Pitt Overlooked By The Screen Actors Guild
While the Golden Globes and the International Press Association certainly thought Pitt was worthy of a nomination for his supporting role in Babel, the Screen Actors Guild did not agree.
Here are the nominees from SAG for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:
Alan Arkin / LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE – Grandpa Fox Searchlight Pictures
Leonardo DiCaprio / THE DEPARTED – Billy Warner Bros. Pictures
Jackie Earle Haley / LITTLE CHILDREN – Ronnie J. McGorvey New Line Cinema
Djimon Hounsou / BLOOD DIAMOND – Solomon Warner Bros. Pictures
Eddie Murphy / DREAMGIRLS – James “Thunder” Early Paramount Pictures
The cast of Babel was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:
BABEL - Paramount Vantage
Adriana Barraza - Amelia
Cate Blanchett - Susan
Gael García Bernal - Santiago
Rinko Kikuchi - Chieko
Brad Pitt - Richard
Kôji Yakusho - Yasujiro
Why the snub?

Did they give an explanation why he was not considered. If he is not in “best supporting Actor”, what is his categorized for?

I so wanted Brad to be nominated but also see how his part is quite small in Babel, although excellent.

No, no explanation, just the list.
His part is considered supporting. This is the correct category for him, but they are saying these fellows are more deserving of the award for their supporting performances. I don’t agree, but I’m biased. ;)
