Possible screenplay re-write for Angelina Jolie

August 11, 2008 by Sherry

According to Variety, the movie Edwin A. Salt may be re-written specifically for Angelina Jolie. The movie was originally going to be a Tom Cruise film, but things have changed. Once Angelina had made note that she liked the project, thoughts started whirling as to how it could be changed to fit a female lead instead.

The role would be that of a CIA officer accused of being a Russian spy who then needs to prove her innocence while still avoiding being captured. Considering her ability to play an assassin - twice - as well as a tomb raider, I have no doubt that Angie could pull off portraying someone in the CIA on the run.

The title of the movie will be changed if the re-write does happen, assuming she takes the role. There’s no word yet as to when shooting would start, but obviously it won’t be too soon since Angelina gave birth so recently and Brad is going to start filming in the Fall for his upcoming film with Quentin Tarantino.

There was also a brief mention of the ongoing hope that someday she will get to star in the film adaptation of Atlas Shrugged.

The full story is here.

As a woman, I have to say that I love the thought of a male role being recast for an actress. What do you think of this new development?

Also, I have a reader in Iran who has contacted me to find out if anyone is willing to send out an extra copy of People and Hello. If you’d like to volunteer to help her out and figure out the costs/repayment, please contact me by email (up there in the side bar) and I’ll put you both in touch!

wow! screenplay would be re-written just for her? i have to say angie is one of the most wanted and powerful actress today. now that i knew that it was meant to be for a guy role i’d probably find it odd for her to portray but i agree, i know angie can pull this kind of role. i also would ove her to be in Atlas Shrugged, i’ve read that book last year and it’s really nice.

  3. Passerby says:

It just goes to show you that Angie is better than Tom to the point that scripts are written for her and she’s hired based on talent and that auditions aren’t needed, (As mention on a pervious thread).

Angie is kick-butt in action movie so this is sure to be a box office sensation if it does happen.

  4. timi says:

yay!! i hope this project will push through for angie. there’s no doubt she could pull this off. i’m so excited!!:)

  5. Ligaya says:

Iran! I just watched Persepolis and loved it. (Sherry, since you’re studying the Middle East - have you had a chance to see Persepolis? I highly recommend it.) I have one last copy of People and one last copy of Hello. Sherry, I’ll email you about the details.

Oh, I was able to get a copy of Eve before the People and Hello magazines came out. I went to Japantown for Aera, but they didn’t have the Pittwatch :-) issue. I’ll have to go back and look again.

  6. Ligaya says:

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!!! There’s only ONE Angelina – she’s exceptional. I like Philip Noyce – he directed Angelina and Denzel in Bone Collector, one of my favorites. He also directed Rabbit-Proof Fence, another of my favorites, about the time in Australia’s history (for which the government recently apologized, if I remember correctly) when Aborigine children were forcibly taken from their parents (like what happened to Native American children here in the U.S.). Noyce also directed Nicole Kidman in her breakout role in Dead Calm. If I remember correctly, Nicole was originally cast as Mrs. Smith. I don’t remember which of these events led to her bowing out: the Eyes Wide Shut shoot was interminably long (over a year, I think), or she had an injury from Moulin Rouge.

Six degrees of separation: Tom Cruise was not fired, as rumors have it. He was attached to the movie for a long time before deciding that the spy on the run was too much like his Misson Impossible character. He’s gotten good buzz for his role in Tropic Thunder, and is now looking for another comedy. Also, it’s not true that Will Smith was offered the role and when he passed on it, the role was offered to Angelina.

The project has a long history, with directors coming and going, though Cruise has long been tethered to it. The deal for the switch began to fall into place about two weeks ago, though Columbia topper Amy Pascal has been after Jolie for a project for more than two years.

    Great news for Angie.

Jeffrey Wells talked to Philip Noyce:

It took three days to work out the particulars, which is quite fast by Hollywood standards. Deals can take months to cobble together, obviously depending on the particulars.

***The shoot will hopefully begin in February ‘09.***

  10. I would love to see Angie in a spy role.

I saw Wanted last weekend (finally it arrived here!) and my heart almost stopped in the first car chasing scene. I intentionally avoided watching the trailers when they came out so it was all nerve-racking to me. Angie looked so cool in the movie and James McVoy was so good, too. My husband said he preferred Mr and Mrs Smith though.

  11. ema says:

It was rumored that Brad will also star in Atlas Shrugged, isn’t it?I hope this will turn out to be true because I miss them on-screen together:D Oh, and I can’t wait to see them on the red carpet again;))

  12. mélodie says:

i can’t wait to see angie in another film, she’s so great : and new film = more red carpet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. {appetizing} says:

    Angelina Jolie is unstopable!

  14. {appetizing} says:

    Angelina Jolie is unstoppable !

  15. Mary Ann says:

Wow, I could see her as a CIA operative.

  16. irma says:

Another good movie & & she is the best in every role she play. Looking forward to that movie.
    God bless the Jolie-Pitt’s.

  17. Rach says:

She is an amazing and powerful woman. I love her :D

The decision to pick a female replacement perhaps says something positive about Hollywood attitudes toward gender. Ever since Warner Bros president of production Jeff Robinov’s infamous decree last year that “we are no longer doing movies with women in the lead”, it’s been clear that some studios’ attitudes towards gender equality leave something to be desired. Robinov was reacting to the poor box-office performance of Jodie Foster’s The Brave One and Nicole Kidman’s The Invasion. Clearly, Columbia have no such qualms about Ms Jolie, whose action credentials were recently given a fillip by the cool $132m grossed by Wanted.

GIRRRRRRRL POWER! There was also talk that Angelina might play Virginia Plame (I think that’s the name) in a biopic in which CIA operative Plame was outed by the Bush administration in retaliation for her diplomat husband not cooperating in the runup to the Iraq War (he wrote a report that there was no evidence Iraq had weapons of mass destruction - later proven true, but by then we were in a war.)

  19. Nicole says:

why doesn’t she take some time off and be a momma? She should have kept the baby money and stayed home with her kids, would have more respect for her, just sayin..

  20. neer says:

When I first heard this news, I was very excited of course. We can really say Angie is the most sought-after female hollywood celebrity. I mean, just like Wanted, the producers are willing to adjust or modify the script just to entice her. Imagine, she has no publicist, no agent. She only has manager Geyer, yet production companies really want to get her services as an actress. This is what we call GIRL POWER in the world of male-dominated business. You go girl!

  21. Carrie says:

I think this would be very cool, but we shouldn’t get too excited because she said she was taking a sabbatical from movie making unless it was a once in a life time chance like Atlas Shrugged. So I think this is just a rumor.

  22. jackie says:

Carrie I don’t think its a rumour, remember they said the head of Sony which is a woman had been wanting her now for two years. So the fact that she liked their script obviously they would do anything to entice her.

  23. kim says:

I always thought that AJ would make a good Russian with her colouring. I know she actually wouldn’t be and would be trying to prove that she is not a double spy but what ever. As for AJ staying home and being a momma, well I am on the fence with this comment. One I know they could afford it, 2 why doesn’t Brad stay home and be a Dada, 3 why do woman always have to give up their career and stay home with the kids, 4 I believe they are trying to do as many project as they can while they can, so they can just quit in say 5 years or so. Anyways her kids probable see more of her and Brad then my kid does of me and my husband (working 8-5 - 5 days a week all year long).
Well I wonder if this will be miss read?

  24. gena G. says:

NO ONE CAN BIT ANGELINA IN ACTION MOVIES. SHE IS THE ONE AND THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN DO IT ALL. THERE ARE SOME THAT I LIKE TO BE WITH HER IN A MOVIE AS SISTER’S LIKE MADELINE STOWE, GILLIAN ANDERSON, ANNABEL GISH AND CHARLIZE THERON, A MOVIE THAT IS BUTT KICKING. ANGELINA IS THE MIGHTY QUEEN. OPPS LUCY LAWLESS CAN BE ONE OF HER SISTERS TOO, REMEMBER HER AS XENA THE WARRIOR PRINCESS, SHE CAN ALSO KICK BUTT. SHERRY THANK YOU VERY MUCH. YOU ALWAYS MAKES MY DAY A VERY GOOD DAY.

  25. susie says:

If anything, this project is probably not happening right away (script has to be rewritten) and since she and Brad have an agreement never to work at the same time, I am going to assume this will probably not happen til sometime next year when the babies will be older. Plus movie making is not your typical 8-5 job so it’s probably the best of both worlds for Angie and the kids. Didn’t she say once that she feels very lucky to work typically 5 months out of the year?

  26. maggietozier says:

Why shouldn’t Angelina do her job? It is her job after all. I (and the whole world nearly) are aware that she has 6 children. Why do people always harp on her to stay home with them as if doing her job makes her a bad mother. My grandmother had 13 kids, guess what, they didn’t all get personal attention and they turned out fine. My grandma didn’t have nannies, money, or extended family to help her and her kids are great people. Angelina has as much right as any other person to fulfill her wish to be a parent as many times as she can afford and to fulfill her personal goals by continuing to work. There is nothing wrong with being a working mother even if you don’t “have to” work. Some people work because it makes them feel accomplished and settled and focused in ways that other activities can’t. Please don’t bash working moms, even if they’re millionaires. just sayin’…

  27. Darl says:

not that I buy US but has anyone noticed this weeks cover where it says Hollywoods Best Moms(Not Angelina)! I guess they do not like her to well over there aye?? I know Angelina has said she loves to play the action roles so I hope it works out! I will be there to see it opening week-end!! I have been on vacation and if were not for my daily checks on this site, I would have missed Peoples release of THE PHOTOS!! I barely got an issue!! Now that would have been tragic!!!

  28. Liz says:

Just a little funny story. It really is true that Angie requires no explanation as to her compelling beauty. I listened to a man explain the opening scene of Wanted to another man the other day, and he said, “Then the guy looks up and ANGELINA JOLIE is standing there right next to him.” I laughed when they both grinned the same juicy male grin at each other, imagining how they would feel if Angie was that close to them!

  29. Lara says:

    Kim, totally agree with you
Nicole> “The shoot will hopefully begin in February ‘09.” It’s what the news says. Did you even read it? We have 7 months to go until Feb.09. And it says “hopefully” so it might take longer. The babies will probably be almost one year old when the shooting begins. On the other hand, shooting a movie doesn’t take forever, you know? I remember Angie saying that she shoot 2 movies (The Changeling and Wanted I think) in 4 months, which mean 2 months/movie. Is that so long, taking into consideration that she can take her kids to set (which she always does) and a day of shooting can have 12 hours, but it also can have 4? I don’t think so.
All parents have jobs. Like kim said, many of them work 8 (or more) hours a day, 5 days a week. Do they see their kids more? No! Maybe less that Angie and Brad.
I don’t want to offend you, but I think that you wrothe this comment just for the fun of it.
And about the money…it would be too much to say about your “comment” so I just want you to just think at those kids that now, thanks to that money, received a much needed aid and than say thay Angelina should just kept the money…Oh, and by the way, she has too much common sense to do such thing!

  30. isacutie says:

It’s interesting, and it would be nice to see Angie again in a movie. But I’m sure she’ll weigh everything that’s going on right now in her life and decide what’s best.

  31. Mary Ann says:

Kim, I agree with you 100 percent. I believe that both Brad and Angie spend more time with their children than most families that work 8 hour shifts and maybe some have to do overtime on the weekends.

  32. Mary Ann says:

Nicole, are you a stay at home Mom? If so, that is great, but most people work because they have too. And then there are some people who work for self satisfaction. Also, have you ever stopped to think about how many poor people benefit from Angelina making a movie. If she makes 15 to 20 million per movie and 33% goes to charity, do the math. If she sells pictures of her children for 14 millon can you image how many children will be helped. She does so much good I just can not figure out why she is always put down.

  33. Liz says:

Login and entered my comments earlier. Not sure what happened…it stated under moderation. Anyway just a short note…got a copy of mag people finally. Hello JP fans. Hey folks wondering when do we see next pictures of JP kids (twins can relax) I would like to see MPZS.

  34. samara says:

the hater’s are going to have a field day on this one.. ” didnt she say she was going to take a break?”..As much as i love angie, I can see their point on this..

  35. Sherry says:

Samara - Why would see their point? The movie isn’t starting tomorrow. The script has to be re-written with a female in mind and the pre-production hasn’t started. The article says that they HOPE it will be ready to start in February 2009 but it could be even longer.

As women we’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t. Why can’t we just support each other in the work we do whether it’s as a CEO, a stay at home mom, or an actress?

  36. the other brangie fan says:

Angie has not worked since early Novembe 2007. This new film will not start before February 2009. That is a break in work most people would love to have.

  37. angela says:

brad and angie are taking turns when it comes to working. i believe what she meant by taking a break is the break she’s having right now since brad will start working on his IB movie. and besides, filming starts next year, the twins will be months older by that time.

  38. sunny says:

“The project has a long history, with directors coming and going, though Cruise has long been tethered to it. The deal for the switch(from a male to a female ) began to fall into place about two weeks ago, though Columbia Pictures chairwoman Amy Pascal has been after Jolie for a project for more than 2 years ”
What is the project which Pascal wants Angie in it ? Pascal once said that Angie is a female James Dean for our time when her studio backed Girl, Interrupted. She also said she would make any movie with Angie in it. It was 8 years ago. We can see how Pascal has been wanting the powerful actress, Angie.

  39. Mary Ann says:

Liz, I agree with you I would love to see Madd, Pax, Zee and Shi also. But only if they are out and about with their parents. Liz, also I wanted to tell you there is a reason for moderation. I am set up to see all comments in my e-mail, and a few comments have come thru that are not nice. And Sherry gets rid of these comments. If she didn’t do this then this would become a sight like many others that just have nasty and sick people commenting. And Sherry is real quick to go thru the moderations unless she has a family thing going on which we respect and understand.

  40. Ligaya says:

When Angelina said she was going to take off a year to concentrate on her kids, I think she meant not filming movies. I don’t think she counted premieres and promotion as “work.” Last year I posted in several places that we shouldn’t expect Angelina to disappear from the face of the earth this year, because she had duties for Changeling and Kung Fu Panda in Cannes and the premieres (not to mention the RC with Brad for his movies). Also, Angelina didn’t say she’d retire from her UN responsibilities. Knowing the anti-Angelina obsession out there, I’m sure she’ll be slammed hard if we see her before 365 continuous days of not working have passed – starting from when she made her statement.

  41. Ligaya says:

“Angie has not worked since early November 2007.”

Thanks for that info, The Other Brangie Fan. So, here’s a little project I’m asking Pittwatchers to pitch in with, if you want to. I don’t remember all the dates and numbers, but I’d like to chart the times Angelina was working, and when she was home with the kids while Brad worked. (I’m guesstimating one year before the release as the year of filming.) Please add to this and correct my mistakes.

Since Wanted, Brad has made the following, with Angelina caring for the kids:
Tree of Life (2009, filmed 2008); The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008, filmed 2007), Burn After Reading (2008, filmed 2007)

Wanted (2008, filmed 2007) – same routine with MPZS on set when not in school/pre-school.

Changeling (2008, filmed 2007) – Brad brought the kids on set.

Kung Fu Panda (2008, filmed 2007) (voice) – Angelina said she worked a total of 4 days on KFP; again, Maddox was with her.

Beowulf (2007, filmed 2006) – Angelina said she worked for 2 weeks, often with Maddox with her (their one-on-one time)

BRAD: Ocean’s Thirteen (2007, filmed 2006) – Angelina takes care of kids

A Mighty Heart (2007, filmed 2006) - Zahara and Maddox on set.

The Good Shepherd (2006, filmed 2005) - Zahara on set, Angelina pregnant with Shiloh.

BRAD: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007, filmed 2006) – Angelina takes care of kids

BRAD: Babel (2006, filmed 2005) – Angelina takes care of the kids

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005, filmed 2004) – Maddox on set
