children - but (IMO) that’s not necessarily right for everybody else - or anyone else.
BTW, where’s Brad in this equation? And why is Carrie an expert on mothering and Angelina not? They’re both mothers - is it because Angelina is an actress?

UNDER MOD: agreeing and disagreeing with Carrie’s post.
P.S. I think Josephine Baker and Mia Farrow are wonderful, inspiring role models. When I think about it, there are many, many families (including women single-heads of household) with as many or more children. The only difference is that Josephine and Mia are/were entertainers, and they deliberately made families that were inclusive in terms of race and nationality, adopted and biological (although Josephine had no biological kids).

Why is this not a traditional family? Maybe not in modern term last 2 generations (1940’s), but it was before that time. Lots of people have big families, with much more then 6 children in it. Plus they (Jolie-Pitts) have loads of help both family and hired. I don’t know way everyone make such a big deal about the size and age of this family. My friend has 5 kids all under the age of 5. daughter, son and triplets and she works and so does her husband (both lawyers). Economically they found it was cheaper to hirer a live in nanny then pay for day care. AJ and Brad can hire I army of nannies and teachers etc. and they only work a couple of months a year. That leaves lots of time for them to play with the kids and take them places. And as I have just found out (my son is 8) kids by the time they are 8 don’t really want to hang out with their parents, they would rather be with their friends and siblings. I really don’t think AJ needs to make any choice between acting/working and staying home with the kids she is practically home all year now as it is. And I can’t tell how jealous I am of this.

Aug 13, 2008 at 12:04 pm

‘Kung Fu Panda’ sequel being discussed - $560 million in global ticket sales
Katzenberg says decision will come in next two months
Reuters - Aug 13, 2008, 07:12 PM ET
DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Wednesday that the studio was in talks to make a sequel to boxoffice hit “Kung Fu Panda” and could make an announcement within two months.
“We’ve started conversations about it, and I think in the next 30 or 60 days, we’ll be able to talk completely about that,” Katzenberg told Reuters, when asked about a follow-up to a film that has raked in $560 million in global ticket sales.

The article is about casting actresses in general for male parts:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2008/aug/14/angelinajolie.tomcruise?gusrc=rss&feed=film
Who needs a male lead when you can have Angelina Jolie?:
Jolie should simply go about remaking every single Tom Cruise film with herself in the role. She could be the Hitler assassin Stauffenberg, and she would wear the eye-patch loads better than Tom. She could be the sports agent in Jerry Maguire and her delivery of the line: “The f***ing zoo is closed!” would be hair-raising. She could be Madame Phelps in Mission Impossible, lowering herself from the ceiling on pulleys and tapping away on laptops, flexing abs and biceps far more buff than Tom’s. Most importantly, she would be a great navy pilot in Top Gun, and her lethal presence as she “rides someone’s tail” would give us a break from all that tiring 80s suppressed homoeroticism.
Apart from everything else, she would be a lot taller. [ouch]

Kim, no grandkids in sight. (sigh) Maybe when they’re more established in their careers. I’m a huge Star Wars fan. Are you going to see the animated Clone Wars this weekend? I just watched Family Guy’s Blue Harvest SW spoof - hilarious! Have to add that and the Robot Chicken: Star Wars dvd to my collection - and they’re making a sequel. I also want to get a copy of George Lucas in Love.
I only have a 900 sq. ft. house, so if I’m going to get Angelina memorabilia, I’ll have to give up other things - like exchanging my Anakin (mean look in his eyes, cloak billowing, brandishing his lightsaber) standee for one of Angelina in Lara Croft’s skintight silver scuba suit.

Carrie, if you notice, my comment was directed to the whole community – not at you personally. I’m sorry you think I’m attacking you, I’m strongly disagreeing with your opinion – that’s not the same as attacking you personally. And I think I generally acknowledge in my posts that you have a right to your opinion, as I have a right to mine.
IMO, attacking you would have been directing my ire at you personally (e.g., “Carrie, your opinion is _____, what a ____ to say”). Attacking you would have been the kind of ultra-nasty flaming exchange between h8ters and some fans on the other boards.
I think it’s obvious that you and I disagree on our interpretation of most things, except for being fans of the Jolie Pitts. Kumbayah isn’t in our future. That’s OK. But please don’t ask me to water down my opinions – to me, that’s like silencing or censoring myself. I’m sorry my opinions - or the way I express them - make you uncomfortable; I feel the same way about your opinions. I admire other posters in our community who have wonderful ways of expressing disagreement in a kinder, gentler way than I do. I’m just plain-spoken. Sorry. :-) So keep expressing your opinions, and I’ll do the same. (And I’m sorry, but my opinions include opinions about other people’s opinions.)

My son and his friends are so excited for tomorrow, I guess I was just looking for someone to share that with, since most of my friend (mostly my son’s friends parent) think I’m a total geek for loving star wars, comic books, and sci fi. sorry everyone else I know its a Jolie-Pitt site but all the talk of Tomb Raider just reminded me of the Clone Wars coming out this Friday. I know a couple of years ago the Jolie-Pitt kids all dressed up as star wars characters for Halloween I wonder if they will go see the clone wars?

Ligaya and Carrie
As long as you don’t use derogatory words to express your opinions or use them against other posters, I believe you guys are just having a stimulated disagreement and all the more power to you. Quite apologizing and accusing and get on the debate, I don’t know about the rest but I find it very interesting. I some time get tired of all the sticky sweet things said. I love to agree to disagree. I love even more trying to turn people to my own point of view I think all humans do.

Ligaya, how can you say “Carrie, if you notice, my comment was directed to the whole community – not at you personally.” ? Your comment was absolutely directed at Carrie! You mention the name Carrie in several of your sentences/opinions.
Yes, you (like everyone else) has a right to your opinion, but don’t post something about “h8ters” (in the post about Z and Brad) and then make such snotty comments towards another fan. Does seem a bit hypocritical…

actually Rita - Ligaya’s comment was not directed at Carrie, you better go back and re read it. it was directed to all the poster here, and basically it just asks the question do you agree with Carrie or not (as to weather AJ should stay home with the kids) and uses Carrie as an example. A question is a good way to start a debate. I don’t believe either one of them meant to hurt the others feeling and I hope they didn’t, if they did you wouldn’t last 10min in a discussion with AJ, who I have read has some very heated discussions in her house.
I also believe that everyone here is far from being a h8ter, and be careful about throwing around the word ‘hypocritical’, because I am sure everyone is a hypocrite at one time or another.

OT: Kim, those were my grandnephews (8, 6, 4) and my godsons (graduated from high school this year, in high school, and in middle school). I hope my niece and her husband take the boys to see Clone Wars – I don’t know if the 4 y.o. is old enough to sit still for the movie. Did you see the first animated Clone Wars series by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls) on Cartoon Network? I really liked that.
Didn’t Brad also dress up as a Star Wars character for Halloween? Two of my favorite SW things is my Darth Vader baseball jersey #77 (get it?) – people always say something when I wear it - and my Star Wars Darth Vader watch – it “breathes” like him. What’s your favorite?

I can’t remember where the article was that AJ talked about Halloween but I believe he did.
My favorite would have to be the full size barbie dolls of Prince Leia and Luke Skywalker I got them Christmas of 1977, and I still have them. Any of the new stuff that is out I usually buy for my son. I really like his collection of starwars lego key chains, and of course he looks so cute in his original starwars poster t-shirt. That watch sounds really cool I have never seen one.

My son has the cartoon network clone wars on DVD there was a time when it was on our TV all the time. Now that he can read he is really into the clone wars comic books (novels) based on the cartoon network series.

This actually has nothing to do with the movies. They always pick someone to promote the video games. It even says in the article you linked to, “the face of the video game franchise.”
Who knows, maybe Angelina will do another movie, if there is one.

Totally agree with the article in the guardian:P
About the question weather angie should stay at home, I think I wrotre smth about that too, in another post. I won’t repeat myself. I will only say that it is totally absurd to think that way. She finished her last movie in late 2007 and the new one will begin sometimes in 2009. Do any of you, working parents here, ever had such a long vacation to stay at home with your kids? She has one of the most permissive job in the world. She can take her kids to set whenever she wants. Can you do that at your working place? She takes the familly with her in every city she has to shoot a movie. Can you do that if your company sends you in another town for a while? And after all, who are we to judge or to have an opinion about how she should be as a parent? Really? I think it is a bit childish, if you ask me.
About Lara Croft, in my opinion, there surely is no other than Angelina. And there is no negotiation to that!

There has been a lot of talking arround here wether angelina and brad shoul get married because it is the right thing to do. Well, I found an older article that says it all. Especially the first paragraph. Right to the point.

There is only one Tomb Raider and her name is Lara Croft. Though many people have been chosen to portray her in the game and the movies, Lara still is herself. Her own personality, hobbies, fears, etc. Angie did a good job mimicking her as others did a good job doing the voices in the game, but let’s give credit where credit is due. Lara is Laura- an amazing archeologist and adventurer and Angie is an actress. Though there are often similarities where the actors have much in common with their fictional counterparts, that’s what makes it more real to the audience and most of the time, that is what producers want so they wont have to worry about that actor “being “ the character. I am not saying anything bad about Angie at all, she is a wonderful actress, but I’ve always admired Lara Croft and have never thought of the two names as synonymous. I was a little irritated that people have started to associate one with the other, but I understand that not a lot of people play video games and movies will always get more attention. Lara Croft always has been and always will be Lara Croft and there is only room for one. Play all the games and find out what she is all about-she is amazing! Like books, they are better than the movies! All that being said, I hope this new person portrays Lara as well as her predecessors.

THANK YOU FOR THAT LINK, LARA - SO REFRESHING.
OT: Kim, keep those Star Wars dolls and other memorabilia - they may be worth something. :-) Sometimes comic books are the only way to get kids to start reading. Librarians are all for it.

ligaya, my pleasure :)
tmk_revz> I like very much the problem that you raised here. It could be a very interesting topic, so I felt the need to reply. Your opinion is very just, up to a point. We are not saying that Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft We are talking here about association. And let’s face it, it is impossible not to associate the character in the game with the person that played it in the movie. It happenes without thinking of it. It’s like when you say “when I smell this perfume I think about my mother. She always uses it” or “the smell of this cake reminds me of my grandmother. She baked it a lot”. For me, personally, it is impossible not to think of angelina when I see the game. And you say that “Lara is Laura- an amazing archeologist and adventurer and Angie is an actress”. First of all I have to say the most important thing: Angie is not JUST an actress. And I will stop here regarding this aspect of your comment, because this a much too complex discussion and very much about it has been said in a previous thread “why do brad and angelina fascinate us so much”. Secondly, archeology implies travelling…lots of it. I think we all know by now that Angie (Brad and the familly) is a top traveller. I don’t know if I will travell my whole life as much as she did so far. And she doesn’t always travels for movies. She does it for smth she believes in (the same does Lara Croft. Travels for the things that matter to her). Lara Croft is an adventurer! True. And that’ s another point in Angie’s favour. Who is a grater adventurer than Angelina? Maybe just a handfull of people. And I don’t think that I have to explain why because it would take too long. So, we have travelling, love for adventure, taking stand for what you believe in, no matter the cost, without any fear at all. Who should we say this is? Lara Croft or Angelina Jolie? So that’s what I’m (and everyone else here) talking about. Not about the fact that Angie is Lara! This would be impossible, wouldn’t it ?:)) It is just a manner of speaking. It’s about the things the both of them have in coomon (one being just a fictional character, the other a real person) and that’s why we associate Lara with Angelina. And now it occurs to me how amazing this is. The character Lara Croft was not created having angelina jolie in mid. Yet, it’s almost like a mirror reflection. Looks and prsonality very, very much alike. This is what it is all about: ASSOCIATING. As simple as that.
ps: most of the books are, indeed, better than the movies that are made after them. I’ve noticed that also.
