Spill It: I want Babel reviews!

As I read the comments on the contest thread, someone suggested we should have a place where you can spill it on the movie. So, here it is. Who’s gone to see this movie? I want to hear ALL about. One note, if your comment has a spoiler, please note that in the title. Some of us love spoilers, others, not so much… ;)

I went to see it this past weekend. It was a great film, but EXHAUSTING. Left me emotionnally drained. But there are so many things I loved about it and I recommend it highly. The acting on all counts is suberb, the film sequencing is great, etc. etc. Go see for yourself.

The movie was great. I think more than anything it teaches how we are not listening to each other in this world. How if you dont have money you are at a great disadvantage in this world and how if you are an immigrant you can easily be bullied by the powers that be.

Pitt himself does well, but the movie is a stinker: http://draconianobservations.blogspot.com/2006/11/note-to-art-please-dont-hans-zimmer-me.html

Pitt himself does well, but the movie is a stinker. Even if is beautiful and contains all the correct intentions it is tedious, overly emotional, untight in its editing, cutting and plot lines and waaay too long.

It’s a never ending source of amusement to me how the monday morning film critic always feels the need to “own” the only opinion worth taking under advisement.

Brad did a beautiful, tender job of acting. Actually, everyone did but after the movie I felt like someone had hit me over the head with a baseball bat for hours. I can feel the beginnings of a headache now just thinking about the movie. The movie is not subtle. The world is so screwed up. It’s about the Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Things we all know but don’t do. I’m not sorry I saw it but it was catastrophe piled on top of catastrophe…so many truths about the human condition, beautifully photographed, means very well, but way too long and over the top. We all got headaches and took Advil when we got home. Brad’s soft heart and kindness really came across.

Every scene in this movie is a climax. You are always waiting for a big bomb to explode even if the actors are not speaking. You can feel their emotions by looking at their eyes. The editing is unified in such a way that it seems to be designed for a sophisticated audience. You know that the director is communicating with your inner intelligence by summarizing images of human beings divided globally but with the same emotions. I cannot explain it, but you can cry, laugh, and get excited in every scene. For example, when “Cheiko” was at the disco, sometimes you hear the music really loud, sometimes you don’t (she is deaf and mute). In a way, sometimes it is very sensual. This truly is an art film not tailored and meant to be a box office draw for the “common” crowd.

Saw the film in an advance screening a couple of weeks ago.
My opinion is that the film is uneven. While the acting is superb, and Iniratu knows how to frame a shot and use location as characters, the Japanese storyline is particularly frustrating. As a result, because of the nature of the film, I found myself at the end, a bit disappointed. My companion found the film unnecessarily brutal (and this after just seeing “The Last King of Scotland” - the picture about Idi Amin), and to a certain extent I agree with her.
The acting - from Brad Pitt to Cate Blanchett, to Gael Garcia Bernal, the Morrocans…were sublime, but even with all of that the film has some serious flaws. Most of which has to do with the structure and writing of the screenplay.
