The Role that Changed Angelina’s Life

by Christina on May 23rd, 2006

This article was submitted to me over the weekend - thought you might enjoy it:

AJsBBcover2Incredibly filmed, with sweeping views of Namibia Africa as the initial backdrop… If you have not seen it, it’s difficult to watch. Touted as a “Love-Story” it is so much more than that. Set on several continents, Beyond Borders is a rough look into the realities of war, famine and disease ravaged countries in dire need of the humanitarian relief work depicted in this hard tale of love, frustration, friendship, teamwork, fleeting but treasured moments of joy, and ultimately, sadly, in many cases, the hard acceptance of death.

Beyond Borders was released in 2003, and the same conditions depicted in this heart wrenching film exist today. Humanitarian workers are not just people who go into these countries with supplies and good intentions. These people acctually risk thier lives. Many have died giving thier all to help save the lives of so many others.

She didn’t intend to go into relief aid work to the degree she has at the time she was chosen for the starring role, but Angelina’s heart was touched in a way that changed her forever through the experience. One can clearly see the built in humanitarian that is the heart of Angelina.

I watched the special feature, “Behind the Lines: The Making of Beyond Borders”, and got a true feel for the way Angelina just sort of fell into her real life role as UN Goodwill Ambassador. Throughout the movie you see how her real life has since paralelled the script in so many ways. Self fulfilled prophecy? Quite possibly.

I came out of this with a deeper sense of who Angelina Jolie truely is. In my narrow perspective I got to see, up close and personal, a portion of true heart of Angelina in her eyes and her expressions. This was not just acting. The woman found a place inside herself she had never touched before and she opened that up to the camera and we see Angie’s HEART. The last scene of the movie left me with a feeling of one life willingly given for the sake of others…and thats how I see Jolie. She has willingly died to her old “self” for the sake of becoming a life that gives itself up for others less fortunate…. And though critics did not hail this as one of her best works as far as the movie business goes, it is clear that Angelina’s soul was all wrapped up in this story, and her professional and personal life today is proof that her heart has been in it ever since, for the transformation and shift in her life just in the past few years implies this was indeed, one of Angelina’s greatest roles.

Willingly transformed.

Angelina Jolie… Beautiful Angel.

God bless her.

hhmmm speaking about her works in the movie, i just realized that angie already worked with sooo many A list hot guys. even the new james bond (daniel craig) was actually Lara Croft’s ex boyfriend.

I love this movie. I don’t think they marketed well. It was so much more than a love story.

This is one of my favorite Angelina movies. It didn’t do well at the box office but it was a beautiful story based on a real life. She did an amazing job as did Clive Owen. The article said just what I believed about Angelina when I first saw the movie. I was already a fan because I watched it after MAMS. Now I’ve seen it several times. Just beautiful.

I have to agree that she is a rare breed on the Hollywood scene. She is not into the materialistic items that most of them are into (how often have we seen her with that same purse). We all have our issues that we deal with on a daily basis (some just different than others). I think it is a shame the way they are trying to ruin her because she is with Brad Pitt. My opinion on the whole divorce thing is this, I would rather we go our separate ways then do everything in my power to keep him with me and in the mean time he is unhappy so therefore I AM UNHAPPY. I BELIEVE that when you try and hold on to this type of relationship is when it turns in to abuse rather is be physical, mental, or verbal.

Christine how are you doing with boycotting cigarettes? :) If not as well as you would like, HANG IN THERE!!!!

P.S. > I think this movie needs to be re-released now that many humanitarian causes are at the forefront of our media…

I think if they re-released it, it would do very well the second time around.

Aside from Disney “Classics Collection”, has anyone ever heard of an original movie being re-released to the theaters for another run?

Paula - I am doing great - thanks for asking! 16 days and counting. I still feel nowhere near my normal self, and am not sleeping worth a crap, but am still hanging in there! I appreciate you all hanging around - I know I have not done the greatest job keeping up around here, but know I am doing the best I can and I will get back to normal someday - I think!!! :)

Does anyone know if Beyond Borders was before the Lara Croft movies? I read that she had to visit Cambodia and other 3rd world places for LC and that was when she saw the pervasivness of poverty and really started the transformation in her life. I also read that it was during the filming of LC that she decided to adopt Maddox. . .is that true or did I get wrong information?
Catherine, I agree that it’s a tough movie but the message is so powerful and, in my opinion, the acting is just amazing by both Ange and CO.
PS: Christina, you’re doing a great job!

JLS>I know beyond borders was after the first lara croft movie, I’m not so sure about the second one. Yeah, she decided to adopt maddox during lara croft and she got coustidy of maddox when she was filming beyond borders in namibia.

Catherine> thanks for the heads up!

#11 JLS… I believe she got the script for Beyond Borders just before or while doing LC…Oliver Stone sent it her (he was supposed to be the director) but the movie wasn’t made for a couple of yrs later. After reading the script, she enquired about the UN and got involved after that

    Paula,

Thanks, QQQQ. That straightens it out. Obviously through that entire time period, Angie was going through serious inner changes.
Radically changing the subject here: Did anyone read that the Liberal candidate for PM of England did an interview and actually said he is on Team Jolie? I’m certainly glad when anyone likes our girl but the future Prime Minister commenting on something like that? Doesn’t seem appropriate IMO.

Beyond Borders is so heartbreaking. I wept and wept and wept not only for the victims of war and famine but also for all the humanitarian workers out there.

BTW, Clive Owen is soooo hot… sorry Brad!

I like this movie her performance was breath taking. I think this movie change her life because she saw that how lucky she is. she doesnt have to go to those tragedie in her life. I do believe that movie change her because she has diffence perpective about life she want to help them that why she is so devoted about her hummanitary workand its also make her feel better about herself.

Hey JLS> galpal… If he were being appropriate, then he wouldn’t be much of a “liberal”, would he?

  • JLS
    May 24, 2006 at 4:28 pm

Well. ..there have been some liberal PMs that stick to serious subjects and don’t voice opinions on pop culture. Doesn’t seem right. He also said he wore briefs not boxers. . .reminding me of another leader who wasn’t always sticking to the most appropriate subjects!! :)

Daniel Craig has some big shoes to fill and I can’t wait to see Casino Royale. A new Bond is always interesting.
