Speculation continues about Brad Pitt and “The Lost City of Z”

October 6, 2009 by Sherry

There’s been a lot of discussion about Brad Pitt’s bushy beard lately. Some people think it looks great, some people aren’t keen on it but still think he looks just fine, and a lot of people flat-out hate it. I fall into the middle category; I’m not crazy about his beard but I don’t think it changes the fact that he’s a seriously good-looking man.

Some of the speculation, though, has been that maybe he’s growing his beard out in order to play the role of explorer Percy Fawcett in the movie we’ve been waiting on for quite some time now, The Lost City of Z. It’s starting to pop up more and more online as well as people wait and wonder.

This article seems to think it’s pretty likely and the photo of Fawcett (the same one that a PittWatch reader posted in the comments awhile ago) is compelling reasoning. It certainly looks like it’s what Brad is going for with his growing beard.

There’s been pretty much no news whatsoever on the fate of Moneyball lately and both Brad and Angelina have clear schedules for the next little while. This would be a good time to start shooting The Lost City of Z. I’ve been eager to hear more information about it, so this would make me very happy if there is indeed truth to the possibility of filming coming up soon.

Meanwhile, another article made me laugh by describing Brad’s beard like this: “Now Brad Pitt will get to walk around with an odd goatee and prove just how desirable he is by pulling it off.” Isn’t that true?! I mean seriously – bushy yes, but still hot:

Imagine how much fun it would be for the kids to head down to the Amazon while Brad film The Lost City of Z?

What do you think? In your opinion is Brad just growing a bushy beard simply because he can and feels like it, or do you think it might be so he can play Percy Fawcett?

During the photo call interviews in Spain for Inglourious Basterds, Brad indicated he had no film committments in the near future. He said that he was still hoping “to get Moneyball off the ground”. He mentioned that there were a couple other movies including Lost City of Z that were “still in development”. I think I found a video link for this interview (Tarantino was also interviewed at this press event at the same table)on the SimplyBrad.com site. I took it to mean that he would not be working of quite awhile. Therefore, facial hair would not be needed for a role. My opinion is that Brad has the facial hair because he is not working much and he can. He has said before that he is “lazy” about his hair in general, and that is why he has taken to wearing hats. I agree that the beard is not that appealing, but he is still good looking. Here’s hoping we all get a life with good looks, although there probably is some down side I wouldn’t know of.

There is no script yet for “Z” according to several show business dailies, so I seriously doubt Brad would be growing a beard now for that movie. It is probably several months away from filming. “Moneyball” would possibly be filmed first anyway and no beard is needed for that one.

I think the man is not working and is in vacation mode and just wants to not have to shave. Evidently, his woman likes it and he likes it so, why change anything? I’m sure they care not a whit what others think. Personally, I love a man with a beard!!! Brad looks wonderful!!!

I hope the family are enjoying this unexpected down time together. If things had worked out with “Moneyball” they would be in L.A. rather than having a ball in the south of France. I say, let the man have his lazy time and leave the beard alone!!!

I also believe he is growing his facial hair just because he is feeling relaxed and happy and does not have to worry about impressing anyone. Gee if Angie and the kids don’t mind why should we. He is good looking any way. Off topic: I had a few additional thoughts on all the comments about Suri and Shiloh. I think it is real mean to compare these two cute little girls. They live very different lifestyles. Tom and Kati are different kind of people then Brad and Angie. Tom and Kati love their daughter very much but they have a very different outlook on their daily doings and Suri’s clothing.
Shiloh lives with five brothers and sisters, they travel all over the world doing good works for the poor and needy. Clothes is not a big thing in their lives. If they have a big event they are dressed up, otherwise on a day to day basis they wear clothes that they can play and rough house in. Shiloh and her brothers and sisters have been known to go to day care where they spend time with other children. I personally feel more comfortable with Shiloh’s lifestyle.

  4. Phoebe says:

he has such a beard a few years ago already, it was even worse, plus he had longer hair…:)
i guess its a phase, we girls love to change our appearances too right? just that we (luckily) can´t grow a beard…

  5. Phoebe says:

    uppssss……he haD such a beard years ago…..

  6. cee says:

Angie loves him any way , hair , no hair. I can’t say that I find him bad looking either with the hair just diffrent.

  7. kakes says:

the man could grow dreadlocks and have moses’ beard, he would still be hot!!! lol…. but hey, moses was hot in the “10 commandments” even with the beard!!!

  8. jolene says:

I found this web site, mentioning the movie with Brad. Don’t know how true it is!

  9. BlessBrangelina says:

I agree Cee. Hair or no hair he’s still ALL Brad.

Not sure if this is for “Lost City of Z” because I read an article (MTV)where the writer said the script was still being worked on and maybe ready soon.

If it’s ready Nov, it needs to be read and approved by the Author, the Studios and Brad before a go ahead if all agree. So we are probably looking at starting Jan onwards if Moneyball is still not ready.

  10. Dana says:

I still think he’s growing his beard for “The Lost City of Z” but this project is in development and maybe they are not going to start filming… so it’s possible that Brad will change his look significantly for a different movie role…

Btw, I made a new video about Brad & Angelina, enjoy!

  11. Jamie says:

I tend to agree with the “he’s not shaving because he does not want to” reason more than for a film role. I think Brad is comfortable with himself and no longer feels the need to be “pretty” for anyone and if the family is OK with it, then there is no particular reason to shave. I figure it is his face and he can do with it as he pleases. I also think he is terribly sexy with or without it. I think he was gorgeous at the Clinton Global Initiative. It seems he and Angelina are just enjoying time with family and humanitarian projects, and that is fine with me.

The long beard he had before was supposed to be for the film “The Fountain” which he backed out of because of a bad script, a bit like “State of Play.” Studios should listen to Mr. Pitt as both of those films failed at the box office without him.

He definitely said that Lost City of Z and World War Z were in development with his production company, Plan B, but never said he was doing either one. He might be of course at a later date, but never said for sure that he was. The only film he mentioned as being a possibility was Moneyball and it still needed work.

  12. Lois says:

I know I’m in the minority but I find it hard to believe that the beard isn’t for a movie. Brad wore a goatee for about a year and a half which was always trimmed and looked good. This beard is messy and not being taken care of. The only other time Brad has had a beard like this was 6 or 7 years ago for a movie. He eventually pulled out of it.

  13. irma says:

That’s the way Angie likes it, so leave Brad alone. He will shave when he is ready & when Angie said “go ahead honey, shave “. Brad is handsome with or without the beard.God bless them.

  14. LouAnn says:

Thanks for that link, Jolene. I’ve read that book and it’s not totally about Colonel Fawcett; it is mostly about the author who tries to retrace the steps of Fawcett and the adventures he encountered. It was a bit boring and I didn’t finished, but I plan to . . . at some point!!! So, I really can’t imagine how the film will go. Maybe that’s why the script is taking so long to get done. That link seems to be from awhile ago since it and several other articles thought Brad would be down in Brazil this Fall to begin filming.

Well, maybe next Spring or Summer. I don’t think Brazil is very pleasant in the Summer season, but I really don’t know. They could always film in the El Yunque rain forest in Puerto Rico!!

  15. Amy (subscribed) says:

Brad would be hot with a santa claus beard and red hat, ok? He is sexy… period. But i will admit im waiting patiently to see a picture of him newly clean shaven. I love brad and i want to see that face! (i do hope its for a movie, though, cuz his movies are the best!)

  16. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

I agree with the majority that he just doesn’t want to worry about shaving for awhile. My dad often gets lazy about shaving when he’s on vacation, and I suspect it’s the same with Brad!

At any rate, I don’t think Lost City of Z will be filming anytime soon, for the reasons other posters have mentioned above. I also think Jamie has a very good point. We don’t actually know for sure if Brad’s even going to be acting in Lost City of Z. All we know at this point is that it’s being produced by Plan B. Maybe he’ll just produce it, or maybe he’ll be involved some other way behind the scenes.

In anycase, if Lost City of Z were anywhere near ready to film, I think we would have heard something by now. :)

  17. Kati (subscribed) says:

I don´t think that Brad has grown this beard for any specific role. Maybe it´s his holiday beard. LOL. At first I hated it but now I´m so used to seeing it that it doesn´t mind. Angie loves him the way he is and looks and the children sure won´t mind either. As far as his work commitments go he has said that he hasn´t any for a while so maybe he just wants to enjoy his family and spend quality time with them. For him – and Angie – the family is the most important thing in their lives right now. The children are still so young and growing so fast that either Brad or Angie don´t want to miss a second. I wouldn´t be surprised at all if neither of them wouldn´t have any filming commitments for 2010. I could be wrong but I wish they would get some peace and quiet for a change. They´re an ordinary family who wants to live a normal life and want their children to grow up as far away from Hollywood as humanly possible. In France they can have that peace and quiet. God bless the Jolie-Pitts!

  18. kim says:

Irma what makes you think AJ like the beard? And what makes you think he would shave it off when she tells him to? This is ridiculous, I for one do not like the beard, don’t like it on Brad and Don’t like it on my husband. My husband like Brad is to lazy to shave it drives me nuts. I still think its for a movie!!! Amazing how with all the things going on in the world, ie war, failing us currency, possible world currency, etc, etc and people still sit around and think the most interesting news is about celebrities. I am getting more and more discussed with myself and everyone else. hence the reason I don’t post much anymore.

  19. Mary Ann (subscribed) says:

Kim, I understand what you are saying about the serious problem we and many other parts of the world are having. I also worry, not so much for me or my husband, we have lived our lives, but our children and their families. But I think you must understand that coming on the computer for a period of time each day can help break the stress people are feeling. I think we all understand that we are not living the Jolie-Pitts lives, just checking to see what they are up too. I think Brad and Angie and other celeb’s would all agree that they need fans, and this is part of being a fan. Before computers alot of us read fan magazines on a daily basis. I don’t think you should be disgusted with yourself or us, we are doing no harm. I also read CNN every two to three hours to check in and see what is happening.

  20. Marielle says:

I don’t know, nor care what it’s for!
It looks yakkie, but it probably feels soft and warm, although we (overhere on Pittwatch) will never be sure about thát.

  21. Amy (subscribed) says:

Kim- whoa! There is nothing wrong with people having an opinion on celebrities clothes, hair color, facial hair, etc. Geez we even criticize their weight and religion! Its entertainment! Nobody here really ‘cares’. Its just a point of discussion for people bored sitting at their desks or whatever. What we really care about are our families, jobs, money, politics, war, and yes, the world. But should we ALWAYS talk about those things. No. Relax. We all care about the same things you do and you shouldnt feel ashamed that you are interested in celebrity gossip.

  22. Sherry says:

Kim, I think for many people the entertainment world is like any other distraction from the serious side of life. It’s really no different from watching TV shows, movies, reading a book, or any other hobby. I don’t think that it needs to be all or nothing though. I still watch the news every morning and try to watch it at night if I’m not too tired. I read CNN and my local news sites as well as my local paper online. I think you can still be well informed about the news and the various forms of crises around the world and still allow yourself to enjoy reading about your favorite celebrities.

Sometimes I do feel a little silly, watching victims of the tsunami try to move on or even learning about a local woman gone missing, only to turn around and write, “hey! What do you think of Brad’s beard?!” But this site is a celebrity site and posts about world news don’t fit here (though I do love that we can talk about these things in the comments, especially since so many PittWatch readers are from all around the world, not just North America). However, I do feel better knowing that I can also write about the great things Brad and Angie do, like promoting the plight of refugees and rebuilding New Orleans.

Wait for my next post, coming up shortly – it will make you feel better since it’s a genuine story about helping out less fortunate people. :)

  23. kim says:

Wrote a great post and it got deleted power went out, so I’ll try again.
What set me off today had nothing to do with the Pitt’s sorry to say. I love this site (but I was spending to much time here, interfering in work) I love the posts here mostly very interesting. What set me off today was the head line news on CNN and CTV and front page news in the news paper. Do you know what it was? It was nothing important enough to make this placement. It was David Letterman’s personal life. WHAT!!!!!!! I love checking in with my favorite Celebs here and in People, but when I turn on the news to find out about world events I don’t want to hear about Celebs, keep them in the entertainment section. Thank you for allowing my monthly rant. My friends and family don’t understand and make fun of my interest in celebs, so you guys are the only ones who might understand. Thank you

  24. Sherry says:

Kim – I completely agree with you on that one. Unless it’s awards time or it’s somehow related to world events, celebrities shouldn’t be on the front page news section.

Wow-think that this one went onto a different thread.

In order-Love, love Brad no matter how he tries to ugly himself up for whatever the reasons, maybe work (which he has been known to do) or personal. It simply doesn’t matter to me, love this man in what ever he chooses to do.

Secondly-I most definitely agree with the headline issue about David Letterman, mostly because I really can not stand him, he gives me the hebbe-gebbes (sp)? It seriously does not warrant a headline of any publication! But as far as the giving of too much of our time to following people like the Brad Pitt’s and Angeling Jolie’s of the world, that simply can’t happen LOL! I happen to think that this site is rather informative, user friendly and dedicated to not just their movies or bodies of work, but their children and not to mention their many, many charties. Therefore, here I don’t waste time stifting through garbage to find the truth! I value and enjoy the opinions of Sherry and the followers who fequent this site. I don’t alway comment but I’m forever stopping by to check up on our favourite family. Keep up the good work Sherry. Goodness! You do this on your spare time?

  26. stratoula says:

I think he is a very handsome and beautiful man with or without his beard! And if Angie is fine with it then everything is ok

  27. Kari says:

I am a huge fan of Brad and Angie and have been visiting this site for a long time.

So: not your typical angie and brad hater.

However, I don’t like the beard on Brad. I think it really takes away from his good looks. He went from being a really attractive man to looking kind of goofy and not particularly attractive.

He is aging so there is only so much he can do. But perhaps he could trim the beard ? It’s so …. in your face.

  28. joliepittfanatic (subscribed) says:

Kari- Don’t worry. Disliking Brad’s beard certainly does not make you a h8ter. :) It’s okay to be a fan and still dislike some things a person/couple/group does. :)
