No more raiding tombs for Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie not returning as Lara Croft in next Tomb Raider

Back when we were discussing movies we’d love to see with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, many people expressed an interest in seeing Angelina return as Lara Croft in another Tomb Raider installment. Looks like it’s not going to happen.

Apparently the role of Lara Croft will be resumed by someone new, 23-year-old Alison Carroll. You can check it out over here.

(I was amused by the story about how she got locked in her apartment the day of her big meeting with producers and had to throw her bags over the first-floor balcony, leaped over, and jumped the fence to get there.)

It will be interesting to see how she holds up. To me, Angelina Jolie will always be Lara Croft so I’m not sure how well I can accept a new version. It would be, to me, as if they replaced Harrison Ford as Han Solo in Return of the Jedi.

On the other hand, if Angelina does indeed take on the new CIA role sometime next year, she’ll still have plenty of time for high action stunt work!

Edited to add: I read this late last night, after a very long and tiring day. As a result I misunderstood and didn’t realize that this new girl is not starring in an upcoming movie, she is simply the new promotional girl for the game. Sorry for the confusion.

However, now I’d like to open it up for discussion and ask you all who else in Hollywood could play Lara Croft if Angelina Jolie did not take the role for a hypothetical new Tomb Raider film? If it can’t be her, who’s your next choice? The only person I can think of off the top of my head is maybe Jennifer Garner because of her great work on Alias. The biggest problem there, though is that she doesn’t quite look the part. She’s very pretty but she’s more of the “girl next door” look whereas Angelina really did look like Lara Croft is supposed to.

Ideas?

    LOL at NYPost’s creative writing.

Melodie I know, I remember when she said that too! People are so desperate for Angie news they put her name into everything to get hits. But has got to be one of the sillier stories out there.

Ok I can’t find the thread were this conversation took place. Who was the Star Wars Fan on this site? I thought it was Mary Ann but now I am not sure who it was, but I know she was a grandmother.

  3. kim says:

I asked my husband last night who he thought would make a good Lara Croft. His answer surprised me, Keira Knightley. Now I know she doesn’t has it up front to play Lara Croft, but after some thought I thought way not. Jessica Alba would be good too.

there is now a photo on People online of Brad holding Z and his mom is there too…..People said they went to a museum (not lunch). Z is so so cute…..angela, good eye. Looks like Z and AJ are wearing similar dresses!

‘Kung Fu Panda’ sequel being discussed - $560 million in global ticket sales

Katzenberg says decision will come in next two months

    Reuters - Aug 13, 2008, 07:12 PM ET

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Wednesday that the studio was in talks to make a sequel to boxoffice hit “Kung Fu Panda” and could make an announcement within two months.

“We’ve started conversations about it, and I think in the next 30 or 60 days, we’ll be able to talk completely about that,” Katzenberg told Reuters, when asked about a follow-up to a film that has raked in $560 million in global ticket sales.

The article is about casting actresses in general for male parts:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2008/aug/14/angelinajolie.tomcruise?gusrc=rss&feed=film

Who needs a male lead when you can have Angelina Jolie?:

Jolie should simply go about remaking every single Tom Cruise film with herself in the role. She could be the Hitler assassin Stauffenberg, and she would wear the eye-patch loads better than Tom. She could be the sports agent in Jerry Maguire and her delivery of the line: “The f***ing zoo is closed!” would be hair-raising. She could be Madame Phelps in Mission Impossible, lowering herself from the ceiling on pulleys and tapping away on laptops, flexing abs and biceps far more buff than Tom’s. Most importantly, she would be a great navy pilot in Top Gun, and her lethal presence as she “rides someone’s tail” would give us a break from all that tiring 80s suppressed homoeroticism.

Apart from everything else, she would be a lot taller. [ouch]

Kim, no grandkids in sight. (sigh) Maybe when they’re more established in their careers. I’m a huge Star Wars fan. Are you going to see the animated Clone Wars this weekend? I just watched Family Guy’s Blue Harvest SW spoof - hilarious! Have to add that and the Robot Chicken: Star Wars dvd to my collection - and they’re making a sequel. I also want to get a copy of George Lucas in Love.

I only have a 900 sq. ft. house, so if I’m going to get Angelina memorabilia, I’ll have to give up other things - like exchanging my Anakin (mean look in his eyes, cloak billowing, brandishing his lightsaber) standee for one of Angelina in Lara Croft’s skintight silver scuba suit.

UNDER MOD: Kim, no grandkids in sight. (sigh) Maybe when they’re more established in their careers. I’m a huge Star Wars fan. . .

Thanks for the links, Rita and Angela. Great eye, Angela! I hope someday there’s a pic of Zahara and Angelina wearing their matching dresses together. It was so cute when Angelina had her white Valentino bag and Zahara had a matching mini-replica in Central Park.

Carrie, if you notice, my comment was directed to the whole community – not at you personally. I’m sorry you think I’m attacking you, I’m strongly disagreeing with your opinion – that’s not the same as attacking you personally. And I think I generally acknowledge in my posts that you have a right to your opinion, as I have a right to mine.

IMO, attacking you would have been directing my ire at you personally (e.g., “Carrie, your opinion is _____, what a ____ to say”). Attacking you would have been the kind of ultra-nasty flaming exchange between h8ters and some fans on the other boards.

I think it’s obvious that you and I disagree on our interpretation of most things, except for being fans of the Jolie Pitts. Kumbayah isn’t in our future. That’s OK. But please don’t ask me to water down my opinions – to me, that’s like silencing or censoring myself. I’m sorry my opinions - or the way I express them - make you uncomfortable; I feel the same way about your opinions. I admire other posters in our community who have wonderful ways of expressing disagreement in a kinder, gentler way than I do. I’m just plain-spoken. Sorry. :-) So keep expressing your opinions, and I’ll do the same. (And I’m sorry, but my opinions include opinions about other people’s opinions.)

    Ligaya

OK so who were all those kids that you were bring over to the force? For some reason I thought they were your grandchildren sorry for the mistake. My son and his friends are so excited for tomorrow, I guess I was just looking for someone to share that with, since most of my friend (mostly my son’s friends parent) think I’m a total geek for loving star wars, comic books, and sci fi. sorry everyone else I know its a Jolie-Pitt site but all the talk of Tomb Raider just reminded me of the Clone Wars coming out this Friday. I know a couple of years ago the Jolie-Pitt kids all dressed up as star wars characters for Halloween I wonder if they will go see the clone wars?

  12. kim says:

    Ligaya and Carrie

As long as you don’t use derogatory words to express your opinions or use them against other posters, I believe you guys are just having a stimulated disagreement and all the more power to you. Quite apologizing and accusing and get on the debate, I don’t know about the rest but I find it very interesting. I some time get tired of all the sticky sweet things said. I love to agree to disagree. I love even more trying to turn people to my own point of view I think all humans do.

  13. Rita says:

Ligaya, how can you say “Carrie, if you notice, my comment was directed to the whole community – not at you personally.” ? Your comment was absolutely directed at Carrie! You mention the name Carrie in several of your sentences/opinions.

Yes, you (like everyone else) has a right to your opinion, but don’t post something about “h8ters” (in the post about Z and Brad) and then make such snotty comments towards another fan. Does seem a bit hypocritical…

  14. kim says:

actually Rita - Ligaya’s comment was not directed at Carrie, you better go back and re read it. it was directed to all the poster here, and basically it just asks the question do you agree with Carrie or not (as to weather AJ should stay home with the kids) and uses Carrie as an example. A question is a good way to start a debate. I don’t believe either one of them meant to hurt the others feeling and I hope they didn’t, if they did you wouldn’t last 10min in a discussion with AJ, who I have read has some very heated discussions in her house.
I also believe that everyone here is far from being a h8ter, and be careful about throwing around the word ‘hypocritical’, because I am sure everyone is a hypocrite at one time or another.

  15. Ligaya says:

OT: Kim, those were my grandnephews (8, 6, 4) and my godsons (graduated from high school this year, in high school, and in middle school). I hope my niece and her husband take the boys to see Clone Wars – I don’t know if the 4 y.o. is old enough to sit still for the movie. Did you see the first animated Clone Wars series by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls) on Cartoon Network? I really liked that.

Didn’t Brad also dress up as a Star Wars character for Halloween? Two of my favorite SW things is my Darth Vader baseball jersey #77 (get it?) – people always say something when I wear it - and my Star Wars Darth Vader watch – it “breathes” like him. What’s your favorite?

  16. kim says:

I can’t remember where the article was that AJ talked about Halloween but I believe he did.
My favorite would have to be the full size barbie dolls of Prince Leia and Luke Skywalker I got them Christmas of 1977, and I still have them. Any of the new stuff that is out I usually buy for my son. I really like his collection of starwars lego key chains, and of course he looks so cute in his original starwars poster t-shirt. That watch sounds really cool I have never seen one.

  17. kim says:

My son has the cartoon network clone wars on DVD there was a time when it was on our TV all the time. Now that he can read he is really into the clone wars comic books (novels) based on the cartoon network series.

  18. Ari says:

This actually has nothing to do with the movies. They always pick someone to promote the video games. It even says in the article you linked to, “the face of the video game franchise.”

Who knows, maybe Angelina will do another movie, if there is one.

  19. Lara says:

Totally agree with the article in the guardian:P
About the question weather angie should stay at home, I think I wrotre smth about that too, in another post. I won’t repeat myself. I will only say that it is totally absurd to think that way. She finished her last movie in late 2007 and the new one will begin sometimes in 2009. Do any of you, working parents here, ever had such a long vacation to stay at home with your kids? She has one of the most permissive job in the world. She can take her kids to set whenever she wants. Can you do that at your working place? She takes the familly with her in every city she has to shoot a movie. Can you do that if your company sends you in another town for a while? And after all, who are we to judge or to have an opinion about how she should be as a parent? Really? I think it is a bit childish, if you ask me.

About Lara Croft, in my opinion, there surely is no other than Angelina. And there is no negotiation to that!

  20. tmk_revz says:

There is only one Tomb Raider and her name is Lara Croft. Though many people have been chosen to portray her in the game and the movies, Lara still is herself. Her own personality, hobbies, fears, etc. Angie did a good job mimicking her as others did a good job doing the voices in the game, but let’s give credit where credit is due. Lara is Laura- an amazing archeologist and adventurer and Angie is an actress. Though there are often similarities where the actors have much in common with their fictional counterparts, that’s what makes it more real to the audience and most of the time, that is what producers want so they wont have to worry about that actor “being “ the character. I am not saying anything bad about Angie at all, she is a wonderful actress, but I’ve always admired Lara Croft and have never thought of the two names as synonymous. I was a little irritated that people have started to associate one with the other, but I understand that not a lot of people play video games and movies will always get more attention. Lara Croft always has been and always will be Lara Croft and there is only room for one. Play all the games and find out what she is all about-she is amazing! Like books, they are better than the movies! All that being said, I hope this new person portrays Lara as well as her predecessors.

  21. ligaya says:

THANK YOU FOR THAT LINK, LARA - SO REFRESHING.

OT: Kim, keep those Star Wars dolls and other memorabilia - they may be worth something. :-) Sometimes comic books are the only way to get kids to start reading. Librarians are all for it.

  22. Lara says:

    ligaya, my pleasure :)
tmk_revz> I like very much the problem that you raised here. It could be a very interesting topic, so I felt the need to reply. Your opinion is very just, up to a point. We are not saying that Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft We are talking here about association. And let’s face it, it is impossible not to associate the character in the game with the person that played it in the movie. It happenes without thinking of it. It’s like when you say “when I smell this perfume I think about my mother. She always uses it” or “the smell of this cake reminds me of my grandmother. She baked it a lot”. For me, personally, it is impossible not to think of angelina when I see the game. And you say that “Lara is Laura- an amazing archeologist and adventurer and Angie is an actress”. First of all I have to say the most important thing: Angie is not JUST an actress. And I will stop here regarding this aspect of your comment, because this a much too complex discussion and very much about it has been said in a previous thread “why do brad and angelina fascinate us so much”. Secondly, archeology implies travelling…lots of it. I think we all know by now that Angie (Brad and the familly) is a top traveller. I don’t know if I will travell my whole life as much as she did so far. And she doesn’t always travels for movies. She does it for smth she believes in (the same does Lara Croft. Travels for the things that matter to her). Lara Croft is an adventurer! True. And that’ s another point in Angie’s favour. Who is a grater adventurer than Angelina? Maybe just a handfull of people. And I don’t think that I have to explain why because it would take too long. So, we have travelling, love for adventure, taking stand for what you believe in, no matter the cost, without any fear at all. Who should we say this is? Lara Croft or Angelina Jolie? So that’s what I’m (and everyone else here) talking about. Not about the fact that Angie is Lara! This would be impossible, wouldn’t it ?:)) It is just a manner of speaking. It’s about the things the both of them have in coomon (one being just a fictional character, the other a real person) and that’s why we associate Lara with Angelina. And now it occurs to me how amazing this is. The character Lara Croft was not created having angelina jolie in mid. Yet, it’s almost like a mirror reflection. Looks and prsonality very, very much alike. This is what it is all about: ASSOCIATING. As simple as that.

ps: most of the books are, indeed, better than the movies that are made after them. I’ve noticed that also.
